Abstract

The limited physics laboratory facilities and infrastructure in high schools remains a major obstacle to meaningful physics learning. Trimurti High School is one of the schools that does not yet have a physics laboratory, so the learning process tends to be conducted through lectures and minimal practical activities. This community service activity aims to provide a practical-based learning experience through an open physics laboratory program involving lecturers and students. The practicals implemented include the formation of images on convex and concave lenses, the use of a simple microscope, and experiments with straight-line motion. The community service method is carried out through the stages of planning, implementation of the practical, and evaluation of the activity. The results of the activity showed a very enthusiastic response from teachers and students, increased learning motivation, and a better understanding of physics concepts through direct experience. This open laboratory activity is expected to be an alternative solution for schools with limited laboratory facilities and encourage the implementation of more contextual and active physics learning.

Abstract

The students' understanding of temperature, heat, and thermal equilibrium remains inadequate, necessitating an educational strategy to enhance their scientific understanding. This study seeks to enhance students' understanding of concepts by employing guided inquiry learning in conjunction with formative assessment on thermal material. The research employed a mixed methods strategy, utilizing quantitative data from concept understanding exams and qualitative data from interviews. Quantitative analysis encompassed descriptive statistics, normalized gain (N-Gain) computations, and independent samples t-tests, and qualitative data was examined through content analysis methodologies. The study's results indicated a significantly greater enhancement in conceptual understanding in the experimental group relative to the control group. The N-Gain value for the experimental group was 0.69 (moderate category), but the control group attained just 0.25 (low category). The data satisfy the statistical requirements, specifically normal distribution (Sig > 0.05) and homogeneity (Sig = 0.406). The t-test results indicated a significant difference between the two courses (t = 73.761; p < 0.001), demonstrating that guided inquiry learning with formative evaluation substantially enhances conceptual understanding. This study's theoretical implications suggest that integrating guided inquiry learning with formative assessment can enhance students' conceptual understanding through scientific investigations and ongoing feedback. The finding corroborates the constructivist approach, which underscores the significance of active learning experiences and cognitive interactions in fostering a more precise and comprehensive conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Critical thinking is essential in environmental education, helping students address ecological and sustainability challenges. However, current learning models often lack a structured framework for developing critical thinking in environmental science courses. The advancement of digital technology offers both opportunities and challenges. This research aims to develop critical thinking dimensions for environmental science courses using a project-based learning (PjBL) approach, integrated with digital technology (AI-assisted data analysis, GIS for mapping, and cloud-based tools for collaboration). The Delphi method was used to create critical thinking indicators, involving 15 experts from various fields. Data was collected via interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and a Likert scale-based validation questionnaire. Results show that the developed dimensions Inference, Clarifying and Interpretation, Analyze and Evaluate Arguments, and Explanation met validity and reliability criteria through Rasch analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Technology integration in PjBL enhances data-driven analysis and predictive modeling but may reduce critical reflection due to AI reliance. A hybrid learning approach is recommended to balance hands-on interaction with technology use. This study contributes to designing more effective strategies for improving students' critical thinking skills in environmental education

Abstract

This study aims to improve the understanding of the concept of the elements of plane figures in grade III students of Tanjungrejo 5 Public Elementary School through the application of an open-ended approach. The main problem found in the pre-action was the low ability of students to understand geometric concepts due to reliance on memorization and one definite answer. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was carried out in two cycles using the Kemmis & McTaggart model which includes the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The learning steps applied included open problem orientation, problem presentation, independent or group problem solving, and discussion of the results of the solution. The results showed a significant increase in conceptual understanding gradually. Students' classical mastery in the pre-action only reached 3.70% with a very poor category. After the action was carried out in cycle I, the mastery rate increased to 64.28%. In cycle II, classical mastery jumped to 92.80% and was included in the excellent category. This increase is supported by the theory of constructivism and the theory of cognitive flexibility which emphasize that knowledge is actively constructed by students through problems that challenge creativity. This approach has proven effective in making students more creative and able to solve mathematical problems with more than one solution.

Abstract

This study aims to improve student’s conceptual understanding of the diversity of landforms in Indonesia through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model supported by animated videos and formative assessment. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles following the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which includes planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The participants were 28 third-grade students of SD Negeri Tanjungrejo 5. Data were collected through observation, documentation, pre-test, and post-test to measure students’ conceptual understanding. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes across each cycle. In the pre-cycle stage, the classical completeness rate was only 17.86%. After implementing the learning model in Cycle I, the percentage increased to 57.17%. Further improvement occurred in Cycle II, where classical completeness reached 85.71%, exceeding the predetermined success indicator. The use of animated videos helped students visualize abstract concepts of landforms, while formative assessment provided feedback on students’ understanding during the learning process. Therefore, the integration of the Problem Based Learning model, animated video media, and formative assessment proved effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding and creating a more active and meaningful learning environment in elementary school.
