Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the Indonesian government implementing work-from-home and Distance Learning (PJJ) regulations that affect how people communicate with others, how close they feel to each other, and how they resolve family problems. This research aims to analyze the different types of communication within the family that influence the level of closeness and differences of opinion before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This research uses quantitative research methods, collecting data through survey questionnaires and using Statistical Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) as the primary technique for data analysis. The results of this study show substantial changes in communication and conflict patterns in families before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, no significant differences were found before and during the pandemic in the relationship between family communication patterns and family intimacy, as well as between family intimacy and family conflict. Family intimacy is essential in mediating the relationship between family communication patterns and conflict. This study shows that increasing levels of family communication, characterized by a lack of understanding of the roles of individual family members and a focus on dialogical communication and equality, can give rise to disputes that weaken unity and harmony within the family unit. This research contributes to the field of family communication theory by showing the impact of external circumstances, such as a pandemic, on internal family dynamics.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the environmental communication conducted by the citizen of the Dayak Wehea Tribe in Nehas Liah bing Village, East Kutai, East Kalimantan, which is a society that lives around the forest and relies on the forest as a source of life and also has local knowledge about how to relate to the nature, and other creatures, which must intersect with modern development that enters the territory of the Dayak Wehea tribe and how it causes social changes. This research was conducted with an ethnographic communication method to examine the community of speech, language, culture, and rituals. Data were collected by observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of archival, textual, or visual data obtained from the field research. We conclude that the Wehea Dayak Tribe combines pragmatic and constitutive environmental communication, which is seen in the management of the protected forest of Wehea and the series of paddy rituals (Lom Plai). The results of this research explain that the two communication models as an effort to preserve the environment cannot be separated if we want to increase the participation and involvement of group members and the citizen in general. Keywords: Environmental communication, ritual communication, environmental conservation, Lom Plai, Dayak Wehea tribe

Conflicts and crises are situations that cannot be predicted, can come at any time, and cannot be avoided, so crises management actions and conflict resolution are needed from demonstration conflicts to commemorate the New York Agreement in August 2019 in Malang City. The situation that occurs is a government crisis situation that requires conflict resolution and crisis management by Malang City so that crises and conflicts can be muted so that they do not continue. The research to see how Malang City handles this crisis and conflict resolution uses a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative research type. This study aims to find strategies to reduce crises and reduce ongoing conflicts. The method of data collection carried out in this study was an interview with the Public Relations of Malang City Government, supported by data collection, which was carried out through documentation. The Apologia theory and the conflict theory used in this study show that Malang City uses the deny strategy, conciliation strategy, transcendence strategy, and bolstering strategy. Abstract

Health consumers or patients become aware of their health literacy by obtaining, processing, understanding, and communicating health-related information when they come to health decisions. However, background knowledge obtained would set patients' expectations and satisfaction, and the expression of patients' expectation gap that creates dissatisfaction or concern with a service provided is called complaint. This present study aimed to obtain a comprehensive understanding about the role and activities of public relations on patient complaint management at X public hospital in Indonesia. This research applied a qualitative method using the purposive sampling technique. The research finding showed that the informants at the hospital lacked communication and public relations knowledge, and no training was given to the staff involved in communication matters. This absence of an academic foundation to guide the work directly affects the professionalism of the public relations manager, especially during managing complaints and making policies. As a result, the public relations department of the hospital did not have a direct channel for the patients to register their complaints, and the only indirect patient complaint facility aimed at the public relations was not managed by the public relations department. In short, this study shows that the public relations manager did not have a management role on the complaint management at the hospital, which consequently brings a snowball effect to the overall management of complaints due to the practices of encroachment, and the hospital must provide more training and professional coaching to bring back the role and functions of public relations.

Abstract

Micro-businesses have the largest number of entrepreneurs (98,67%) among the total number of businesses in Indonesia and play a crucial role as the driving force of the country’s economy. However, the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit Indonesia has had a significant negative impact, including on the economic sector. Around 82,9% of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have experienced negative effects during the pandemic, with a decline in revenue of over 30%. Therefore, in order for micro-businesses to recover from the pandemic’s impact, their performance needs to be improved to achieve business goals. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of social media usage and leadership style factors on the achievement of micro-business goals in Depok city. This study utilizes a quantitative research approach with a causal survey design. The research sample consists of 340 participants selected through purposive sampling. The sample includes micro-business owners who have participated in the New Entrepreneur program in 2022 and were selected through questionnaire completion. Hypothesis testing using SPSS programming is employed as the research design. The result of this study indicate that social media usage and leadership style factors have a positive and significant influence on the achievement of micro-business goals, both partially and simultaneously. The research suggests that micro-business owners should maximize the use of social media to manage customer databases and enhance their influence in business leadership. Additionally, it is recommended that the Depok City Government supports micro-businesses through training and development activities

