Abstract

The ability to solve mathematical problems is a crucial aspect that students need to develop so they can apply mathematical concepts in real-life situations, not just understand the theory. This study aims to assess the ability of fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Dawuan, Cirebon Regency, in solving mathematical problems on the topic of fractions, with a focus on the aspects of problem understanding, solution planning, and evaluation of the results of the solution. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study, with six students categorized into three levels of high, medium, and low ability. The instrument used was a descriptive test consisting of nine questions related to problem solving in the material of fractions. Data analysis in this study included the stages of data reduction techniques, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings showed that of the six students, as many as two students (33%) were classified as having high problem-solving ability, four students (67%) were in the medium category, and none of the students were included in the low category (0%). Although most students showed good abilities, many still dominated the medium category. Some students did not write complete information and questions, and had difficulty choosing the correct operation. In addition, both high and medium category students often did not recheck their answers. These findings emphasize the importance of training students to solve problems carefully and check their final solutions.

Abstract

This quantitative study aims to examine the influence of the learning environment on students’ mathematical representation abilities. The research is motivated by the relatively low levels of mathematical representation skills observed among students, which may be associated with variations in the quality of their learning environments. The study was conducted at a junior high school in Cirebon during the 2024/2025 academic year, involving 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire to measure students’ perceptions of the learning environment and a test instrument to assess their mathematical representation abilities, including verbal, visual, and symbolic representations. The findings indicate that the learning environment has a significant influence on students’ mathematical representation abilities. However, the results also reveal that both the quality of the learning environment and students’ mathematical representation abilities are relatively low. Statistical analysis shows that the learning environment accounts for 9.3% of the variance in students’ mathematical representation abilities, while the remaining 91.7% is explained by other factors beyond the learning environment. Future studies should explore the influence of additional factors such as learning motivation, instructional methods, and cognitive abilities on students’ mathematical representation skills. Moreover, research involving larger and more diverse populations is recommended to enhance the generalizability and applicability of the findings.

Abstract

Spatial competence and mathematical creative thinking represent two essential capabilities that students must develop to succeed in 21st-century mathematics education. This study examines the association of GeoGebra use with students' mathematical spatial ability, mathematical creative thinking, and the joint pattern of these two competencies. The study employed a quantitative descriptive-correlational design. The population comprised students of MTsN 1 Kota Cirebon, and the sample consisted of 29 students selected purposively based on their active participation in GeoGebra-assisted mathematics learning. The instruments were trialed on 27 students at MTs AlWahdah Sumber. Data analysis included Shapiro-Wilk normality, linearity, heteroscedasticity, simple linear regression, and MANOVA. The results showed a significant association between GeoGebra use and spatial ability (F = 67.162; p < .001; R² = .713; adjusted R² = .703), with a mean spatial ability score of 63.97 (high category). A significant association was also found with creative thinking (F = 6.785; p = .015; R² = .201; adjusted R² = .171), with a mean score of 54.00 (medium category). The reported MANOVA produced F = 390.317, p < .001, and partial η² = .967; however, because the reported multivariate table contains the intercept rather than GeoGebra as a predictor, this result is interpreted cautiously as a joint multivariate pattern rather than as an estimate of GeoGebra's unique contribution. Overall, the findings indicate that GeoGebra is more strongly aligned with spatial ability than with creative thinking, while creative thinking requires complementary structured problem-solving activities.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the association between growth mindset and students' mathematical literacy and mathematical representation skills in vocational high school. A quantitative approach with an ex post facto method of associative-correlational nature was employed. The study population consisted of all 10th-grade students at SMK Bina Insan Mandiri in Cirebon. The sample consisted of 20 10th-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a growth mindset questionnaire (25 valid items, α = .943), a mathematical literacy test (6 valid items, α = .702), and a mathematical representation test (7 valid items, α = .844). Data were analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). The Shapiro-Wilk normality test confirmed that dependent variables were normally distributed (Sig. = .787 and .230), linearity assumptions were satisfied (Sig. = .853 and .165), and Levene's homogeneity test was met (Sig. = .467 and .121). MANOVA results using Pillai’s Trace indicated F = 4,699 with Sig. = .004, indicating that growth mindset was simultaneously and significantly associated with both mathematical skills. Partially, growth mindset was significantly associated with mathematical literacy (F = 14.701; Sig. = .000; R² = 0.634) and mathematical representation (F = 8.790; Sig. = .002; R² = 0.508). Students with high growth mindset demonstrated significantly higher mathematical literacy and representation skills than those in the medium and low groups. Given the small sample size (n = 20) drawn from a single school through purposive sampling, these findings should be interpreted as preliminary and are not intended to be generalized beyond the studied context.
