Abstract

Abstract

In recent years, underweight remains a medium public health problem in Indonesia, despite the substantial decrease in prevalence, still, this long-standing issue are potentially altering children physical growth and cognitive development. This current study aims to investigate the association between parental smoking behavior and underweight in children by analyzing secondary data of the 2018 Indonesia Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS). A total sample of 39,451 children aged 5-12 years were analyzed in this study. Anthropometric measurement of body weight was obtained to identify underweight. A structure questionnaire was employed to obtained information on child sex (male or female), age (5-8 or 9-12), type of residence (urban or rural), parental age (under or older than 35), education (high: higher education graduate or under), working status (working or not working) and smoking behavior both among mother and father in the last one month. Among those who smoked, the average number of cigarettes being smoked was also questioned, as well as the experience of indoor smoking. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. There were 8.4% of underweight children in this study, 89.8% of parents were smoker, who 74.8% of them were father, on average smoked 14 cigarettes per day and 98.8% of them smoked inside the house. Underweight was not significantly associated with parental smoking behavior, type of residence, parental age and parental working status. Higher odds of being underweight was found among children age 5-8 years (OR 1.08, p = 0.04, 95% CI). While boys were protective factor against underweight (OR 0.75, p < 0.01, 95% CI). Despite no association found between parental smoking behavior and children underweight in current study, however, it remains relevant to remind parents that their smoking behavior, especially inside living space may hinder children physical growth and cognitive development.

Abstract

The problem of stunting remains a prevalent health issue in Indonesia. Stunting not only affects typically developing individuals but can also occur among persons with disabilities. The suboptimal prevention of stunting is largely due to insufficient knowledge regarding its control and prevention within the disability community. Based on this concern, the Community Service Team of UPNVJ conducted an outreach activity with the aim of educating persons with disabilities about stunting prevention. The implementation method of this activity consisted of three stages: firstly, the pre-activity phase involved preparing the necessary resources and conducting location surveys. Secondly, the execution phase included checking for stunting among participants followed by providing educational sessions on stunting prevention. Lastly, there were discussions on stunting prevention strategies and distribution of support packages to the participants. The result of this activity is that participants gain an understanding of the methods and steps for controlling and preventing stunting among individuals with disabilities, and they are able to create balanced meal patterns or portions to prevent stunting.

Abstract

Athletes with good physical fitness will have optimal performance quality. Fitness is a crucial factor in building an athlete's performance in achieving the expected competencies. One strategy for maintaining physical fitness levels is to consume foods with balanced nutrients, especially energy and macronutrients (Carbohydrates, Protein and Fat). In this study, the relationship between energy and macronutrient intake and the fitness of Pencak Silat, Sepak Takraw and Judo athletes at DKI Jakarta Province will be examined. This research uses a quantitative observational analytical method with a cross-sectional design and is analyzed descriptively analytically to determine the desired relationship. The data normality test used the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, resulting in normally distributed data (p>0.05). The total population in this study was 75 people, 45 men and 30 women. The results of the analysis of Recall and VO2Max data which describe each variable show that there is a significant relationship between energy and macronutrient intake and athlete fitness. Marked with a P value = 0.00 (p value < 0.05). By understanding this relationship, it is hoped that it can help design a diet program that is more effective and suits the athlete's needs based on the type of sport they are involved in, so that the athlete can achieve optimal physical fitness.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence marks the onset of puberty, during which physiological and hormonal changes occur. In female adolescents, one of the primary indicators of puberty is the initiation of menstruation. During the menstrual phase, some adolescents experience lower abdominal pain, known as dysmenorrhea. Various factors, including body fat percentage and nutrient intake, have been identified as contributors to dysmenorrhea. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between body fat percentage, fat intake, and the levels of iron, calcium, and magnesium intake on the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at SMAIT Raflesia Depok in 2024. Methods: The study was conducted in February 2024 at SMAIT Raflesia Depok, utilizing a quantitative, cross-sectional design. The sample comprised 103 female students from grades X and XI, aged 14 to 17 years, selected through stratified random sampling. Study variables included body fat percentage, fat intake, iron intake, calcium intake, magnesium intake, and the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: Analysis revealed a significant association between iron intake (p-value=0.009), calcium intake (p-value=0.006), and magnesium intake (p-value=0.020) with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea. However, no significant association was observed for body fat percentage (p-value=0.349) or fat intake (p-value=0.616). Conclusions: This study highlights a significant association between the intake of iron, calcium, and magnesium and the occurrence of primary dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at SMAIT Raflesia Depok in 2024. These findings underscore the importance of maintaining a healthy body fat percentage and ensuring adequate nutritional intake to reduce the risk of dysmenorrhea in this population.