Abstract

Abstract

The focus of this study is on how Lion Air managed crisis communication following the Boeing 737 MAX 8 crash of Flight JT-610. The research delves into the use of storytelling in media statements as a strategy for crisis communication during the aftermath of the crash. It outlines Lion Air's goals in sharing information and engaging with the public and media in the midst of this crisis. The study utilizes a qualitative text analysis to scrutinize three specific media statements released during the crisis. By applying Michael L. Kent's storytelling elements, the analysis of the media statements concentrates on factors like emplotment, narrative theory, identification, form, and masterplots. The selected statements cover the immediate aftermath of the crash on October 29, 2018; a subsequent statement on March 13, 2019, addressing broader safety concerns surrounding the Boeing 737 MAX 8; and a final statement on October 26, 2019, summarizing findings from the National Transportation Safety Committee's investigation. The research findings suggest that employing storytelling through straightforward text in media statements, incorporating credible character depiction, structured narrative, empathy, and compelling storytelling, can notably influence an organization's reputation recovery and improvement. Well-crafted and timely media releases are essential as primary information sources for the media, especially in crisis scenarios where prompt and precise information dissemination is critical. This method ensures that information, though disseminated quickly, maintains relevant and impactful storytelling aspects. The study concludes that storytelling, characterized by humanistic, empathetic, and coherent narratives across media statements, can be effectively utilized by Lion Air to uphold consistent and narrative-focused communication with the public through the media.

Abstract

This study aims to dissect the completeness of the news using syntactic, script, thematic and rhetorical structure analysis through analysis on the Prokopim Ponorogo Regency and Prokopim Madiun Regency websites. In recent years, online mass media has grown significantly, providing local governments with new ways to communicate with the public such as building communication on websites. Mass media websites reflect dynamic and open communication strategies, offering great opportunities for local governments to achieve objectivity and communicate with the public. Functioning as the main tool in public relations practices at the district level, websites play an important role as interactive platforms that influence the relationship between the district government and the community. Framing, as an integral part of PR, helps organizations shape and establish reality through perspectives on the external environment. By utilizing the framing analysis method of Zhondang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki, this study produces findings in the form of similarities and differences in news framing. Both use an inverted pyramid approach in news structure and present news with 5W + 1H elements. However, there are differences in framing construction in both media in reporting, such as the structure and use of words in the news. Overall, these differences in framing can influence the socio-psychological conditions of the Madiun and Ponorogo communities.

Abstract

Background: Sexual harassment incidents at higher education institutions can trigger crises that have a detrimental impact on public trust and institutional reputation. Purpose: This study analyzes the crisis management and reaction approach employed by the University of Argopuro in the aftermath of a sexual harassment event involving its Rector. Methods: The study employed a qualitative case study approach and collected data through in-depth interviews with senior administrators and document analysis. Results: The findings reveal that the university implemented a five-step crisis management model, integrating adaptive strategies with Image Restoration Theory (IRT) and Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). These strategies focused on transparency, accountability, and victim protection. The study highlights those key methods, including appointing a spokesperson, issuing press releases, forming a crisis management team, and establishing a Gender Studies Centre to foster systemic reform and prevention. The study offers four novel crisis response strategies: attitude statements for transparency, victim protection plans, organizational accountability mechanisms, and follow-up initiatives to sustain cultural transformation. While SCCT and IRT provided a foundational framework, this study highlights the limitations of the frameworks in addressing the deeper systemic issues surrounding sexual harassment, emphasizing the need for long-term cultural change. Moreover, the results highlight the need to integrate crisis communication theories with adaptive, victim-centered approaches to address preventable crises effectively. Conclusions: The study concludes that a comprehensive and transparent crisis management process can mitigate reputational damage, restore stakeholder trust, and promote systemic reforms.  Implications: The study contributes to public relations literature by establishing the applicability of combined theoretical and adaptive strategies in complex academic crises, recommending practical insights for public relations practitioners in higher education institutions worldwide. Future research should expand the application of these strategies across diverse cultural and organizational contexts to validate their effectiveness.
