Abstract

This research explores the types of external conflicts and conflict management strategies used by the main character, Joel, in The Last of Us Season 1. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes all nine episodes by observing, identifying, and classifying Joel’s external conflicts based on Kenney (1966) theory man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. society. It also applies the conflict management strategies from Thomas & Kilmann (2012): competing, avoiding, collaborating, accommodating, and compromising. The findings reveal 17 external conflicts, with man vs. man and man vs. nature each accounting for 35%, and man vs. society 30%. In responding to these conflicts, Joel mostly uses the competing strategy (53%) and avoiding strategy (47%). Competing is seen when he takes direct, forceful action, while avoiding appears in situations that are emotionally overwhelming or where he lacks control. This research is significant for media and literary studies because it shows how conflict in a post-apocalyptic narrative shapes character development and reflects human survival instincts. By focusing on one character across a full season, the research offers a detailed look at how external pressures influence behavior and decision-making in extreme conditions. However, the scope is limited to Joel and does not cover internal conflict or perspectives from other characters. Future studies are encouraged to explore more characters, compare seasons, or examine similar themes in different genres to gain broader insights.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of insertional code-mixing in the YouTube podcast conversation between Merry Riana and Cinta Laura, focusing on the forms, functions, and motivations behind its use. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes verbatim transcriptions of the podcast episode “Cantik, Pintar & Sukses, Cinta Laura Merasa Tidak Bahagia Dalam Hidupnya?” (2022), which has a duration of 65 minutes. A total of 15 instances of insertional code-mixing were identified and analyzed using Muysken’s (2000) theoretical framework. The study specifically investigates the insertion of English words and phrases into Indonesian syntactic structures. The findings reveal that Cinta Laura strategically employs code-mixing not merely as a linguistic habit but as a communicative tool. Insertions are used to emphasize ideas, express emotions, and construct her identity as a modern, reflective bilingual speaker. Examples show that English insertions enhance clarity, add philosophical depth, carry prestigious value, and foster emotional intimacy with the audience. In conclusion, Cinta Laura’s use of intra-sentential code-mixing is a dynamic linguistic practice that enriches her communication and shapes her public persona. Her selective use of English terms within Indonesian sentences enables more precise and impactful message delivery. This study underscores the broader significance of code-mixing as a sophisticated strategy for bilingual speakers in digital environments. It highlights how bilingual individuals leverage their linguistic repertoire to navigate complex topics, express vulnerability, and build stronger connections with online audiences.

Abstract

This study analyzes the character development of P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman (2017) using Egri’s (1960) three-dimensional character theory, physiological, sociological, and psychological, and is supported by Kenny’s (1966) narrative coherence framework. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study examines nine selected scenes that represent the beginning, middle, and end of the film. The analysis is conducted in a multimodal manner, integrating verbal elements (dialogue, narration) and visual cues (gestures, posture, costumes, facial expressions). Findings indicate that Barnum’s character transformation is balanced across three aspects: physiological (33.3%), sociological (33.3%), and psychological (33.4%). His physical appearance evolves from a playful child to a confident showman and finally to a humble family man. Sociologically, his pursuit of social status leads to internal conflict and distancing from his original community. Psychologically, Barnum's ambition and insecurity drive his decisions until he eventually finds emotional resolution. The study demonstrates how Egri’s and Kenny’s theories can be integrated to provide a comprehensive understanding of character construction in film. These findings offer theoretical contributions to character and narrative analysis, and practical insights for film studies, media education, and applied linguistics.

Abstract

Aiming to examine how meaning is constructed through visual and textual cues, this research focuses on verbal and non-verbal signs used in selected Liverpool Football Club advertisements posted on Instagram. The objective is to analyze how these elements convey identity, emotion, and cultural resonance in digital football marketing. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data consisting of two Instagram advertisements from Liverpool FC’s official account. These posts were chosen based on their prominent use of both linguistic and visual features. Observational techniques were used to identify key verbal elements (slogans, captions, hashtags) and non-verbal components (color, gesture, facial expressions, and composition). The analytical framework draws upon Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory of the signifier and signified, Roland Barthes’ concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth, and Cerrato’s approach to color symbolism in communication. Findings indicate that non-verbal signs hold a more dominant semiotic function, with color especially Liverpool’s iconic red serving as a core emotional and cultural sign. Gestures and facial expressions further amplify the club’s message of pride, unity, and inclusivity. Verbal signs, although fewer in number, play a complementary role by anchoring meaning and enhancing brand recall. Through the combination of both sign types, the advertisements function as complex semiotic texts that engage audiences on both emotional and cultural levels, reinforcing global fan connection and brand identity.
