Abstract

Roads are land transportation infrastructure that includes all parts including complementary buildings for traffic purposes, located on the surface or underground and above water surface, except railways, lorry roads, and cable roads. Jalan Pemuda Ngabang is a district road with 1.3 kilometers long and 6-meter wide traffic lanes. The Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI) 2023 method was employed in this study to analyze the performance of the road section. The analysis condition is divided into under existing conditions and a five-year projection period. The result of PKJI 2023 is the Degree of Saturation (DJ). Road geometric data, traffic volume, vehicle speed, and side obstacles are collected to be the primary data. Secondary data consists of the number of vehicles, population, and map of the study location. Secondary data was obtained by field survey conducted three days from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Study location is analyzed into 2 segment. The results show that the degree saturation on existing condition is 0.61 for segment 1 and 0.50 for segment 2 with each level of service C. 5-year projection period analysis was carried out to evaluate the road performance for 5-year forward. Analysis generate that the degree of saturation for each segments was 1.15 and 0.94 with level of service F and E. Because the value exceeded the scope limit of 0.85, some improvements were suggested to get better performance. After road improvements, the degree saturation decreased to be 0.84 from 1.15 and 0.69 from 0.94.

Abstract

The Sukadana-Teluk Batang road section supports community mobility and economic activities in Kayong Utara Regency. However, the road suffers significant damage due to excessive vehicle loads, poor drainage, environmental influences, and insufficient maintenance. This study analyzes road conditions using the Bina Marga method, which categorizes and evaluates damage types like cracks, potholes, and rutting to determine severity and prioritize maintenance. The results indicate that 30.69% of the road area is damaged, with critical segments such as STA 31+200 and STA 32+000 requiring immediate improvement. Segments with moderate damage are allocated for periodic maintenance, while minimal defects are addressed through routine maintenance. The study also integrates visual tools like graphs and maps to highlight damage distribution and facilitate decision-making. By emphasizing a data-driven approach, this research provides practical solutions for optimizing maintenance resources, extending road lifespan, and supporting sustainable regional development. The findings contribute to civil engineering practices and serve as a reference for managing infrastructure in similar regions.

Abstract

Bentonite is a term used in the trade industry to refer to clays that contain montmorillonite and belong to the dioctahedral group. Bentonite possesses unique properties, such as expanding when mixed with water. This property of bentonite is expected to enhance the performance of asphalt mixtures, particularly in the Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course (AC-BC). This research aims to analyze the Marshall characteristics, calculate the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) values, assess the layer performance, and determine the optimal percentage of substitution content in the Asphalt Concrete-Binder Course (AC-BC) layer. The research was conducted in several stages. The first stage involved testing the characteristics of the materials. In the second stage, test specimens were prepared with different known asphalt content variations. The third stage involved performing Marshall tests. The fourth stage analyzed the Marshall characteristics using the Bina Marga 2018 Revision 2 method. In the fifth stage, the OAC values were calculated for each variation of the asphalt mixture. The sixth and final stage involved drawing conclusions based on the previous stages. The Marshall test results for the Marshall characteristics determined the OAC for each variation: 6.20%, 6.25%, 6.10%, and 5.95%. Using bentonite in asphalt mixtures can improve stability across different bentonite content variations. With each addition of bentonite, the Voids in Mineral Aggregate (VIM) value is affected, as the VIM value decreases with increased bentonite usage. This suggests that bentonite fills the voids in the asphalt mixture. A lower VIM value indicates a more rigid asphalt mixture with each addition of bentonite and asphalt content. Keywords:  Bentonite in asphalt mixtures, Swelling properties of bentonite, Marshall characteristics in AC-BC, Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) value, Bentonite substitution in pavement layers.

