Abstract

Abstract This research was aimed at knowing the relationship among three variables, genre awareness (X1), critical thinking disposition (X2), and reading comprehension (Y). The study was conducted at SMAN 4 South Tangerang, and the participants were 180 students of the twelfth-grade students. A quantitative method was used to get through this research using the correlation as the design. Some instruments were developed to collect the data; they are tests (genre awareness test and reading comprehension test) and questionnaire to measure students’ critical thinking disposition adapted from Facione (2000). In data analysis, r product moment and R multiple regression coefficient tests was applied to test the correlation value through SPSS 21 program. The research found that (1) there is a correlation between genre awareness (X1) and reading comprehension with correlation value ro 0.876 which is higher than 0.05, (2) there is a correlation between students’ critical thinking disposition (X2) and their reading comprehension (Y) with value ro 0.263 which is higher than 0.05, (3) there is a simultaneous correlation among students’ genre awareness and critical thinking disposition with their reading comprehension with correlation value Ry.12 0.881 and the ρ-value = 0.00 < 0.05 meaning that the Ho is rejected. The contribution of X1 and X2 to support the Y variable is found as 77.5%, or it is stated that reading comprehension success is determined by students’ genre awareness and their critical thinking disposition. How to Cite : Indra, H. (2017). Abstract

Cognitive psychology and cognitive science appear to agree that attention to stimuli is needed for long-term memory storage and that little, if any, learning can take place without attention. One strand of psycholinguistic research that has drawn quite a lot of interest, both from a theoretical and empirical perspective, is the role awareness plays in second language acquisition (SLA). To promote a further understanding of the role of awareness may potentially contribute to L2 development. This article will  briefly describe current theoretical approaches to the role of awareness in language learning,  review recent studies that have employed verbal reports to investigate the effects of awareness on L2 development, and  provide, based on the review, some awareness-raising pedagogical tasks for the L2 classroom setting.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyze interlanguage production made by ten eight-grade students who were enrolled in one of the secondary schools in Jakarta. Interlanguage happens when a learner talk in the target language but their linguistic framework is still the source language (any prior language they knew beforehand). It is intended to explore kinds of interlanguage that occur in their recount writing and to explain the potentials of why the errors emerge in their recount writing. The data of the study requires one recount text writing produced by the participants of this present study. This study employed a qualitative research design and it was specifically presented using a descriptive case study. Furthermore, document analysis is employed as the procedure of collecting data when analyzing the writing. The result of the study showed that based on students' recount writing, the interlanguage is detected from the way they formed passive sentences, incorrect verb agreement, unparalleled sentences, and L1 to L2 translation. In that sense, it can be concluded that interlanguage happens due to L1 tendency which still dominated the students' minds when producing the target language. Thus, the students should be assisted to practice the correct rules of English in their writing, especially in recount text to prevent any possible fossilization.
