Abstract

Hydroponic system is an alternative agricultural cultivation technology and a potential system to overcome the decreasing availability of land. Tomato production with this system has its own market segment. Balanced nutrient management combined with inoculation of functional microbial consortium (N-fixing bacteria and phosphate solubilizers) is one of the efforts to increase tomato production in a hydroponic system. This experiment aimed to examine the effect of microbial consortium and hydroponic nutrition on tomato plant growth, Azotobacter spp. population, N uptake and tomato yield. The research design used was a factorial randomized block design (RBD) consisted of two factors. The first factor was the dose of the microbial consortium, consisting of three levels (0 mL/polybag, 5 mL/polybag, and 10 mL/polybag. The second factor was the nutritional dose consisting of three levels (0 mL, 250 mL, and 500 mL). The experimental results showed that there was no interaction between the microbial consortium treatment nutrients on hydroponic plants’ height, N uptake, Azotobacter spp. population and tomato yield. Increased nutrient dose significantly increased N uptake, with the highest yield at 500 ml/pot. But the increased nutrients dose did not lead to significantly different tomato yields. Inoculation of the microbial consortium did not significantly increase all tested parameters.

Abstract

Agricultural waste is rich in cellulosic material that is difficult to degrade but can be decomposed by cellulase enzymes. Cellulosic material is an organic component abundantly in nature in the form of cellulose and hemicellulose polymer. Utilization of microbes in the process of waste bioconversion can be done to get added value from the waste material into other products such as organic fertilizer. Cellulase-producing microbes can be isolated from various sources, one of which is from termite nests. The use of microbes from termite nests as decomposers for composting high-yielding agricultural waste was carried out in this study. Cellulolytic microbial isolates (combination of bacteria and fungi and without decomposers) were applied to agricultural wastes high in cellulose content: rice straw, bagasse, and oil palm empty fruit bunches. Randomized Block Design was applied and each treatment was and repeated 3 times. The composting process was carried out for 1 month indoors. The results showed that cellulolytic microbial consortium obtained from termite nests reduced the compost cellulose content of bagasse agricultural waste in one month. Whereas rice straw and oil palm empty fruit bunches showed a tendency to decrease cellulose content because cellulose degradation by decomposer microbes still continues after one month of incubation.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the largest coconut (Coconus nucifera L.) producing country in the world. Cocopeat can be mixed with chicken manure because of its relatively higher nutrient content compared to other manures. Cocopeat and chicken manure mixture can be an alternative to soilless planting media to support sustainable agriculture. In this study, the chemical and biological characters of cocopeat and chicken manure mixture were analyzed. Five different of combinations of cocopeat and chicken manure mixture: A (1: 1), B (2: 1), C (1: 2), D (2: 3), E (3: 2) were used as treatment. A Completely Randomize Design (CRD) with two replications were used. Data were analyzed with Independent T-test methods. The lowest C/N (33,39) was from D treatment (2:3), highest P2O5 content (0,08%) by C treatment (2:1), highest K2O content (0,03%) from A treatment (1:1) as control, the highest Ca-dd content (31,3%) was E treatment (3:2), and the highest Mg-dd content (1,45%) was obtained from control. All treatments reached the minimum moisture content limit for planting media. The total number of highest bacteria (161 x 107 cfu/g) is showed by D treatment (2:3), and the highest fungi level (58 x104 cfu/g) shown by C treatment (2:1).

Abstract

Application of certain fertilizer during long-term food crops production, might increase the heavy metal (HM) level in soil. An inexpensive and easy method to decrease this contaminant uptake by plants is application of humic acid (HA) which has the capacity to bind toxic substances. Pot experiment had been conducted to observe the influence of organic-based HA on the growth and yield of rice grown in soil contaminated with Cadmium and Lead. The experiment laid in Randomized Block Design with four treatments and six replications. Rice was grown in Inceptisols and treated with HA extracted from various organic matter. Control plants did not receive any HA. All plants had not shown any HM toxicity symptoms. The plant height as well as straw dry weight in HA-treated soil was no different with control plant. Various HA decreased available Cadmium and Lead in soil and in unhusked grain but did not affect yield traits. However, the reduced content of HM was also caused by soil acidity that shift to neutral during puddling. This experiment suggested that HA have a role to control HM availability in paddy soil and hence reduced their uptake by rice plants.

Abstract

Biofertilizers contain bacteria that can offset the use of inorganic fertilizers. However, using bacteria as biofertilizers also requires carrier materials such as bran, compost, and Azolla flour to maintain the viability of the bacteria before being transferred to the soil. This study aimed to determine the effect of consortium biofertilizer with different carriers and doses of NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer on the growth and yield of upland rice on Inceptisols from Jatinangor. This study used a randomized block design with two factors: the carrier of consortium biofertilizer (compost, rice bran, and Azolla) and the dose of NPK fertilizer (0%, 50%, and 100%). The experimental results showed no interaction between the consortium's biofertilizers with carrier and NPK fertilizer doses on plant height, number of tillers, weight of rice grain, and weight of 100 grains of upland rice plants. The independent factor of biological fertilizer with carrier material significantly affected plant height, and the independent factor of single NPK fertilizer significantly affected plant height, number of tillers, and rice grain weight.
