Abstract

This study aims to identify the electrolyte properties of various imported fruits through electrolysis experiments. A quantitative approach was used by measuring the presence of gas bubbles formed on electrodes as an indicator of electrolyte strength. Samples included apples, pears, grapes, lemons, mandarins, strawberries, cherries, kiwis, blueberries, and dates. The results showed that all tested fruit extracts exhibited electrolyte properties due to the presence of organic acids (such as citric, malic, and tartaric acids) and minerals that can ionize into free ions. Apples showed the strongest electrolyte activity, followed by pears, grapes, lemons, and mandarins, while cherries, kiwis, blueberries, and dates showed weaker conductivity. Electrolyte strength was influenced by factors such as ion concentration, acid type, and mineral content. These findings suggest that fruit extracts, especially those with higher acidity levels, have the potential to act as natural electrolytes and serve as an alternative source of environmentally friendly electrical energy.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the polarity and electrolyte properties of several types of imported fruit that are increasingly consumed by the Indonesian people after the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used was a laboratory experiment conducted using three types of polar-nonpolar solvents and a simple multimeter-based electrolyte circuit to measure conductivity by testing extracts of ten imported fruits (melon, dragon fruit, strawberry, kiwi, pomegranate, grapes, cherries, lemon peel, blueberries, and dates). The polarity test was carried out using three different solvents (water, vinegar, and cooking oil), while the electrolyte properties were observed with a simple electrical circuit. The results showed that most of the extracts were soluble in water and vinegar, but not in cooking oil, so the majority of the fruit components were polar. Lemon peel and melon peel have semi-polar properties due to their essential oil content. In the electrolyte test, fruits with high acid content (lemon, pomegranate, strawberry) act as strong electrolytes, while fruits with high sugar content (dates, melon) are only classified as weak electrolytes. Other fruits such as grapes, kiwi, and blueberries show moderate electrolyte properties. These findings support basic chemical concepts regarding the relationship between polarity, solubility, and electrical conductivity, and can be utilized in teaching and food technology applications.

Abstract

Fruits are not only valuable as sources of nutrition but also contain electrolytes that can conduct electric current. The presence of electrolytes in fruits is important to understand since they can be utilized as an alternative, eco-friendly source of electrical energy based on simple principles. This knowledge is also relevant for the advancement of science and technology related to the use of natural materials for energy generation. This study aims to investigate the electrical conductivity of nine local fruits: lemon, Pontianak orange, sweet orange, tomato, kuini, mango, banana, lime, and ambarella. The method involved using a multimeter, copper (Cu) electrodes, and carbon (pencil) electrodes inserted directly into the fruits to measure the voltage produced. The results show that each fruit exhibited different electrical conductivity. Kuini and mango produced the highest average voltage of 0.18 V, while lemon showed the lowest average voltage of 0.04 V. Differences are influenced by water content, ions, and fruit tissue structure.

Abstract

Covalent compounds in local fruits exhibit different solubility properties depending on their molecular polarity, with polar compounds generally dissolving in polar solvents and nonpolar compounds being more soluble in nonpolar solvents. This principle is essential since fruits contain various secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds whose distribution is influenced by polarity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combining solubility tests using 70% ethanol, 96% ethanol, cooking oil, and filter paper as a practical approach to differentiate polar and nonpolar compounds in local fruits. The experiment involved ten fruit samples: star fruit, salak, papaya, pineapple, guava, noni, kaffir lime peel, pantain peel, mangosteen peel, and duku peel. The results showed that star fruit, salak, papaya, pineapple, guava, and noni were highly soluble in 70% ethanol, indicating the predominance of polar compounds. In contrast, kaffir lime peel, duku peel, mangosteen peel, and parts of plantain peel demonstrated greater solubility in oil or left residues on filter paper, suggesting the presence of nonpolar or semi-polar compounds. These findings confirm that the proposed combination method is effective for providing an initial overview of compound polarity in local fruits and has potential application as a practical tool in basic chemistry education and preliminary phytochemical analysis.

Abstract

This study is a literature review aimed at analyzing the synthesis, characterization, functions, and potential hazards of three types of complex compounds used in industry, namely Zn(II)-EDTA, Mn(II)-N-ethylisopropyldithiocarbamate, and Lutetium-177(177Lu)-Di-n-butyldithiocarbamate. The research method employed was library research, focusing on reviewing various relevant scientific sources from both national and international journals. The results show that Mn(II)-N-ethylisopropyldithiocarbamate functions as a lubricant additive that enhances viscosity and reduces friction at high temperatures; Zn(II)-EDTA acts as an effective anti-algae agent in industrial cooling water systems due to its strong chelating properties; and 177Lu-Di-n-butyldithiocarbamate serves as a radiotracer in industrial process monitoring owing to its high stability and radiochemical purity. Despite their many advantages, these compounds also pose potential toxic and environmental risks if not properly managed. Therefore, further research is recommended to develop more efficient and environmentally friendly synthesis methods and to ensure their application complies with industrial and radiation safety standards.

Abstract

Zinc (Zn) is one of the most common heavy metal contaminants found in industrial wastewater and solid residues such as slag, electroplating waste, and metal ash. At excessive concentrations, Zn can cause environmental disturbances, including toxicity to aquatic organisms, disruption of microbial activity, and groundwater contamination. Long-term exposure may also lead to bioaccumulation and potential health risks to humans. This article presents a comprehensive literature review that discusses the chemical properties of Zn, its environmental behavior, and the development of recent treatment technologies within the last five years. Several techniques, including adsorption using modified or composite materials, biosorption utilizing microalgae and agricultural biomass, as well as solidification–stabilization with amendment agents such as biochar or iron-sulfide compounds, are evaluated and compared. The literature indicates that no single treatment method is universally effective for all waste types; therefore, hybrid or integrated treatment systems are considered more efficient and sustainable. Based on the reviewed evidence, this study proposes an engineering concept that emphasizes environmental safety, cost-effectiveness, and industrial applicability.

Abstract

This study discussed the use of iron (Fe) complex compounds in the form of chelates such as EDTA, DTPA, EDDHA, and amino chelates to overcome Fe deficiency in plants. Fe deficiency often occurs in soils with high pH or calcareous soils, which can be seen from chlorosis in leaves and decreased productivity. This study was aimed to review the synthesis, stability, agronomic effectiveness, and environmental impact of various types of Fe chelates. The methods used in this study were literature studies, with data sources covering articles from 2016 to 2025, with a particular focus on articles discussing the use of Fe chelates in plants. The findings of this study indicated that Fe-EDTA works well at low to moderate pH levels but is less stable in alkaline soils. Fe-DTPA showed moderate stability up to pH 7, while Fe-EDDHA had high stability even at pH 9, making it more suitable for calcareous soils. More environmentally friendly alternatives such as Fe-amino chelates have been proven to be more easily absorbed, have a positive impact on the environment, and also function as biostimulants. Therefore, further research is recommended to explore the development of environmentally friendly and effective Fe-chelates in alkaline soils to reduce residues from synthetic materials.
