Abstract

Mangosteen (Queen of Tropical Fruit) is one of the excellent commodities of Indonesia's flagship fruit export which contributes  to the country's foreign exchange and farmer's income, with the aim of exporting Hong Kong, Taiwan, China. The biggest centers of mangosteen production in Indonesia are West Java, including Tasikmalaya and Purwakarta. Because mangosteen has health benefits, the demand for mangosteen fruit is increasing (50%/year) and this makes it an opportunity to develop mangosteen agribusiness for Indonesian farmers. Many factors influence farmer decisions, especially in the application of cultivation technology, causing national mangosteen production to be unstable and of low quality. This condition causes Indonesian mangosteen to be unable to compete with other countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Latin America. The amount of mangosteen produced by farmers for export purposes is still low. Useful cultivation techniques and technology applications are not yet fully compliant with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), such as the use of superior seeds, dosage methods and times of fertilization, observation and control of pests, and harvest and post-harvest treatment. this is identifying the factors that influence farmers' decision to use technology in mangosteen cultivation. The research method used was a survey of 69 mangosteen farmers selected by simple random sampling and location selected by multistage random sampling. The factor analysis was used Regression  with System Equations Model. The results of the study show that the factors that influence farmers' decision to use mangosteen cultivation technology to increase production and quality of crops are farmers' assets, namely physical assets, non-physical assets and access to farmers' access. Physical assets, namely the number of ownership of trees, rice fields, vehicles, and income outside of farming; Non-physical assets, namely the number of productive age family members, farmers' access assets, namely the length of travel time from the garden to the provincial road.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship occurs in a space with heterogeneous actors, where there are complex relationships between these actors. This research focuses on understanding entrepreneurship and agricultural communities in the context of economic development. Entrepreneurship research is felt to have not paid enough attention to understanding the community as a group of actors who influence the entrepreneurial behavior of an entrepreneur). We believe that entrepreneurship is greatly influenced by the existence of a community consisting of various stakeholders (government, universities and the private sector). An understanding of the entrepreneurial phenomenon can be obtained by understanding individual interactions with existing opportunities and the environment in which the entrepreneur operates. The relationship between farmers as entrepreneurs and the community as a place where farmers cultivate is important. Social capital, values, norms and culture contained in the community can influence entrepreneurship, both positively and vice versa. Likewise, entrepreneurial activities contribute to the life of society as a whole. Community and entrepreneurship are two entities that influence each other, each of which cannot stand alone. The next challenge for us as entrepreneurship researchers is to expand the scope of research to understand entrepreneurship more comprehensively from various points of view.

Abstract

This study aims to explain why informal knowledge is important for sustainable agricultural development, and finally we try to provide input to increase informal knowledge from farmers in agribusiness centers in West Java Province. The selected informants are farmers who are engaged in horticultural business, have connections and contributions to agricultural development in rural areas and have a role in developing knowledge. Information is collected through various methods that involve in-depth interviews as well as in-depth observations. Farmers' informal knowledge has contributed a lot to the development of sustainable and resilient agriculture. Formal institutions need to pay attention to social, ecological and local economic aspects, focusing on farmers' needs, and not on knowledge that is readily generalized to farmers. Agriculture in a dynamic, complex and local specific context demands a more inclusive, participatory, collaborative model and stronger integration between actors. All actors in the field of horticultural agriculture, especially farmers, must be recognized as equal parties both formally and informally. Collaboration of all parties needs to be improved and integrated in the process of developing horticultural agriculture so that it becomes a stronger and more sustainable business.

Abstract

Several regions of mango producer centers in West Java experienced a significant decline in production in 2016, only Indramayu District experienced an increase in mango production; on the contrary, Kuningan Regency experienced the largest decline in production compared to other regions. The production gap in Indramayu and Kuningan districts is allegedly related to differences in farming behavior. The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in the behavior of farmers in mango farming in Indramayu and Kuningan districts. This research was quantitative research. This research method used survey-explanatory methods. Sampling had been taken by multi-stage random sampling technique. with a total of 130 mango farmers. To analyze differences in farmer's behavior in carrying out mango farming in Indramayu and Kuningan districts, a mann Whitney test and chi square test were used. The results of the study show that there were no differences in farmer behavior in terms of plant care, application of fertilization and use of growth regulators. In terms of controlling plant pest organisms (OPT) there were differences in the behavior of farmers in Indramayu and Kuningan Districts, where most farmers in Indramayu Regency were intensive in preventing and overcoming pest attacks, while some farmers in Kuningan Regency have not been intensive in controlling pest attacks. The informants in this study were taken as many as 5 (five) people, namely young farmers aged 19-40 years and experiencing failure in farming during the covid pandemic 19. The results are expected to contribute to the entrepreneurial learning process from a business failure. From the practical side, the results obtained are expected to provide knowledge for an entrepreneur, that learning is something that comes from a reflection process, so that it can help them to take advantage of their experiences to increase their capacity so that they become better after business failure.
