The aims of this study are to analyze the types of maxims that are flouted by the characters and to describe why the characters flout the maxim. This study is entitled “The Types of Flouting Maxims Found in the Onward Movie”. The study focuses on the flouting maxims in Onward movie. This study focused on the theory of Grice (1975) in analyzing the type of flouting maxims and a theory from Leech (1983) in analyzing the reason behind the maxim that was flouted by the characters in Onward movie. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and use both formal and informal methods. The result of the study showed that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 16 data. The dominant flouting maxim uttered by the characters in this movie is the flouting maxim of relevance with the frequency of 7 (40%).

The aim of this study is to find out the types of figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love. The data were analyzed by using the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Rreninger (1963). In analyzing the data, this study uses observation method in collecting the data and descriptive method uses in analyzing the data. The result of this study showed that six types of figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love, that there were 22 data the figure of speech used in the song lyric of John Legend album Bigger Love, those are 8 simile, 2 metaphor, 3 personification, 1 synecdoche, 6 hyperbole, 1 paradox.

This study analyzes a strong desire to become other Gender of Dean’s Portrayal in the novel Between Perfect and Real. The data was taken from a novel entitled Between Perfect and Real, which is monologue and dialog. This study analyzes the strong desire to be of the other gender of the main character named “Dean Foster.” The study uses the descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data. The result of the study is presented in a formal and informal method. The library research method is used as the technique for collecting data. This study uses two main theories to analyze the data. The first leading theory is a diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders proposed by the American Psychiatric Association (2013) used to find out the strong desire to be of the other gender of Dean’s. The second leading theory is the Method of Characterization proposed by Kenny (1966), used to analyze how the writer presented the strong desire to become other gender Dean in Between Perfect and Real novel. This study obtained 18 data relating to the strong desire to be of the other gender experienced by Dean.

This study aims at identifying the variety kinds of lexical1 hedges1 employed in the movie script and to determine their purpose. The data for this study were gathered from the 2018 film "Too All the Boys I've Loved Before" using note-taking and documenting techniques. The original version of the film was produced, directed, and written by Susan Johnsons and Sofia Alvarez. Using Lakoff's theory regarding the characteristics of women's language, the data were analysed descriptively. Four lexical1 hedge examples were found in the “Too All the Boys I've Loved Before” movie, according to this analysis. It was discovered that lexical11hedges1 used in the movie are the words “well”, “you know”, “uh”, and “I thought”.

ABSTRACT This study aims to analysed the women's language features and the functions of women's language features found in the Vlog by Emma Chamberlain. The data were taken from the Vlog by Emma Chamberlain on YouTube. This study was analysed by applying the theory by Lakoff (1975) and the theory by Pearson (1985). Based on the phenomenon, women tend to talk in the media or digital communication. The trend of digital communication is called Vlog or video blogging. In total there are 8 data found in the Vlog from 6 videos. It can be concluded that, there were only Lexical Hedges, intensifiers, and hypercorrect grammars, tag question, rising intonation and declaratives, super polite form, Avoidance of strong swear, and emphatic stress were found in Emma Chamberlain’s Vlog. The functions, it was only found 3 functions from 5 function of women language features proposed by Pearson (1985). These functions are to start discussion, to get response, and to express feeling. The result, It can be concluded that to express feeling is the most commonly found. While, to get responds and to start discussion are the least found.

ABSTRAKPengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris kepada masyarakat seiring dengan begitu pesatnya perkembangan pariwisata di desa Canggu. Permasalah prioritas yang dialami masyarakat desa Canggu yaitu kesulitan masyarakat dalam berkomunikasi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dengan wisatawan asing. Hal ini melatar belakangi diadakannya kegiatan pengabdian berupa pelatihan bahasa Inggris komunikatif bagi masyarakat Canggu terutama yang bekerja pada jasa pelayanan pariwisata. Pelatihan ini menitikberatkan pada kemampuan speaking dan listening dengan tujuan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan asing. Pengukuran kemampuan kelompok sasaran ini dilakukan melalui pre-test sebelum pelatihan. Tingkat keberhasilan pelatihan diukur kembali dengan post – test yaitu test praktek langsung dengan tamu asing yang sedang menginap di villa. Test ini menilai susunan kalimat yang diucapkan, penggunaan kata yang tepat dan pengucapan. Hasil yang didapatkan diakhir kegiatan pengabdian adalah peningkatan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang signifikan dari peserta pelatihan dalam berkomunikasi Bahasa Inggris.Kata Kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Canggu, Villa.

