Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the many forms of illocutionary acts and identify which ones were most frequently used in the main characters' utterances in the film A Man Called Otto. The study employed a qualitative method and involved content or document analysis. The researcher employed Austin and Searle's theories to answer the research questions. The researcher collected data on the script and film of A Man Called Otto through observation, documentation, and observation checklist procedures. The researcher employed three data analysis techniques: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results revealed that all forms of illocutionary acts were present in the utterances of all of the key characters in the film A Man Called Otto, including representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Subject A (Otto) had 260 utterances, subject B had 100 utterances, and subject C (Sonya) had 31 utterances, all of which featured illocutionary behaviors. Representative is the most common type of illocutionary act in the main characters' utterances in the film A Man Called Otto, with 173 instances, followed by directive (126), expressive (55), declarative (24), and commissive (13). It may be inferred that there are several forms of illocutionary acts, with the representative act appearing most frequently in the major characters of the film A Man Called Otto.

Abstract

This research paper aims to know whether there is a significant effect of Padlet application towards students’ narrative writing at the Tenth Grade of SMAN 1 Malingping Lebak-Banten In Academic Year 2023/2024. The authors paper used quantitative approach and quasiexperimental design. The technique in choosing the sample is cluster random sampling; the authors used XE 7 (36 students) as class experiment and XE 10 (36 students) as class control. The experimental group was taught narrative text in writing activity used Padlet application, where as the control group was taught used Google classroom. At the first meeting of the research, the researcher gave a pre-test to both the experimental group and the control group to measure the extent of students’ narrative writing. Then gave treatment for five meetings and the last meeting of the research, the researcher gave a post-test to find out the final results and to prove the significant effect after being given treatment using a Padlet application in the experimental group. In analyzing the data, the author used independent sample t-test by SPSS 29 for windows showed the value of t calculated> t- table was 25.100 in experimental class. And its significance value because less than 0.05 (P = 0.00 < 0.05 in experimental class). It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the Padlet application has a good effect on Students’ Narrative Writing. In addition, this Padlet application is not only effectively used in learning writing but could also be used as an online learning medium because this Padlet application has space to communicate freely between teachers and students as well as between other students.

This research paper aims to know whether there is a significant effect of Padlet application towards students' writing skill of Recount text at the Eleven Grade of SMAN 12 Pandeglang - Banten in Academic Year 2024/2025. The research paper used the quantitative approach and quasi-experimental design. The technique in choosing the sample is cluster random sampling; the researcher used XI.3 (35 students) as class experiment and XI.6 (36 students) as class control. In the Collecting data technique, the researcher gives pre-test and post-test. In analyzing the data, From the test results with independent sample t-test obtained t-count = -18.249 with significant 2-tailed = 0.000 < a = 0.05, then Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. In other words, there is a significant effect of using Padlet towards students' writing skills of narrative text.

Abstract

The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method with a data collection technique in the form of a questionnaire through student worksheets. The results of the study showed that there were a total of 18 (eighteen) slang words commonly used by students in grades XI.5 and XI.7 of SMAN 12 Pandeglang. In grade XI.5, there were a total of ten slang words. Seven of the data were included in the category of slang patterns in the form of words, three data in the slang pattern in the form of abbreviations. No data was found for the type of slang pattern in numbers, phrases, and in sentences. Then in grade XI.7, a total of eight slang words were found. Two of them were slang patterns in the form of words, six data were found in the slang pattern in the form of abbreviations. No data was found for the type of slang pattern in numbers, phrases, and slang patterns in sentences. The positive impact of using this slang language is that students become more creative. Regardless of whether this slang language is disturbing or not, as long as it is used in the right situation, the right media, and the right communicator. The use of slang can also make it difficult for language users to use it properly and correctly. The use of slang on Facebook is very dynamic, because every student has the creativity and ability to create a new slang word. Therefore, research on slang can continue to be carried out from time to time as a sign that language tends to change.

