Abstract

A wound is a condition where body tissue is damaged as a result of sharp objects, chemicals, animal bites, electric shocks, and so on. Good and correct wound management can prevent wounds from becoming infected. In general, for infected wounds, aminoglycoside antibiotic ointments are used which are effective against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, such as gentamicin. Where the use of gentamicin ointment is still the "Drug of Choice" for infected wounds. However, due to several side effects that can be caused such as allergic reactions that will cause discomfort in patients with hypersensitivity to antibiotics in this group and the possibility of resistance to the use of this type of antibiotic, other alternative therapies have emerged for treating wounds with ingredients that have minimal side effects, one of which is by using traditional medicine from nature. One of the herbal medicines that is believed to be able to treat skin wounds is the Gotu Kola plant or Centella asiatica. The gotu kola plant or Centella asiatica contains several active substances that are useful in accelerating wound healing, namely Asiatic acid, Madecassocide, and Asiaticoside. This study aims to determine and assess the activity of these substances in Centella asiatica which play a role in the healing process of infected wounds in experimental animals. This research is a review article, by searching data from Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI databases with keywords used such as, "Effectiveness of Centella, Active Ingredients of Centella, Centella on Wounds". Many articles appear, but those used in this article that fit the inclusion criteria are 6 articles. The results of the 6 articles stated that Centella asiatica has the potential to heal infected wounds because it contains triterpenoid compounds which have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia colli. This review article concludes that the active substances found in pegagan leaves, namely Asiatic acid, Madecassocide, and Asiaticoside, have benefits in healing infected wounds in experimental animals.

Abstract

Exposure to free radicals can cause hepatotoxicity in liver cells. Hepatoprotectors are needed to prevent free radicals. The flavonoid group anthocyanin compounds, which give many plants purple, blue, and red colors, have antioxidant activity as hepatoprotectors. This study uses a systematic literature review to review the effectiveness of various plants containing anthocyanins as hepatoprotectors. Articles were searched using Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI with keywords such as "Anthocyanin compounds and Hepatoprotective effects" that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results obtained from 7 review articles show that several plants contain anthocyanins, such as bilberry and blackberry, Rosella, purple cabbage, butterfly pea flower, Aronia melanocarpa Elliot (AMA), red cabbage, and radish. The mechanisms in plants containing anthocyanins as hepatoprotective include antioxidant activity, inhibition of cytochrome enzymes, inhibition of inflammation, protein expression, and modulation of the apoptotic signal pathway. This review concludes that plants containing anthocyanins are effective as natural hepatoprotectors with various mechanisms.

Abstract

For several years, COVID-19 has been a major problem in human health and also caused a global socio-economic crisis. However, the impact of viral load on patient mortality has not been thoroughly investigated. This study analyzes the association between CT value and the mortality of COVID-19 patients in inpatients at Mohammad Hoesin Hospital. This study used observational analysis with a longitudinal retrospective design. This study had 280 subjects. Fifty-four of the 280 patients died (19.3%) 33% had a CT <22.93; 16.7% had a CT 22.93-29.93; 31.5% had a CT 29.94-34.9, 18.5% had a CT >35 with p-value >0.05 for patient mortality. Analysis of age, comorbidities, and clinical severity of patient mortality showed a p-value <0.05. Meanwhile, gender analysis of patient mortality showed a p-value >0.05. These results indicate that the CT value cannot predict patient mortality. Patients with older age, comorbidities, and admission with severe clinical severity have a higher risk of death.

Abstract

Indonesian Health Survey reported that more than half of the population in South Sumatera utilizes herbal medicine to alleviate disease symptoms. The survey also indicated that factors such as lower-middle income levels and the female gender are relatively more likely to utilize medicinal plants compared to higher-income levels and the male gender. The findings from this health survey strongly support the characteristics of the target audience for this community service, specifically the residents of Karya Baru Village represented by the women in Majelis Taklim Al-Kahfi. Initial interviews with several members of this group revealed a tendency to self-treat sick family members, particularly using herbal remedies, as they are perceived to have no side effects compared to modern medications (synthetic drugs). These findings indicate a potential irrational use of herbal medicine in self-medication practices. Self-medication refers to the efforts made by individuals to determine treatments for their disease symptoms. For self-medication practices to be safe and effective, it is essential for the community to be equipped with adequate knowledge about the rational use of herbal medicines. Therefore, a community service initiative is necessary to enhance public knowledge regarding the types of herbal medicines and promote rational behaviors on self-medication practice of herbal medicines within the community.