This study aimed to identify if visitors to Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park used positive politeness strategies. The theory of Brown and Levinson (1987) regarding the various politeness techniques was employed in this study as the basis for a descriptive qualitative method to depict the data. According to theory, only six of the six sub-strategies in positive politeness were used by the visitor when giving a review: (1) Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with H), (2) Intensify Interest to H, (3) Seek Agreement, (4) Offer Promise, (5) Give or Ask Reason, and (6) Give Gifts to H Goods, Sympathy, Understanding, and Cooperation. As a result, the visitor employs a gracious approach to express their feelings while visiting Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.

AbstrakArtikel ini membahas tentang manajemen konflik yang digunakan dalam menyelesaikan konflik karakter utama dalam film Suffragette. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis konflik yang dihadapi oleh karakter utama dan untuk menganalisis bagaimana karakter utama menyelesaikan konflik dalam film Suffragette. Sumber data diambil dari film berjudul Suffragette. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui beberapa langkah, seperti menonton film secara berulang-ulang, kemudian mencatat poin-poinnya dan terakhir memilih data yang berhubungan dengan masalah. Konflik dalam penelitian ini dianalisis berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Kenney (1966) dan cara tokoh utama menyelesaikan konflik dianalisis berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Thomas dan Kilmann (1970). Berdasarkan hasil analisis, dapat digambarkan bahwa jenis konflik yang dihadapi oleh tokoh utama ditemukan sebagai konflik eksternal dan dikategorikan dalam dua aspek, yaitu manusia melawan manusia dan manusia melawan masyarakat. Konflik eksternal yang dihadapi tokoh utama meliputi lingkungan keluarga dan lingkungan tempat kerja. Dalam menyelesaikan konflik tokoh utama menggunakan manajemen konflik seperti strategi kompetitif dan kolaboratif.Kata kunci: Konflik Eksternal, Managemen Konflik, Film.AbstractThis article discusses the conflict management used in resolving the conflict of the main character in Suffragette movie. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of conflict faced by the main character and to analyse how the main character solves the conflict in the Suffragette movie. The source of data was taken from a movie entitled Suffragette. The data was analysed by using a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected through several steps, such as watching the movie repeatedly, then note the points and last, choosing the data that deals with the problem. The conflict in this study was analysed based on the theory proposed by Kenney (1966) and the way the main character solves the conflict was analysed based on the theory proposed by Thomas and Kilmann (1970). Based on the results of the analysis, it can be described that the types of conflict faced by the main character found as external conflict and it category in two aspects, namely man against man and man against society. The external conflict that is faced by the main character includes the family environment and the working environment. In resolves the conflict the main character uses conflict management such as competitive and collaborative strategy.Keywords: External Conflict, Conflict Management, Movie.

This study aims to describe the meaning of the directive illocutionary speech acts used by Native Speakers and Non-Native Speakers in teaching English at the Denpasar Children Center School. The data sources of this study are the utterance of native speaker and non-native speaker. Data obtained by using observation method with uninvolved conversation observation technique and record techniques. Data containing illocutionary speech acts then analyzed descriptively qualitatively based on theories of speech act proposed by Searle (1969) and Leech (1974) about meaning. The results showed that the directive speech acts used by native speakers and non-native speakers were requirements, requestives, questions, prohibitive, permissives and advisories. The meanings of directive speech acts spoken by native speakers and non-native speakers are analyzed from the context of the conversation. The meaning of speech acts for the native speaker tends to be connotative and sometimes contains affective meaning. Whereas the meaning of speech acts of non-native speaker tend to use a combination of connotative, denotative, and affective meanings.

ABSTRACT The title of this article is “Linguistic Varieties in Economic and other Registers”. This article tries to analyze ad discuss about the meaning of words varieties used in register of Economics that can be also used in other registers. Many words in register of economics has specific meaning, which are only used in economics section, but in other side, those word can be also used on other context of situation. The words of economics register were taken from the economics articles or business magazine, in Jakarta Post Newspaper and Bali Advertiser magazine. The analyzing of Language Varieties in Economics Register focuses on the following points of problems: (1) the meaning of words varieties that are used in Registers of Economics. (2) The varieties of words in Register of Economics that can be also used in other Register. In analyzing the language varieties used in register of economics, this research applies the sociolinguistics theory, taken from Peter Trudgill (1974) in this book entitled An Introduction to Language and Society as main theory. The theory is supported by other theories that are considered relevant to the topic of discussion in this article. Based on the result of the research and analysis, it is found that are two kinds of words used in register of economics, they are common words are the word usually used in common situation and specific words are the words used in specific situation. Besides that, the word in register of economics can be used in other registers such as: register of culture, register of politics, register of medical, register of education, register of engineering, and register of government’s affair.
