Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading interest of first-grade students at SD through the use of the Literacy Tree media in learning activities. The background of this study is based on the low level of students’ reading interest, which is indicated by a lack of enthusiasm in participating in reading activities, minimal interest in reading materials, and a low frequency of students engaging in independent reading. These conditions highlight the need for innovative and engaging learning media that are appropriate to the characteristics of early-grade elementary school students. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were first-grade students of SD Negeri 61 Banda Aceh. Data were collected through observation sheets, documentation, and reading interest assessment instruments. The Literacy Tree media was used as an attractive visual learning tool designed to display students’ reading outcomes in the form of “literacy leaves” attached to a tree. Each leaf contained simple information such as the book title, short summaries, or students’ impressions after reading. This media aimed to enhance students’ motivation through a visual approach, simple appreciation, and by fostering a sense of pride and confidence in their reading achievements. The results of the study indicate a significant improvement in students’ reading interest in each cycle, as shown by increased participation in reading activities, greater enthusiasm in selecting reading materials, and a higher tendency to engage in independent reading. Therefore, the Literacy Tree media is effective as an alternative learning medium to enhance reading interest among elementary school students.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the existence of gender injustice practices and the strong influence of patriarchal culture in the lives of women, as depicted in the novel Mata Raisa by Abidah El Khalieqy. The novel illustrates how women face discrimination rooted in social norms, cultural values, and family structures that restrict their freedom and mobility. This study aims to describe the forms of gender discrimination, reveal the influence of social norms and patriarchal culture on the lives of female characters, and explain the application of feminist approaches in examining the main character’s resistance to gender injustice. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using reading and note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed using liberal feminist theory to understand the female character’s struggle to achieve equal rights. The findings indicate that gender discrimination includes restricted mobility, negative labeling of women, the neglect of women’s rights, and social pressures that limit women’s autonomy. Social norms demand that women remain obedient, place them in subordinate positions, and maintain societal control over their behavior and life choices. Patriarchal culture reinforces family rules that position men as dominant, require women to submit to male authority, and limit women’s opportunities in education and public spaces. Through the lens of liberal feminism, the study finds that the character Raisa resists these injustices by pursuing education, expressing her opinions, and making decisions about her own life as a form of struggle toward achieving equal rights

Abstract

Short story writing skills are one of the important competencies in Indonesian language learning at the senior high school (SMA) level. However, in reality, many students still experience difficulties in developing ideas, structuring plots, and organizing the elements of a short story in a logical and coherent manner. One of the contributing factors is the limited availability of learning media that can assist students during the pre-writing stage. This study aims to determine the effect of using the XMind application on improving the short story writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 15 Adidarma. The study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research sample consisted of eleventh-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through short story writing tests administered before and after the implementation of the XMind application, with assessment based on short story writing skill indicators, including theme, plot, characterization, setting, language style, and moral message. Data analysis techniques included normality testing and the paired samples t-test. The results showed that the use of the application did not have a significant effect on students’ short story writing skills. The paired samples t-test results indicated a significance value greater than 0.05, meaning that the null hypothesis stating that there is no significant effect was accepted. Therefore, the use of the XMind application has not demonstrated a significant improvement in the short story writing skills of eleventh-grade students at SMAN 15 Adidarma. Thus, the use of the XMind application in short story writing instruction needs to be adjusted to students’ characteristics and combined with appropriate stages and strategies in writing instruction in order to better support the process of idea development and short story organization