Abstract

The rapid economic growth in major Indonesian cities has led to increased movement of people and goods, particularly in commercial centers, office districts, schools, places of worship, and other urban areas. To accommodate pedestrians while ensuring smooth traffic flow, the government is responsible for providing adequate sidewalk infrastructure. However, in practice, sidewalks often fail to function as intended. In response, the Pontianak City Government plans to expand and enhance sidewalk networks to create a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment. This study applies the Guttman Scale method in accordance with Regulation of the Minister of Public Works No. 03/PRT/M/2014 and Guideline 07/P/BM/2023 to assess sidewalk conditions. Additionally, pedestrian satisfaction is evaluated through interviews using the Likert Scale method. The assessment of existing sidewalk conditions, based on technical guidelines, produced the following results: safety (56.25%), comfort (100%), accessibility (37.50%), aesthetics (87.50%), connectivity (33.33%), and supporting facilities (15%). Meanwhile, pedestrian satisfaction ratings were accessibility (82.83%), climate and natural resilience (85.56%), air quality/odor (86.67%), cleanliness (69.44%), aesthetics (80.83%), safety (81.67%), supporting facilities (76.43%), and obstacles (71.67%). These findings highlight key areas for improvement and underscore the need for comprehensive urban planning strategies to enhance pedestrian infrastructure and overall sidewalk usability in Pontianak.

Abstract

The four-way intersections at Kapuas Bridge II, Jalan Mayor Alianyang "“ Adisucipto (Intersection I), and Jalan Mayor Alianyang "“ Kapur Village (Intersection II) are connected by Kapuas Bridge II. According to the 2023 Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI), congestion at these two adjacent intersections can affect each other, necessitating coordinated solutions. The PKJI 2023 approach evaluates intersection performance, focusing on the Degree of Saturation and Delays. For optimal performance, intersections must meet minimum service levels. Intersections I and II have saturation levels of 1.08 and 1.15, respectively, and delays of 217 and 273 seconds, with a service level F, indicating delays exceeding 60 seconds. To meet PKJI standards, saturation should be below 0.85, which is not the case here. Improvements include widening approaches and optimizing green and cycle times. The first phase involves widening the north and south approaches to 8 meters and the east and west approaches to 7.5 meters, reducing the cycle time from 160 to 120 seconds. The final phase widens all approaches to 20 meters and sets the cycle time to 90 seconds. Keywords: APILL Intersection, Degree of Saturation, Delay, Service Level, Coordination of Intersection, Cycle Time

Abstract

Abstract

Styrofoam, a polystyrene-based plastic widely used in packaging, poses serious environmental challenges due to its non-biodegradable nature. Its use as an additive in asphalt mixtures provides dual benefits: reducing plastic waste and improving pavement performance. This study evaluates the effects of styrofoam addition and variations in compaction temperature on the Marshall characteristics of Asphalt Concrete"“Binder Course (AC"“BC). The research included testing the physical properties of aggregates and asphalt, determining the optimum asphalt content (OAC) using the Barchart method in accordance with Bina Marga Specifications 2018, Revision II, and preparing mixtures with styrofoam contents of 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9%. Samples were compacted at 110 °C, 125 °C, and 140 °C, then tested using the Marshall method to analyze stability, flow, and void-related parameters. Results showed an OAC of 5,6%. Higher styrofoam content and compaction temperature generally improved mixture stability. The highest stability value, 1.152,2 kg, was achieved at a 9% styrofoam content and a compaction temperature of 140 °C. These findings indicate that styrofoam enhances structural strength by filling voids without significantly reducing flexibility. Therefore, styrofoam has strong potential as an eco-friendly additive to improve asphalt performance while helping reduce plastic waste.

Abstract

Increased traffic activity can result in congestion, delays, or accidents at unsignalized intersections. This study assesses the performance of the three-arm unsignalized intersection at Jl. Gusti Situt Mahmud-Parit Pangeran, Pontianak, under current conditions and a 5-year forecast. The analysis employs the Pedoman Kapasitas Jalan Indonesia (PKJI) 2023 and VISSIM software, with data gathered during peak hours on Mondays from 17:00 to 18:00. In the present scenario, PKJI 2023 indicates a degree of saturation (DJ) of 0.95, a delay of 17.08 seconds, and a Level of Service (LOS) C, while VISSIM shows a delay of 21.10 seconds and LOS C. For the 5-year forecast, PKJI 2023 predicts a DJ of 1.07, a delay of 22.76 seconds, and LOS C, whereas VISSIM anticipates a delay of 21.10 seconds and LOS D. The most effective solution to enhance intersection performance includes widening significant roads, adding lanes, and incorporating medians, which would achieve an LOS A, thereby effectively mitigating congestion and delays for both current and projected conditions.
