Abstract

Abstract

This study focuses on observing the structure of mangrove vegetation in Popalo Village, North Gorontalo Regency. Scientists found that the condition of mangrove forests in the area is not uniform, with some areas still well maintained, especially near rivers and beaches, while other areas, especially near settlements, have been damaged due to land conversion into ponds. This type of research is descriptive quantitative using a survey method. The most dominant type of mangrove found is Rhizophora. In addition, this study also shows that environmental factors such as temperature, air acidity, and salt levels greatly affect the growth and development of mangroves. Overall, the results of this study highlight the importance of better conservation and management efforts for mangrove forests in Popalo Village to maintain the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.

Abstract

Background: Mangrove ecosystems are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, including crab communities, which are vital to the stability of these ecosystems. Crabs contribute to nutrient cycling and the food web, reinforcing the overall ecological health of coastal habitats. This study focuses on the crab communities in the mangrove area of Tabongo Village, Dulupi District, Boalemo Regency, examining how environmental conditions affect their distribution and diversity. Methods: The research involved surveys at three stations representing different mangrove vegetation conditions. Crab species were identified and their diversity and abundance recorded. Environmental parameters, such as temperature, salinity, and pH, were measured, and the diversity index (H') was calculated to assess species diversity and the relationship between crab communities  and environmental factors. Findings: A total of 11 crab species from 4 families were identified, including Uca (Paraleptuca) annulipes and Ocypode ceratophthalmus. The diversity index ranged from 1.3 to 1.6, indicating moderate diversity. Environmental conditions, with temperatures between 32–34 °C, salinity from 13–19 ppt, and pH from 6.5 to 7, were conducive to crab survival. Station III, with healthier mangrove vegetation, supported greater crab diversity and abundance compared to degraded stations. Conclusion: The study highlights the crucial role of healthy mangrove ecosystems in sustaining crab biodiversity and ecosystem stability. It underscores the importance of mangrove conservation for maintaining biodiversity and protecting coastal ecosystems from degradation. Novelty/Originality of this article: By linking the health of mangrove ecosystems to crab diversity and abundance, it emphasizes the direct impact of environmental factors on crab populations. The findings highlight the importance of mangrove conservation not only for species richness but also for maintaining the ecological balance in coastal ecosystems, offering valuable data for future biodiversity management and conservation efforts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the composition and structure of vegetation and estimate the potential for carbon dioxide absorption in the Tangale Nature Reserve Area, Gorontalo Regency. The method used in this study is the determination of sampling locations carried out by purposive sampling, making multilevel plots, analyzing vegetation structure, and estimating tree biomass is done non-destructively based on measuring the height and diameter of trees at breast height (DBH), while for lower plants it is done destructively and litter is taken all in the plot area to be weighed wet and dry weight and then estimating biomass, C reserves, and CO2 uptake. The results showed that the vegetation composition consisted of 18 species dominated by the Magnoliopsida class. The highest Important Value Index is found at each observation station. Calculation of biomass value, C reserves, and CO2 uptake at each observation station showed varying results because they were influenced by vegetation type, vegetation density, vegetation composition and structure, and environmental factors. The total value of CO2 uptake by vegetation in the Tangale Nature Reserve Area is 5,304.393 tons of CO2/ha. This research provides a better understanding of carbon sequestration potential in conservation areas to support environmental conservation and climate change mitigation efforts.

Abstract

The mola-mola fish (Mola spp.), or ocean sunfish, is the largest bony fish species in the world, playing a crucial role in marine ecosystems and holding high economic value as an underwater tourism attraction. However, this species faces various threats, such as bycatch, marine pollution, and climate change, which affect its distribution and reproduction. This study aims to analyze public perceptions of mola-mola conservation through a review of literature and social media data. The study involved an analysis of scientific literature using VOSviewer and the collection of social media data, particularly on TikTok, using a web scraper. Sentiment analysis was performed using a machine learning method based on Support Vector Machine (SVM). The results indicate that public perception is dominated by positive sentiment (45%) regarding the unique appeal of mola-mola, although negative sentiment (30%) persists due to a lack of public knowledge about the importance of conservation. This study highlights the need for sustainable habitat management and community-based collaboration to increase conservation awareness. The findings emphasize that public education and collaboration between the government, scientists, and local communities are essential to reduce threats to mola-mola, including the impacts of climate change and illegal fishing. This research underscores that community-based strategies and multidisciplinary approaches can enhance the effectiveness of mola-mola conservation and ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems in Indonesia.

Abstract

Environmental ethics is becoming increasingly relevant in a global context facing climate change, species extinction, and ecosystem degradation. Ethical approaches in conservation decision-making are essential for achieving sustainable development. The need to integrate moral values into conservation policies is becoming urgent due to the conflict between economic and ecological interests. This raises ethical questions regarding the welfare of individual animals versus the broader ecosystem. Although there are several studies on environmental ethics, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of how ethical values can be integrated into conservation policies and sustainable development, especially in local contexts like Indonesia. This study analyzes eight studies that explore various ethical approaches in conservation and sustainable development, including local wisdom, animal welfare, and holistic approaches. The analysis shows that environmental ethical values are not only globally relevant but also crucial in local contexts. Indigenous communities play an important role in promoting sustainable conservation practices by integrating local wisdom. These findings highlight the importance of considering ethics in conservation policies, both globally and locally, to ensure long-term environmental sustainability and the welfare of all living beings
