Abstract

Background: An abscess is a skin infection caused by the accumulation of pus, commonly due to Staphylococcus aureus. This condition is more frequently found in patients with diabetes mellitus due to impaired immunity and microcirculation, which slows the wound-healing process. Conventional wound care is often insufficient in controlling exudate and preventing infection, thus requiring modern dressings such as Hydrofiber silver, which effectively absorbs exudate and provides antimicrobial activity to support healing. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Hydrofiber silver and zinc epithelial cream in the management of abscess wounds. The intervention focused on exudate control, infection prevention, periwound protection, and acceleration of granulation and epithelialization processes in patients treated at the Griya Afiat Independent Practice, Makassar City. Method: A case study was conducted on Mr. AH, a 61-year-old male with an abscess wound on the back. Wound assessment and treatment were carried out during two visits, on Monday and Thursday. The procedure included wound cleansing, application of Hydrofiber silver as the primary dressing, and zinc epithelial cream on the periwound area to maintain moisture and prevent irritation. Results: Over two visits, initial improvements were observed. Wound size decreased from 1.3 × 1.6 cm to 1.2 × 1.4 cm. The wound showed subcutaneous depth, a tunnel < 2 cm, 25% slough, 50% granulation tissue, 25% epithelialization, moderate purulent exudate, and surrounding skin with hypopigmentation, mild edema, and induration < 2 cm. The total score was 29, with an estimated healing time of 5–6 weeks. Conclusion: The combination of Hydrofiber silver and zinc epithelial cream effectively contributed to exudate control and periwound protection, although continued care is needed to optimize the healing of abscess wounds.

Abstract

DDI Al-Ihsan Islamic Boarding School offers both academic and non-academic programs (Tahfidz and Kitab). However, female students in the non-academic program have not received any services related to anemia prevention and control, while those in the academic program have received iron–folic acid (IFA) supplementation, but had not received any education on anemia, therefore 18.5% were still found to be anemic. This community engagement activity aimed to enhance students’ knowledge, awareness, and motivation in preventing and managing anemia through interactive education sessions using multimedia tools (PowerPoint and LCD). The activity involved 30 female students from both academic and non-academic programs, delivered through two sessions lasting approximately 100 minutes in total. The results indicated significant improvements in students’ knowledge (13±0.5 to 15.6±2.6; p = 0.002) and awareness (9.2±2.2 to 11.2±1.1; p = 0.000), while motivation showed a slight, non-significant increase (26.2±4.3 to 27.6±4.7; p = 0.182). In conclusion, the educational intervention contributed positively to strengthening students’ capacity in anemia prevention and control. Further evaluation is recommended to assess its effects on dietary practices, supplementation adherence, and anemia prevalence among female students.

Abstract

Nurses must have experience and knowledge in serving patients. One way to prevent potentially fatal errors, such as administering the wrong medication, drawing lousy blood, or medical procedures inappropriate to the patient's condition, is to identify the patient. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses' work motivation and compliance when identifying patients receiving medication. This research was designed observationally and used a cross-sectional approach. At the Faisal Islamic Hospital Makassar, 43 nurses were sampled. Nurse compliance observation sheets and work motivation questionnaires were used. The Chi-Square statistical test was used with a confidence level of ? = 0.05. The results showed that, with a value of p = 0.035, there was a relationship between nurses' work motivation and their compliance in identifying patients when administering medication. The recommendation from this research is that the head of the room must carry out regular supervision regarding nurses' compliance in administering medication according to standard hospital operational procedures.
