Abstract

The present study was devoted to the implementation of a community service to Elementary school teachers aiming at improving the teachers’ competence in designing and implementing authentic assessment. Participants of this activity were the elementary school teachers in Klungkung district in which the total number was 35 teachers. Before the training started, the teachers were given preliminary test to determine the extent of the ability or competences of teachers on authentic assessment. After figuring out the initial abilities and identifying the needs of the teachers on authentic assessment, then the training was conducted. The results of the final test showed that the ability of teachers in designing and implementing authentic assessment increased significantly. In addition, interviews and questionnaires showed that the motivation of teachers on designing and conducting authentic assessment also increased positively.

Abstract

Having good speaking skills is highly important for us to communicate in English. This is due to the fact that speaking is the first impression in communicating with others. Therefore, this study intends to improve students' speaking skills through think pair share combined with pictures. Preliminary research showed that vocational high school students encountered problems in speaking, particularly fluency, comprehension, and grammar. Moreover, the research objective was to know whether the speaking skill of vocational high school students could be improved through think pair share combined with pictures. This study made use of a classroom action research design. The research instruments administered to collect the data were in the form of a test and a post-test. The data were analyzed by comparing the pre-test and post-test results. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle. The results showed positive responses on the implementation of think pair share combine with picture. Based on the research findings, the speaking skills of vocational high school students could be improved using think pair share combined with pictures.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the correlation between high school students’ grammar and writing ability. The study made used of a correlational research design. The study utilized two types of tests, those are grammar test and writing test. This study found that there is a positive correlation between grammar and the writing ability of high school students. Moreover, the study suggests that teachers should intensifies the teaching of grammar and writing to improve students’ language skills. This study implies that grammar and writing ability should be really taught intensively in the classroom.

Abstract

Writing is an important language skill that needs to be developed continuously and intensively to enhance the student's language competence. This study used a classroom action research design conducted in two cycles of learning activities to improve students' writing skills through a brainstorming strategy. This study was conducted in an EFL classroom, and the essential collection was done by administering a pretest, posttests, and a questionnaire. The results showed that the student's writing skills improved significantly in the first and second learning cycles compared to the pretest result. Therefore, the brainstorming strategy is considered to be a very effective strategy to be implemented in the writing classroom. This study suggests that teachers should consider using the brainstorming strategy to improve students' writing skills.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is an important language skill that needs to be developed continuously and intensively to enhance the student's language competence. This study used a classroom action research design conducted in two cycles of learning activities to improve students' listening comprehension through the BARA learning strategy. Indonesian educators developed the BARA learning strategy consisting of four learning stages: brainstorming, activating, reinforcing, and applying. This trial of the BARA strategy in an EFL classroom established the final construction of the BARA learning strategy. Data collection was done by administering a pretest, posttests and a questionnaire. The results showed that the student's listening comprehension improved significantly in the first and second learning cycles compared to the pretest result. Therefore, the BARA strategy is very effective in teaching listening comprehension. This study suggests that teachers should consider using the BARA learning strategy to improve students' language competence.

Abstract

Writing ability is one of the abilities of a student to contribute what they know. Writing is a language skill that has an important role in human life. In writing students often encounter several obstacles, therefore, teachers are encouraged to implement appropriate teaching methods to ensure that the learning activities become effective. This study made use of a classroom action research design with two cycles of learning activities to improve students' writing skills through BEST strategy. Data were collected through pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The results showed that the writing skill of the students improved significantly from the first and second cycles when compared to the results of the pre-test. Therefore, the BEST strategy is considered very effective for teaching writing skills. This study implies that teachers should consider using BEST strategy to enhance students' writing skills.

Abstract

Writing is a crucial language skill that must be actively and consistently developed. This study used a brainstorming technique to improve student's writing skills through two cycles of learning activities using a classroom action research design. The primary data for this study were gathered by administering a questionnaire, post-tests, and pre-tests in an EFL classroom. Compared to the pre-test result, the results demonstrated that the student's writing skills had improved dramatically in the first and second learning cycles. As a result, using the brainstorming technique in writing classes is highly beneficial. According to this study, educators should consider implementing the brainstorming technique to help students become better writers.

Abstract

The reality that has occurred so far is that many students struggle to write texts using English, which has encouraged teachers to conduct Classroom Action Research because student motivation is still low; this research aims to increase students' motivation and ability to learn English, incredibly Descriptive Text material. The image media used in this research are readily available around us, cheap, familiar, and attractive to students. The method used in this Classroom Action Research utilizes Student Team Achievement Division (STAD), which is project-based learning because it is also used to motivate students to write and even do good work. The subjects in the Classroom Action Research here are state middle school students. The research results show that image media dramatically increases students' motivation and ability to write Descriptive Text. Image media is exciting and effective as a source of ideas for students when generating ideas for writing descriptive text. So, in the end, students are motivated and able to write descriptive text well. Several things influence students' low motivation in writing recount text, including students finding English difficult, feeling bored with the learning situation, and students' lack of enthusiasm.

Abstract

The selection of appropriate and ideal learning models by teaching staff or teachers so that they can be applied in the teaching and learning process is a fundamental factor that significantly influences student interest and achievement of learning outcomes. Several learning models can be applied in schools' teaching and learning process, one of which is the learning model Project Based Learning (PjBL). This research was conducted due to the student's lack of interest and learning outcomes caused by conventional learning methods, which seemed less effective and monotonous, so students did not play an active role in learning. This can be seen from the average student learning outcomes in learning about introducing myself who have not reached the minimum learning criterion so that the learning model is applied Project Based Learning (PjBL) is expected to be a solution-appropriate, effective, and efficient way to increase student interest and learning outcomes in English subjects, especially material Introducing Myself in the classroom. The research method used in classroom action research is the learning model PBjL. This is qualitative research. Based on the results of data analysis in the field, it was found that the use of learning models PBjL can increase the interest and learning outcomes of the students about introducing myself until the learning model PBjL teachers can apply it in learning activities in the classroom because it can increase student interest and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Reading is one of the language skills that needs to be mastered by the students in language learning to enable students to communicate in English effectively. Consequently, teachers are encouraged to implement appropriate teaching methods to ensure that the learning activities become effective in reading comprehension classes. This study used classroom action research to build up the students’ reading comprehension through collaborative learning. Data from the study were collected through pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The results showed that the student's reading comprehension of the seventh-grade students could be improved through collaborative learning. Therefore, collaborative learning is considered very effective for teaching reading comprehension. This study implies that teachers should consider using collaborative learning to enhance students' reading comprehension.
