Abstract

Research on ergonomic risk factors for neck pain among Islamic boarding school students remains scarce, despite their prolonged study and Qur’an memorization activities in static sitting postures. Non-neutral body posture during learning may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly neck pain, which can impair concentration and quality of life. This analytic cross-sectional study aimed to assess students’ body posture during study and memorization activities and to examine its association with neck pain. A total of 72 boarding and non-boarding students participated. Data were collected using questionnaires and the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), and analyzed with chi-square tests and logistic regression to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) and p-values. Neck pain was reported by 63.9% of respondents; 72.2% exhibited poor sitting posture, and 80.6% reported moderate-to-severe stress. Bivariate analysis showed a significant association between stress level and neck pain (p = 0.033; PR = 2.19; 95% CI: 1.25–3.83). In multivariate logistic regression, no variable reached conventional statistical significance; however, students with moderate-to-severe stress had a 3.81-fold higher risk of neck pain (p = 0.057). These findings underscore the need for integrated ergonomic and psychosocial interventions in Islamic boarding school settings to reduce neck pain risk among students.

Abstract

The high incidence of breast cancer remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia. Breast cancer management is challenging because the disease is generally detected at an advanced stage. In fact, breast self-examination (BSE) is a simple and inexpensive method for the early detection of breast cancer. Early detection and management of breast cancer are expected to reduce mortality rates associated with the disease. A preliminary survey revealed that nearly all members of the FKMT Sukarami women’s study group were unaware of breast self-examination and the use of family medicinal plants (ginger) for breast cancer prevention. Based on these findings, this community service activity aimed to enhance public knowledge and skills in performing breast self-examination and utilizing family medicinal plants. The activities included lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. Evaluation was carried out by measuring knowledge levels before and after the program. The analysis showed an increase in knowledge regarding breast cancer, breast self-examination, and the use of family medicinal plants (ginger) following the educational session.

Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common work-related musculoskeletal disorder associated with repetitive hand activities. Online motorcycle drivers are at increased risk due to prolonged gripping and repetitive wrist movements. Anthropometric factors and hand strength have been suggested as potential contributors to CTS, but evidence remains inconsistent, particularly in informal occupational groups. This study aimed to analyze the association between wrist ratio, body mass index (BMI), and hand grip strength with CTS symptoms based on the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ). An observational cross-sectional study was conducted involving 80 online motorcycle drivers selected using consecutive sampling. Wrist ratio, BMI, and hand grip strength were measured, while CTS symptoms were assessed using the BCTQ. Data was analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical tests. CTS symptoms were identified in 48.8% of participants. A substantial proportion of participants were classified as overweight or obese (approximately 44%). Statistical analysis showed no significant association between wrist ratio, BMI, or hand grip strength and CTS symptoms (p > 0.05). Wrist ratio, BMI, and hand grip strength were not significantly associated with CTS symptoms among online motorcycle drivers. These findings suggest that CTS is a multifactorial condition influenced by factors beyond basic anthropometric and strength measurements.

Abstract

Background: Scaffolds represent biomaterials designed to provide structural support for cellular adhesion and growth factor sequestration, emulating the extracellular matrix (ECM) to promote tissue regeneration. Plant-based tissues have garnered attention as viable scaffold alternatives owing to their architectural homology with human extracellular structures. Gambier leaves (Uncaria gambir) stand out for their inherent porous, trabecular morphology, where microporosity is pivotal in facilitating cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. Objective: This study aims to elucidate the microporous characteristics of decellularized gambier leaves via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Method: Fresh leaves were meticulously cleaned, cryopreserved at −20°C, and fashioned into five circular discs employing a biopsy punch. Decellularization entailed submersion in 10% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) for five days, succeeded by distilled water lavage. Subsequent cyclic treatment with Tween-20 and NaClO solutions, applied every 24 hours, continued until optical translucency was achieved. Processed tissues underwent thorough washing, overnight fixation, serial ethanol dehydration, hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) treatment, 50 nm gold sputter-coating, and SEM evaluation across three magnifications. Results: Microscopy revealed surface wrinkling and partial architectural collapse in multiple specimens, likely due to dehydration-induced artifacts. Conversely, a single intact sample exhibited pronounced microporosity, as evidenced by pore diameters of 0.689 µm and 0.5512 µm. Conclusion: These observations affirm the microporous potential of decellularized gambier leaves for cellular anchorage and nutrient permeation, bolstering their candidacy as plant-derived scaffolds in tissue engineering. Nonetheless, inter-sample variability underscores the need for refined decellularization/dehydration methods and expanded quantitative assessments to ensure reproducible structural integrity.
