Abstract

This research is a study of the role and influence of a village leader, namely Kyai Nurjalipah. The aim of this research is to explain the origins of Kyai Nurjalipah, his role and his influence in the field of state administration of the Perdikan Pakuncen Village in 1651-1760. The method used in this research is a historical research method by utilizing oral data sources through interviews and library sources. The results of this research showed that there is a close connection between Kyai Nurjalipah and the field of state administration of the Pakuncen Village. Kyai Nurjalipah can be said to be the 'owner' of the Pakuncen land because he was the person who opened that residential land. The development of Pakuncen Village is also inseparable from the role and influence of Kyai Nurjalipah, starting from his role as a spreader of Islam in the village, making Pakuncen as an important area of the Kadipaten Posono, his agreement with Mataram Palace that resulted in the changing status of the pakuncen into a perdikan land, until making policies to regulate villagers, which greatly affected the form of government, the condition of the population and culture of the village community at that time.

Abstract

The paper examines the extent to which China's ‘soft power’ in Indonesia is effective in reducing negative perceptions of the anti-communist propaganda launched by the United States-backed Suharto regime during the Cold War. Using theoretical framework proposed by Joseph S. Nye and relevant theories from Joshua Kurlantzick, the study finds that China's soft power performance in Indonesia is significant. After years of harboring a negative image due to anti-communist campaigns, a new, friendlier image of China is emerging. This transformation is reflected by a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, which shows show that 65 percent of Indonesians have a positive perception of China. There are several dimensions of soft power I discuss in this paper, ranging from educational diplomacy such as providing scholarships for Indonesian students; religious diplomacy or ‘Islamic diplomacy’ with through Indonesia’s two largest religious organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah; and the establishment of Confucius Institutes on university campuses. These components were preceded by vigorous economic diplomacy by China, particularly during the Joko Widodo presidency (2014-2024), and were later reinforced by expanding Chinese digital diplomacy, which takes the form of entertainment and gaming platforms for young people, further distancing China from being perceived as a threat. Overall, this demonstrates how China’s soft power efforts have helped to mitigate the lingering negative perceptions of China linked to the Indonesian Communist Party of the mid-twentieth century.

Abstract

This study explores the reinvention of TOAFL preparation through the implementation of Cooperative Learning as an innovative pedagogical framework in Islamic higher education. Conducted as a multiple case study at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung and UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, this research investigates how cooperative learning models reshape instructional practices, student engagement, and academic Arabic proficiency in high-stakes standardized testing contexts. Grounded in Social Interdependence Theory, the study examines how positive interdependence, individual accountability, promotive interaction, and collaborative skills are operationalized in TOAFL classrooms. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, involving lecturers, program coordinators, and students participating in TOAFL preparation programs. The findings reveal that cooperative learning not only enhances students’ linguistic competence including listening, structure, and reading skills but also fosters higher-order thinking, peer scaffolding, and adaptive learning strategies aligned with the demands of 21st-century education. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that collaborative learning environments contribute to increased motivation, reduced test anxiety, and stronger academic resilience. Institutional culture and lecturer innovation emerge as critical factors in sustaining the transformation of TOAFL pedagogy. This research proposes a future-oriented model of TOAFL preparation that integrates collaborative learning principles with digital support systems, positioning cooperative learning as a strategic framework for strengthening academic Arabic proficiency in Islamic universities. The study contributes theoretically to the application of Social Interdependence Theory in standardized language assessment contexts and practically to the development of adaptive, student-centered TOAFL programs in contemporary higher education.

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The grand theory used is the hermeneutic theory proposed by Gadamer which emphasizes that the educational horizon someone has in the present is formed as an accumulation of various cadre formations in the past in a continuous circular motion. The results of the study show that, first, there is a focus on producing cleric cadres through the Hadith Studies Program, enabling them to understand and read classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). Second, a curriculum for Hadith studies based on Turats is designed to develop a moderate and tolerant interpretation of Islam with a Nusantara perspective. Third, there is a Tahfidz Hadith Scholarship, with the requirement of passing an exam in reading classical texts (kitab kuning). Fourth, there is a Hadith memorization program through a Hadith Studies Boarding School quarantine. Fifth, ulama from Egypt are invited to teach, using Arabic as the language of instruction. This study concludes that the restoration of Arabic language learning can be an effective solution in addressing the cleric crisis at UIN Satu Tulungagung.
