Abstract

Memorizing vocabulary is hard for certain students; this conventional strategy has so many weaknesses. Therefore, technology has an important role in the scope of teaching and learning EFL. Engaging students’ habits with their gadgets, especially in gamification “Blooket” is a new way to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. This study stands to examine the use of educational games-based learning to enhance Students’ English vocabulary. A qualitative study will be carried out as a study-based design and focus on students’ perception of playing the Blooket game.  40 students (7,8 and 9 grades of Junior High School students) were involved as a subject of research. A questionnaire was given to students using Google Forms to get the data and analyzed it. The result shows that using Blooket can enhance students’ motivation in learning vocabulary because it makes them fun, competitive, and understand the vocabulary (not by memorizing). Blooket also has weakness in speed and accuracy because of Internet connection and the gadget’s performance. Therefore, this can be used as an alternative to breaking the old way of learning vocabulary

Abstract

In the teaching-learning process, a classroom conversation is managed by the teacher to attain specific purposes. The success of teaching-learning process, in addition, requires teacher-student interaction to gain relevant experiences in students’ target language. During the class, taking-turn will likely happen in a classroom interaction. However, during this class, the teacher-student turn seems to be asymmetrical. The teacher tends to be the main speaker allocating the turn to maintain teacher-student interaction. This research, further, aims at exploring turn-taking strategies utilised by EFL pre-service teacher. The researcher utilises a qualitative research approach with a conversation analysis. The data used in this research is unscripted-recorded classroom video. Furthermore, the data is transcribed into conversational data to obtain the data of turn-taking strategies utilised by pre-service teacher in EFL classroom setting. In analysing the data, the researcher ulitises Sacks’ framework (1984). Based on the result of data analysis, it is found that there are seven turn-taking strategies utilised by pre-service teacher in EFL classroom settting. These are adjacency pairs, addressing term, utterance in-completor, repair technique, possible pre-closing, overlaps, and tag question. In addition, the teacher mostly uses question-answer adjacency pairs during the teaching-learning process. This, however, leads to asymmetric turn between teacher and students. The teacher seems to be more dominant to initiate and take turn during classroom conversation. Possible pre-closing, on the other hand, is the least turn-taking strategy used by the pre-service teacher in the teaching-learning process. This turn used by pre-service teacher to close or end a conversation in the teaching-learning process. Since this research has dealt with pre-service teacher, the results will be beneficial for the pre-service teacher to manage turn-taking strategies in EFL classroom setting to ensure the classroom interaction and conversation symmetrical.

Abstract

Studies on English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ identity construction have been extensively investigated in recent years. However, the previous studies exclusively focused on teachers in higher education and neglected Global Englishes (GE) concept as a mediator in identity construction. Therefore, to fill this lacuna, the current narrative research study explored the identity construction of 10 Indonesian EFL secondary school teachers in the Global Englishes era. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews and observations and were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. Findings were elaborated into six emerging themes; they were 1) teachers’ perspectives of Global Englishes, 2) the goal of teaching English, 3) native speaker fallacy, 4) the use of mother tongue, 5) the use of Western cultures, and 6) the use of international English textbooks. Based on the investigation, the teachers echoed multiple identities as English teachers vis-à-vis the Global Englishes era. Although they are aware of such an issue, their tenets to adhere to the practice of native speaker fallacy are still strongly held. In other words, our study revealed a perceptual mismatch among the teachers with regard to their identities in a Global Englishes era.

Abstract

Teachers have different backgrounds, and their opinions regarding "creative teaching" or "good teaching" methods are frequently shaped by a range of elements, such as their own teaching experiences, personal incentives, and organizational limitations. This setting frames teachers' initial attempts to cultivate creative practices, and their recognition of these effects influences their subsequent level of creativity. The goal of this research is to discover the characteristics that influence English language teaching (ELT) teachers' creativity. Researchers interviewed six English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers to learn more about the elements that drive their passion and creativity in the classroom. Researchers discovered that teachers' motivation, technology, school support, colleagues, and teaching knowledge and experience all had an impact on their creativity. Teachers can use these five aspects as guidelines to help them incorporate creativity into their lessons. Participants also believed that their creativity was required to inspire creativity in students, make learning fun, and support their learning. The quickly evolving potential of digital environments to support student-centered and self-directed learning seems to contribute to this belief. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that teachers do not naturally possess creativity, but they may cultivate it by adopting new ideas and improving their creative teaching skills.

The school and the community service team conducted an intensive and interesting training to determine the effectiveness of communicating in English with roleplay methods, demonstrations, and the use of learning media. The use of appropriate learning media is very important in improving the English speaking skills of SMK teachers, both in the area of hard skills and soft skills, so that they can provide more effective and efficient teaching to students and prepare them to face the increasingly globalized world of work. The training was conducted six times at SMK in Malang City and was attended by 24 teachers. For the posttest, they did a speech in English. The training resulted in seventeen teachers, or 70.8%, who could communicate in English, and seven teachers (29.2%) still did not meet the minimum score of 70. The active involvement of the teachers and the positive responses from the teachers in communicating in English, as well as the support from the school, could trigger their motivation to learn and speak. Thus, it is suggested that the next activity can provide various materials and be carried out regularly.
