Abstract

The increase in demand for feed impacts the availability of feed ingredients such as soybean meal (SBM), which is still 100% derived from imports. This study aimed to analyze the factors impacting the import of SBM as a crucial feed ingredient in Indonesia, offering insights for governmental policy-making. Secondary data spanning 2019-2022, encompassing SBM import quantities, price, and quality, were sourced from the Import Service Recommendation System. Additionally, annual feed production data were obtained from the Feed Directorate Information System, overseen by the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia. SBM prices were sourced from World Bank online data. The dataset spanned four years (2019-2022), each comprising twelve months, with eight parameters under examination. Multiple linear regression was employed to evaluate the influence of independent variables including price upon arrival in Indonesia (USD), moisture content, protein content, crude fiber content, crude fat content, feed production, and the world price (USD) on the dependent variable of import volume. The results showed that all independent variables significantly affect the volume of SBM imports. Partially, variables like feed production, international prices, prices upon arrival in Indonesia, and moisture content have a significant and negative effect on SBM imports. The coefficient of determination shows that the independent variables explain 66.1% of the import volume of SBM. The study highlights critical factors influencing SBM imports in Indonesia. Effective policies addressing these factors could enhance the sustainability of the poultry farming industry. Key words: animal feed, import, linear regression, soybean meal

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of including jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) meal in the ration and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) supplementation on the performance and carcass yield of IPB D1 chickens. Jack bean meal (JBM) contains a high-energy, protein-rich feed ingredient that can substitute soybean meal, though it contains antinutrients such as hydrocyanic acid. Pre-treating jack beans through soaking and peeling reduces these antinutrients, allowing JBM to replace up to 20% of the diet. The inclusion of exogenous enzymes like protease can further enhance nutrient absorption and broiler health. The study involved 240 IPB D1 chickens, divided into four groups: control feed without LAB (J0L0), control feed with LAB (J0L1), treatment feed without LAB (J1L0), and treatment feed with LAB (J1L1). Feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured weekly from weeks 3 to 9, and carcass yields were evaluated at the end of the study. Results showed significant variations (p<0.05) in weekly feed intake, BWG, and FCR across the treatments. Chickens fed JBM had lower (p<0.05) feed intake and BWG but these improved with LAB supplementation. FCR values improved significantly (p<0.05) with LAB supplementation in both control and treatment feeds. Carcass yield analysis indicated that LAB supplementation led to higher (p<0.05) final body weight and carcass yield, while JBM inclusion resulted in lower values (p<0.05). The study concludes that while JBM can negatively affect chicken performance due to antinutrients, LAB supplementation can mitigate these effects, enhancing both performance and carcass yield. In addition, probiotics are beneficial in poultry diets, counteracting antinutritional factors in feed ingredients like Jack bean meal. Abstract

ABSTRACT. Jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.) is a potential alternative protein source to replace soybean meal in local feed formulations. While jack beans are high in protein, their high levels of anti-nutritional factors limit their use. Identifying effective processing techniques to improve the quality of jack beans is therefore essential. This study examines the effects of incorporating soaked and peeled jack bean meal into broiler diets on internal organs, digestive organs, and intestinal villi morphology. The jack beans were processed by soaking for 3 hours, peeling, oven drying, and grinding into meal form. A completely randomized design was used, with three levels of processed jack bean inclusion (0% JBM0, 5% JBM5, and 10% JBM10), each replicated six times. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by a post hoc Tukey test for significant findings. The results indicated that soaking for 3 hours and peeling effectively lowered the hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content from 207.61 ppm to 51.21 ppm. The inclusion of processed jack bean meal had no significant impact (P>0.05) on internal organs, digestive tract organs, or intestinal villi morphology. These findings suggest that processed jackbean meal can replace soybean meal in poultry feed at levels up to 10% without adverse effects on internal organs.

Abstract

Abstract

The Samurai 1 variety is a genetically mutated strain with superior agronomic characteristics and enhanced nutrient content. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of harvest maturity stages and fibrolytic enzyme (Sunsonzyme) treatment on the nutrient value, fermentative quality, and nutrient digestibility of Sorghum bicolor cv. Samurai 1 silage. The silage quality was assessed using a completely randomized design with a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement. Sorghum was harvested at three different maturity stages, namely 85, 90, and 95 days, with fibrolytic enzyme added at 0%, 0.025%, and 0.05% of the dry matter. In vitro fermentability and digestibility were evaluated using a randomized block factorial design, which was also based on the same three harvest stages and enzyme levels. Observed variables included the nutrient composition of the sorghum, physical characteristics and nutrient content of the silage, as well as in vitro fermentability and digestibility. The results showed a significant interaction between harvest maturity and enzyme level on lactic acid production and total volatile fatty acid (VFA). Harvest age significantly affected (p<0.05) all variables, while the treatment of fibrolytic enzyme significantly increased ammonia (NH₃) and total VFA concentrations, as well as reduced the fiber fraction of the silage (p<0.05). The harvest age of 90 days showed the best quality in terms of nutrients, silage, and rumen fermentability. The addition of enzyme levels up to 0.05% improved the fermentative quality of silage, reduced fiber fractions, and enhanced rumen fermentability.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) leaves extract (CLE) in drinking water on the performance and health profile of IPB-D1 chickens. Cassava leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins which have antioxidant and antibacterial properties. These compounds can provide positive effects such as feed efficiency, improving growth performance and health status of chickens by improving the immune system and reducing oxidative stress. Cassava leaves extract acts as a phytogenic additive that can be given in livestock drinking water. This study used 180 IPB-D1 chickens aged 2–8 weeks were randomly assigned to three treatments: CLE0 (control), CLE1 (17 ml/l CLE), and CLE2 (50 ml/l CLE). Parameters observed included growth performance, organ morphometry, hematological profiles, and ileal histology. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (p<0.05). cassava leaves extract supplementation did not adversely affect growth or feed intake. Final body weight and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not significantly different among the groups. A reduction in leukocyte counts was observed, particularly in the CLE2 group, with a relative increase in heterophils, though values remained within physiological limits. Histological analysis revealed a significant increase in villus surface area in the CLE2 group, followed by CLE1, compared to the control (CLE0), suggesting enhanced intestinal morphology and nutrient absorption potential. Cassava leaves extract can be given in the drinking water of IPB-D1 chickens without disrupting their performance and health profile. These findings indicate that cassava leaves extract can improve gut structure without compromising performance, supporting its application as a safe and beneficial phytogenic additive in poultry diets.
