Abstract

Critical thinking and writing are considered as one of the twenty-first century skills that must be acquired by students; however, research on this area still needs more empirical paucity of evidence. The present study aims to reveal English students’ learning needs on critical writing course at university level. Drawing on survey research, this study invites 437 undergraduate students majoring in English department from four universities in Surakarta municipality, Indonesia. Statistical analysis identifies key student priorities: acquiring, evaluating, and synthesizing information; effective communication; articulating their opinions; publishing their writings; and presenting materials at international forums. The data also reveal that English students encounter significant challenges in critically analyzing information and drawing conclusions from reading passages. Regarding their expectations for critical writing instruction, students aspire to enhance both their critical thinking and academic writing abilities. This is particularly pertinent for pre-service teachers who will need to teach content and produce both academic and non-academic publications. Additionally, the survey indicates a positive student response to incorporating technology (e.g., social media, networking sites, websites) into collaborative learning activities for critical writing courses. These findings provide valuable insights into the needs and expectations of English students regarding critical writing courses, offering a clear direction for course design and instructional strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs of teachers and students on critical reading skills. This research uses descriptive quantitative research. Data collection tools are questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study were 23 grade VII students and 21 Indonesian language teachers in grade VII SMP who were members of the Subject Teacher Consultative Forum (MGMP), Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta. The results showed that female and male students had the same interest in reading activities, most of the students preferred to learn by discussion. Before reading the text, most of the students tried to guess the reason the author wrote the text, guessed the contents of the text from titles, and make questions to guide. From the teacher's perspective, it was found that the teacher felt that learning to read critically was a difficult task, the teacher needed a reading learning model using discussion. From the interviews, it turned out that the teacher had not taught critical reading skills in class. Critical reading skills are very important and needed by students today. Therefore, the critical reading learning model with discussion is very much needed by teachers and students.

Abstract

Language and culture could not be learned and taught separately. Therefore, a learning material based on culture should be considered for a meaningful instructional process. This study is aimed to develop a culture based textbook for academic purpose using a model of teaching language and culture. This model includes language  knowledge, language  awareness,  culture  awareness,  and  culture  experience. The first step (need assessment) concerning the need to develop a culture based textbook was done in the previous study by Zuchdi and Nurhadi (2019), while the level of students language competence and their cultural interest was done in the beginning of this study. This study was the development of an intercultural based textbook through these following procedures: defining objectives, identifying culture topics, developing materials and media of instruction, content layout and graphic design, internal and external review, try out for product validation, and developing final draft. Based on the survey, the majority of respondents were in level 3 and 4  of  Indonesian  language  competence,  so  this  textbook  was developed for that levels. The respondents were students taking Indonesian language program in Ahmad Dahlan University in Yogyakarta. The data were collected using pretest-postest and instructor’s reflection, and then analyzed by finding out the difference between the scores category. Almost half of the pretest scores were in the low and medium category, while all of the postest scores were in the high category. Based on the the instructor’s reflection, the students were really involving to study using this textbook. It can be concluded that the culture based Indonesian language textbook for academic purpose is effective for teaching and learning Indonesian as a foreign language.

Abstract

Writing explanatory text is a complex skill and requires a deep understanding of the topic, so strategies are needed that can help. This research aims to test the effectiveness of the 3W2H strategy in learning to write explanatory texts in high school. The research design uses quantitative with a quasi-experimental design. The research population was all class XI students at SMAN 1 Mojolaban, totaling 354 students. Samples were taken using cluster random sampling techniques so that 42 students were obtained as the experimental class and 48 students as the control class. Data is collected through performance tests. Research validity uses content validity, namely consulting experts. The collected data was then analyzed using ANOVA and Scheffe's test. The research results showed that the average pre-test and post-test results for writing explanatory text for the experimental group using the 3W2H strategy were 58.48 and 83.14, while for the control group it was 61.92 and 70.3. These results show that the experimental group increased by 42.21%, while the control group increased by 13.53%. Apart from that, the p value is <0.001 or smaller, so it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the posttest results of the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, the Scheffe test results show a p value <0.01 or smaller than 0.05, so the research shows that the 3W2H strategy is more effective than conventional strategies. These results indicate that the 3W2H strategy can be an alternative in writing explanatory text.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role playing model with an ethno-pedagogical approach to early childhood language and reading skills. This study is a meta-analysis study. The inclusion criteria in this study are 1) the research must be relevant; 2) data is obtained from national or international journals indexed by SINTA or Scopus; 3) the study was published in the 2022-2024 time frame; and 4) the study must report complete data to calculate the effect size value. Analyze data with the help of JASP and Microsoft Excel applications. The results concluded that the 19 studies analyzed showed that the ethno-pedagogy-based role playing model had a significant influence on early childhood language and reading skills with a score of (g= 0.895; 95% CI 0.706-1.084; P < 0.001) high effect size category.  These findings explain that the ethno-pedagogical role playing model effectively improves early childhood language and writing skills in the learning process.