Abstract

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin—the most potent anti-TB drugs. Prolonged treatment duration and complex drug regimens often lead to poor adherence, contributing to high MDR TB incidence and low treatment success rates, particularly in Indonesia. This study analyzed drug utilization patterns in 52 MDR TB patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang, using total sampling based on medical records from October 2018 to December 2019. Data were analyzed descriptively with SPSS v25. The most common side effects reported were weakness, nausea, and vomiting (84.6%), followed by arthralgia, hyperuricemia, and hearing loss (42.3%). Severe side effects were more prevalent in the short-term regimen group (40.4%) compared to the long-term group (7.7%). Weakness, nausea, and vomiting were the most frequently observed side effects in MDR TB patients.

Abstract

Breast cancer poses a significant global threat to women's health, yet awareness and practice of its most accessible early detection method—Breast Self-Examination (BSE)—remain low among adolescent girls, especially high school students. This study aims to examine the impact of health education using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method on BSE behavior among 11th-grade female students at SMAN 14 Makassar in 2023. A pre-experimental research design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. A total of 51 female students were selected through probability sampling. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire assessing both knowledge and attitudes toward BSE. The Wilcoxon test revealed a significant increase in knowledge following the intervention (p = 0.001), indicating a meaningful difference between pretest and posttest scores. In contrast, although there was an increase in attitude scores post-intervention, the result was not statistically significant (p = 0.239). These findings suggest that while the health education intervention effectively improved knowledge about BSE, its influence on attitude change was not statistically confirmed. Nevertheless, the upward trend in attitude scores implies potential for long-term impact. In conclusion, health education through FGD proved to be effective in enhancing students’ knowledge of BSE and may contribute to fostering more positive attitudes over time. This highlights the importance of integrating structured health education programs into school curricula to promote early breast cancer prevention among adolescents.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by increased blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). This study aims to analyze the relationship between social support and nurse support with self-care behavior in diabetes mellitus patients in the working area of Samata Community Health Center, Gowa Regency. This research employs a quantitative approach with an analytical observational design using a cross-sectional study. The sample was selected using a non-probability sampling method with a purposive sampling approach, resulting in a total of 66 respondents. Data collection instruments included questionnaires for social support, nurse support, and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDCA) for self-care behavior. The results showed that 89 percent of respondents received social support, 80 percent received nurse support, and 76% demonstrated self-care behavior. Statistical analysis using the Chi-square test, specifically the Continuity Correction test, yielded a p-value of 0.009 (p-value < α = 0.05). The findings indicate a significant relationship between social support and self-care behavior among diabetes mellitus patients in the working area of Samata Community Health Center, Gowa Regency. Additionally, nurse support was found to be significantly associated with self-care behavior, as nurses play a crucial role as educators by providing accurate information to diabetes mellitus patients. Future research is encouraged to explore other variables to expand the reference framework.

Abstract

Oxidative stress is an imbalance in the quantity of reactive species and antioxidant activity that is often associated with inflammatory diseases. Inflammation is the main cause of morbidity in most of the world's population. Inflammation occurs when there is an invasion of foreign bodies and pathogenic agents such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses that cause activation of the immune system. The protective effect of the inflammatory process is actually very good under normal circumstances. However, in chronic inflammation, tissue damage becomes uncontrollable and can lead to various diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis and neoplastic transformation. For inflammatory therapy, steroids and non-steroidal drugs (NSAIDs) are usually used, but the use of these drugs can have serious long-term effects. Therefore, the development of anti-inflammatory agents from natural sources such as certain plant species that are safe, efficacious, biocompatible and cost-effective is a rational strategy that can be used to treat inflammatory diseases. One of its species, Guazuma ulmifolia or Dutch teak plant, is widely used in traditional medicine because it contains bioactive compounds, especially proanthocyanidins and flavonoids which have anti-oxidant and anti- microbial properties. The leaves and flowers of Guazuma ulmifolia can be used in fever, gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease and diabetes. Guazuma ulmifolia can protect the gastric mucosa against the harmful effects of NSAIDs through anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant mechanisms. The extract of Dutch teak leaves (Guazuma ulmifolia) was also effective in reducing the expression of myeloperoxidase in the pulmonary tissue of Wistar white rats with pulmonary contusions .