Abstract

Tourism plays a significant role in regional economic growth, especially in areas with unique cultural and natural attractions. As global tourism continues to expand, the ability to communicate in English has become essential for individuals involved in the tourism sector. This article aims at increasing students' awareness and motivation to learn English for Tourism through local wisdom in Citorek village, Lebak regency, Banten. Specifically, students are expected to have (1) communication skills; students need the ability to communicate with foreign tourists, from providing information to serving their needs, (2) knowledge about the destination; students must understand the ins and outs of tourist destinations in Citorek Lebak, including history, culture and tourist attractions, (3) offering skills; students need to master the skills of offering tourism products and services in English, such as accommodation, culinary delights and tourist activities, as well as (4) career preparation; mastering English opens up career opportunities for students in the tourism industry. Local wisdom is a valuable asset that can be integrated into learning english for tourism. With the right strategy, students can improve their English skills and contribute to tourism development in Citorek Lebak Banten.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze English textbooks Work in Progress. Based on the Independent Curriculum, there are many references for achievements learning that refers to six elements of English skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing and presenting in an integrated manner. The data analysis in this research was carried out by selecting data and presenting it isdata, interpret data, and draw conclusions. Data is evaluated with using the categories high, low, and null. Analysis is carried out based on chapters where this textbook has six chapters. Results of this research shows that in general the English book "Work in Progress" exists some elements of the English language that correspond to what is suggested by Merdeka curriculum which refers to six skills in English. For the listening element in textbooks in each chapter have a high level of Conformity with the curriculum merdeka, for the speaking element in the textbook Curriculum.There are only 5 chapters that have a high level of suitability, in the reading element in each the chapters have a low level of conformity with the independent curriculum, and the viewing elements in each chapter have a level high suitability because it is in accordance with the Merdeka curriculum.The Research and presenting elements in each chapter have levels high conformity refer in the grid of the book Work in Progress it can be concluded that based on that the English textbook "Work in Progress" is appropriate suggested by Merdeka curriculum even though there are elements that are still not appropriate.

Abstract

This research focused on analysis of types and functions of code switching used by El Barack in TikTok videos. Ten samples of TikTok videos from the @inijedar channel featuring El Barack, the writers applied poplack theory which functioned to categorize the types of code-switching, and Gumperz which functioned to explain what are function used by El Barack on TikTok video. This research also adopted descriptive-qualitative methods. Data collection was carried out using observation, documentation and checklists. This research focuses on speeches containing code switching produced by El Barack. The analysis showed that subjects A4 to A10 showed different types of code switching, whereas subjects A1 to A3 did not. Overall, this research identified 58 examples of types and functions of code-switching across ten videos. These findings highlight the prevalence and variations of code switching in social media content and its potential implications for communication and education.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of using short stories on students' reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is one of the essential skills in learning English which is often a challenge for students. In this research, short stories were chosen as a learning medium to increase students' interest and motivation in reading, and make it easier for them to understand the text. Students find it difficult to understand English lessons because they have not mastered basic reading skills, both in English and their mother tongue. This research uses an experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design. Data were analyzed using the t test to determine significant differences between the two groups. The results of the research show that there is a significant increase in the reading comprehension of students who learn using short stories compared to students who use the comic method. This shows that the use of short stories as open-ended material can improve students' reading comprehension skills effectively. Data was collected through pre-test and post-test, then analyzed using normality T-test, homogeneity test, and paired t-test with the help of SPSS 22. The effect of Shrot Story on students of reading comprehension at the eight grade student of MTs. Abdi bina insani jiput Pandeglang in Academic Year 2023/2024 is. This is proven by the t-test value in the paired t-test of -11.158 with a df of 19 and a two-sided significance of 0.000, which means Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In other words, there is a significant difference in post-test scores between the experimental and control classes. It can be concluded that the use of short story strategies significantly improves The reading ability of students at Mts Abdi can be human strategies provide a better understanding of the structure and techniques of short story books and more overall ideas, and improve their reading abilities

Abstract

The aim of this research is the significant effect of the Wattpad application significantly improves the reading comprehension abilities of class X students at SMAN 2 Malingping. Using a pre-test and post-test group design, the methodology used is quasi-experimental, and the research methodology is quantitative. The population of this research was 94 students, and the sample was 60 students. In analyzing the data, researcher used achievement tests with SPSS 25 statistical computing to analyze hypothesis tests. Researcher obtained tcount results (0.285) and two-sided significance = 0.465 < α 0.05. From this data it can be interpreted that there is a significant difference between the two groups in obtaining scores, because the result is a significant value grether than 0.05, which means Ha is accepted. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the application of Wattpad had a good role in students' reading comprehension skills of report texts. Apart from that, the Wattpad application, apart from being effective in learning to read, can also be used as a medium for reading online books because the Wattpad application has free space for communication between teachers and students as well as between students and other teachers use the comments column provided.
