Abstract

The coast of Tanjung Mas, Semarang City, is an industrial area used by the community to cultivate milkfish using stick-net pens. Furthermore, heavy metal contamination such as Cr, Cd, Cu, and Pb potentially disrupts milkfish meat's growth, quality, and safety. This study aims to determine heavy metals concentration in the waters and milkfish meat in stick-net pens cultivation in Tanjung Mas, Semarang City. The study was conducted using exploration, with five observation sites representing household waste disposal flow, industrial discharge, open sea, and intermediate areas. The observation sites were selected based on the milkfish cultivation activity. The sample and data, including water, milkfish, and environmental factors (temperature, pH, salinity, water current, and dissolved oxygen), were collected three times every two weeks. The heavy metals were detected using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The highest heavy metal concentration is Cr, which ranges from 1.70 ± 0.32 ppm to 2.36 ± 0.63 ppm in milkfish and 2.77 ± 0.65 ppm to 3.05 ± 0.58 ppm in the environment. The heavy metals contamination in Semarang City’s water areas is still relatively low and has no impact on milkfish growth. Industrial waste, mainly heavy metals, potentially threatens the stick-net pens cultivation model developed by the community in Semarang City. This study can be used as an input for mitigation and adaptive action in anticipating future environmental changes and maintaining their business sustainability.

Abstract

Semarang City has the fastest development in Central Java Province, where the activities are no longer centralized but have expanded to the upper part of the region. The ongoing development certainly impacts changes with the increasing area of built-up land that converts to another cover, such as vegetation. The phenomenon impacts the balance of the environment, one of which is the source of springs. Therefore, this study aims to map the spatial distribution of the springs and identify their physical quality. A quantitative approach was used with spatial analysis. Meanwhile, data collection techniques used document research, high-resolution image interpretation and field surveys. Field surveys were conducted to test the accuracy of land use maps and measurements of discharge, temperature, pH and brightness of the springs. The results showed that there is a change in land use from 2016 - 2021 with an increase in settlements of around 77.25 hectares and commercial service buildings by 178.79 hectares. For land use with the largest decrease in area, agricultural land covers and mixed garden/vegetation covers an area of 207.01 and 50.57 hectares. There were 114 springs at the research site, of which 5% of the springs had a relatively large discharge above 10 liters/second, while the other 47% had a small discharge. For pH conditions, there were 6 springs with a pH value of less than 6. Land use change from vegetation to flying land impacts the reduction of the water supply in the soil. The impact can be seen by the non-production of several springs, where 21 springs have not been discharged. In conclusion, there is a change in land use with an increase in built-up from 2016 - 2021 by 256.04 hectares. The increase in built-up is partly in conservation areas, hence damaging several springs. Abstract

Indonesia’s coastline, particularly Kendal Regency in Central Java, faces critical mangrove degradation due to land-use changes and rising sea levels. This study aims to asses the condition and erosion impacting Kendal's mangrove ecosystems to inform future conservation strategies. Using remote sensing technology, multi-spatial and multi-temporal imagery from 2005–2023 was analyzed and validated with field observations to evaluate mangrove species composition, structure, and land changes. The mangrove area increased by 52% in three locations, with the Bodri River delta (Pidodo Kulon and Pidodo Wetan villages) showing the most significant growth at 76.69 hectares. Ngebum Beach (Mororejo) had the largest proportional increase, reaching 185%. The ecosystems are moderately diverse, containing at least 11 mangrove species, though Rhizophora dominates due to extensive planting efforts. Despite stable conditions, these ecosystems face threats from deforestation for aquaculture, the primary driver of land erosion, compounded by rising sea levels. Although mangrove areas have expanded significantly, ongoing challenges include erosion, anthropogenic pressures, and limited species diversity. Future strategies must involve multi-stakeholder collaboration to implement sustainable practices, promote species diversity, develop erosion mitigation models, and conduct awareness campaigns to ensure the resilience of Kendal’s mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract

Shoreline mapping plays an important role in sustainable coastal management, particularly in strategic areas such as the Kedungsepur Metropolitan Area. This study aims to analyzes shoreline changes and identifies their impact on coastal communities. Shoreline extraction was conducted using remote sensing data from Landsat satellite imagery, while the analysis of shoreline changes was performed using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) within a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. The results reveal that shoreline changes – both erosion and accretion – occurred across Kendal Regency, Semarang City, and Demak Regency. The most severe coastal erosion was identified in Bedono Village (Demak Regency), while the highest accretion occurred in Pidodo Kulon Village (Kendal Regency). When analyzed by watershed units, the highest accretion was found in the Bodri Watershed, one of the priority areas for revitalization. These findings highlight the need for integrated policy approaches that connect coastal and watershed management to ensure long-term sustainability.

Abstract

As a conservation-oriented university, UNNES has carried out various activities that support the preservation of nature and the environment. The increasing development of UNNES has led to an increasing diversity of community activities around it, thus potentially creating environmental impacts due to the increasingly massive land conversion for business, housing and entertainment. This condition indirectly affects the existence of flora and fauna in the UNNES Campus environment. To anticipate this condition, UNNES has undertaken various environmental improvement efforts, one of which is by regularly carrying out planting programs. It is fitting that UNNES has its own nursery in collaboration with the fostered community partners. The Akar Banir Foundation as a partner in community service activities, is a foundation that already has good capabilities in cultivating various types of plants. The objectives of this community service activity are: a) to facilitate a shaded house for a representative rare plant nursery and b) to develop and increase the biodiversity of rare plant seeds that will be developed by Akar Banir. From this community service activity, the following results have been achieved: a shaded house for a rare plant nursery located at Ecofarm UNNES Semarang with an area of 3 x 12 m2 . This shade house provides a facility for developing rare plant seedlings, which is expected to contribute to preserving Indonesia's rare plant germplasm. To date, 21 rare Indonesian plant species have been developed, and the hope is that this will continue to grow.
