Abstract

Herbal medicine is growing quite rapidly, especially in every area that has traditional medicine using natural ingredients that are believed to treat disease. In addition, the use of herbal medicines is believed to have fewer side effects compared to conventional medicine. WHO also recommends the use of traditional and herbal medicines in efforts to maintain health, as well as prevent and treat diseases ranging from mild to chronic diseases. Based on the various problems faced, the purpose of implementing community service is to increase public knowledge and understanding of medicinal plants, independent health screening, and self-medication, and the role of supplements (vitamins and herbs) in health care and disease prevention efforts.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by reduced insulin sensitivity and inadequate insulin secretion, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Standard treatment relies on synthetic drugs, which can cause adverse effects in some patients. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, a plant native to Indonesia and widely used in traditional medicine, is being explored as a natural alternative for diabetes management due to its potential antidiabetic properties. This review compiles recent findings on its therapeutic potential. A systematic literature search was conducted in August 2024 in PubMed, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and Google Scholar using the keywords “Rhodomyrtus tomentosa” and “antidiabetic.” Of 774 screened articles, five met the inclusion criteria (2014–2024). The studies employed in vitro, in vivo, and in silico approaches, focusing mainly on fruits and leaves. Results indicate that R. tomentosa may help control blood glucose by inhibiting α-glucosidase and α-amylase, enzymes critical in carbohydrate digestion. Bioactive compounds such as phloroglucinols and meroterpenes were frequently identified. However, most evidence comes from laboratory models, with limited animal research and no clinical trials. The risk of bias was moderate, often due to incomplete reporting. While findings suggest R. tomentosa is a promising natural candidate for diabetes treatment, its therapeutic value remains unconfirmed. More robust in vivo studies and human clinical trials are essential to clarify its mechanisms, safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy. This review serves as a basis for future research and highlights the need for rigorous studies to validate its clinical potential.

Abstract

Klebsiella pneumoniae can cause serious infections. The use of antibiotics is often an option in treating infections, but bacteria can adapt by forming biofilms. Therefore, the search for alternative antibiofilms from natural sources is important. One potential plant is karamunting leaves (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (aiton) hassk). This study aims to describe the potential of the ethanol extract of karamunting leaf as an antibiofilm against Klebsiella pneumoniae. This study is an in vitro descriptive laboratory test. A thick ethanol extract of karamunting leaves was then prepared in three concentration variations: 62.5µg/mL, 125µg/mL, and 250µg/mL. The positive control used was meropenem, and the negative control used was DMSO. The parameter measured for the inhibition and eradication test was biofilm thickness, which was read using a 590nm Microplate reader. In this study, the percentage of inhibition in the three concentrations was 90.65% at a concentration of 250 µg/ml, 86.69% at a concentration of 125µg/ml, and 87.22% at a concentration of 62.5µg/ml. During the eradication test, the percentages obtained were -10.67% at a concentration of 250µg/ml, 3.58% at a concentration of 125µg/ml, and 68.23% at a concentration of 62.5µg/ml. The ethanolic extract of karamunting leaves demonstrates good biofilm inhibitory activity against Klebsiella pneumonia at all tested concentrations. At a concentration of 62.5µg/ml, the extract exhibits good biofilm eradication activity, while at 125µg/ml and in the positive control, it shows poor activity. Interestingly, at a concentration of 250µg/ml, the extract acts as a biofilm promoter, enhancing biofilm formation.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood, which can impair productivity and health, particularly among vulnerable populations such as Islamic boarding school students (santri). Education and the utilization of herbal plants have potential as effective measures for anemia prevention. However, these approaches are underutilized in this population. This study aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of santri regarding anemia prevention, the use of herbal plants, and health screening at the Modern Thawalib Sriwijaya Islamic Boarding School in Palembang, involving 40 participants (67.5% male, 32.5% female). Activities included educational sessions, health screenings, and guidance on herbal plant cultivation. Evaluations were conducted using pretest and posttest assessments. Results demonstrated significant improvements in knowledge (from 30% to 95%), attitudes (from 15% to 65%), and practices (from 47.5% to 82.5%). Hemoglobin screening revealed moderate anemia in 42.5% of participants, mild and severe anemia in 10% each, and no anemia in 37.5% of participants. Educational interventions effectively improved the understanding, attitudes, and behaviors of santri concerning anemia and the preventive potential of herbal plants.

Abstract

Purple sweet potato extract (Ipomoea batatas L.) has hepatoprotective potential due to its antioxidant properties. This study evaluated the effect of purple sweet potato extract (PSPE) on gentamicin-induced hepatotoxicity in male Wistar rats. Thirty rats were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control, and PSPE-treated groups receiving 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight (BW). Hepatotoxicity was induced using gentamicin for seven days, followed by extract administration for fourteen days. Caspase-3 expression was analyzed using immunohistochemistry, while fibrosis was assessed using Masson’s Trichrome staining and METAVIR scoring. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in Caspase-3 expression among groups (p ¡ 0.001). PSPE was associated with reduced Caspase-3 expression and attenuated hepatic fibrosis, with the strongest effect observed at 200 mg/kgBW. Histopathological evaluation showed predominantly METAVIR grade F0 fibrosis at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kgBW. These findings suggest potential hepatoprotective effects of PSPE in this preclinical model of gentamicin-inducedhepatotoxicity.
