Abstract

Reading is an important skill to be acquired in second language learning. The significance of teaching reading is aimed at educating students to face life. However, the existence of national examination as a measurement standard brings some effects towards teachers’ beliefs in teaching reading. Moreover, it is taken as students’ final evaluation to pass the school by 40% percentage from NE and 60% from school. The soul of teaching reading to get students’ comprehension of texts can be damaged since people are thinking more pragmatic. Teachers tend to change their way in teaching reading when the national examination day is closer. This research will be conducted descriptively, using questionnaire and interview as the research instruments. In order to face the newest curriculum in Indonesia, NE is pondered as good to be held as the measurement of education in Indonesia, but the side effects in teaching reading should be taken as consideration. This paper also aims at finding out solution for betterment of education.

Abstract

Abstract Translation is a process of transfering source text into the target text viewed from the equivalent of meaning, with equvalencies, the message in the translation text will be the same as the target text. Hence, translating is not just the process of tranfering text from the source language into the target language. However, instead of ideas, translation enters compilation, he processes a translation product. The use of appropriate translation techniques also affects the quality of the translation results. This study aims to describe the ideology of translation in Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study are qualitative based on types of words, phrases and sentences containing translation techniques and ideology taken from the translated novel of Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. Based on the analysis of translation techniques and the ideology of translation used in the text, the ideology used in the translation text is foreignization. Based on the analysis, the results of the study show that of the 18 translation techniques, 12 translation techniques were found consisting of; Literal translation (53%), Amplification (11%), Variation (8%), Particularization (6%), Borrowing (6%), Transposition (5%), Reduction (4%), Calque (2%), Compensation (2%). Meanwhile Description, Linguistic Compression, and Established Equivalent occur only in (1%). The result of the study shows that the most dominant technique used in Indonesian version of Agatha Christie’s endless night novel is Literal translation with 82 occurrences frequency or 53%.

Abstract

This research scrutinizes the strategy of politeness employed by Mentors (MTRs) and Mentees (MNTs) during the coaching clinic providing Master Ceremony (MC) at Universitas Bumigora. Researchers implemented some techniques (participative observation, interviews, audio recording, case studies, and focus group discussions) to monitor the interaction among the MTRs and MNTs during interaction and comprehend how the theory used, and the strategies affect the communication and lead to effectiveness of rehearsals. This research applied a descriptive qualitative method to see the natural phenomenon of data in the field. The face-saving strategy was found to be mostly applied during coaching; MTRs do 69.23% of the time, and MNTs do 80%. While the face-threatening acts, MTRs uttered 30.77%, and 20% of utterances were uttered by MNTs. Using saving strategies during coaching helps the MTRs maintain good relationships with the MNTs. This research also suggests that implementing politeness strategies creates good communication and relationships at hand. The newness of current research lies in the in-depth analysis of the politeness strategy among mentors and mentees, which the face-saving strategy significantly contributes toward communication effectiveness.

Abstract

In the evolving landscape of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education, integrating computational thinking (CT) offers a systematic approach to addressing the cognitive and analytical challenges posed by technical texts. This study investigates the impact of CT strategies—decomposition, pattern recognition, and abstraction—on enhancing ESP learners’ reading comprehension and problem-solving skills. A classroom action research (CAR) framework was employed with second-semester management and engineering students at Universitas Bumigora. A mixed-methods approach combined pre- and post-tests, classroom observations, and reflective journals to measure outcomes and capture qualitative insights. The results revealed significant improvements, with reading comprehension scores rising from 59% to 79% and problem-solving scores increasing from 59% to 80.1%. Large effect sizes (Cohen’s d > 1.1) underscored the efficacy of CT strategies. Qualitative findings highlighted increased student confidence, effective use of decomposition and pattern recognition, and the transferability of skills to other contexts. However, challenges with abstraction persisted, indicating a need for additional scaffolding and instructional support. These findings demonstrate the potential of CT to bridge linguistic and analytical gaps in ESP education. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts and expand the application of CT across diverse ESP fields and teaching methodologies.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of digital media in Content-based Language Teaching (CBLT) to improve reading comprehension in contexts involving English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, the study was conducted over two cycles involving 79 undergraduate students from the Management Study Program at Universitas Bumigora. Digital media—including a Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS), WhatsApp group discussions, and AI-generated video content–were implemented to support student engagement and content understanding. Quantitative data from pre- and post-tests revealed a significant improvement, with a mean score increase of 34.35 points (p < .001). Qualitative data from classroom observations indicated enhanced learner autonomy, increased peer collaboration, and better task engagement, particularly in the second cycle. The findings suggest that integrating digital platforms into ESP instruction improves comprehension and fosters student-centered learning environments. This study supports previous research on the pedagogical potential of digital media in language education and provides a practical model for embedding technology in higher education language classrooms.

This competition is held annually for Health Polytechnic all over Indonesia. This coaching clinic is programmed into two approaches; assisting and coaching. Preceding the programs, a pre-test was given to measure students' competence, and a post-test was given to decide the selected team for NHPEO. This coaching clinic is followed by selected students of Poltekkes Kemenkes Mataram. The activities are programmed for three months and conducted through the collaboration of Universitas Bumigora, Poltekkes Kemenkes Mataram, and TESLA Language Institute. The outcome of this coaching clinic was students’ better understanding of technical strategies to construct; speeches, stories, argumentations and writings. Further, students have better confidence during the performance of public speaking.

Abstract

This community engagement initiative by GenBI Universitas Bumigora focused on empowering Kebon Ayu Village, West Lombok, as an innovative and self-reliant tourism destination. Despite its rich cultural and natural assets, the village faced challenges such as limited digital literacy, underdeveloped entrepreneurship, and low community participation in tourism development. Utilizing the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the program emphasized leveraging existing local strengths through participatory methods. Activities included English language training for children, digital marketing workshops for local entrepreneurs, QRIS digital payment education, and community clean-up campaigns. These interventions led to increased community involvement, the emergence of local leaders, and enhanced digital and entrepreneurial skills among residents. The outcomes align with empowerment theory, highlighting that access to resources, skills, and supportive social structures enables communities to achieve collective goals. This case underscores the effectiveness of participatory, asset-based strategies in fostering sustainable rural tourism development and community empowerment.
