Abstract

Background: Adolescents’ lifestyle has been changing overtime, impacting their body weight, height, body mass index, and waist hip ratio. This changes also outgrow with the changes of sagittal curvature of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. Thoracic hyperkyphosis and lumbar hyperlordosis is a disease not only affecting convenience, but also psychologically impacted (body image disorder). The only way to stop this is by aiming for preventive measure, by knowing the correlation between these variables to thoracic hyperkyphosis and lumbar hyperlordosis.Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in two schools, SMAN 2 Jakarta and SMA Katolik Diakonia. This study used weight scales to measure body weight and scaled-tape to measure body height. The sagittal curvature was measured by flexicurve.Result: Out of 154 respondents, 49.35 % were male students and the rest 50.65% were female students. Hyperkyphotic students were found 24.68%, and hyperlordotic students were found 24.02%. No correlation was found between variables but IMT to lumbar hyperlordosis. Weak correlation also found between waist and hip circumference and lumbar hyperlordosis. Conclusion: Weak correlation was found between Body Mass Index (BMI) and lumbar hyperlordosis in high school students. No correlation found between waist-hip ratio and lumbar hyperlordosis, but weak correlation was found between waist and hip circumference and lumbar hyperlordosis. No correlation was found between variables and thoracic hyperkyphosis.

Abstract

Highlights: 1. This is the first cross-sectional study in Indonesia that was conducted specifically to find a correlation between physical activity levels and food intake.2. As lower physical activity was found to be associated with higher food intake, this study suggests that physical activity might be taken into consideration to manipulate one’s food consumption   Abstract One of the most crucial things a person can do to enhance the well-being of their body is to engage in regular physical activity. However, currently, there are still many people who have low physical activity levels. It is stated that habitual physical activity can affect the sensitivity of food intake regulation. This study aimed to determine the correlation between the total food intake and physical activity of preclinical students. This study was conducted using the cross-sectional method among preclinical students (n=238) in the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019 at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia. Subjects with appetite-manipulating supplements, a diet program, a history of metabolic disease, a history of eating disorders, stress, or trauma were excluded from this study. The physical activity level was evaluated using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ), while the total food intake was evaluated using the three-day food record method. The statistical test applied in this study was the Spearman test, with a significance of p<0.05. There were 22.3% of respondents with a low physical activity level, and there were 9.7% of respondents with a total food intake higher than recommended. The statistical analysis showed a significant negative correlation between physical activity levels and total food intake (p=0.008). In conclusion, there is an association between students’ physical activity levels and their total food intake.

Abstract

Background: Yoga has been known as an alternative therapeutic modality for reducing pain. The benefits of yoga for reducing pain have been proven. Women often suffer pain due to dysmenorrhea. The effect of Yoga on dysmenorrhea pain has not been widely studiedObjectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of hatha yoga on pain in primary dysmenorrhea (PD). Methods: This was a randomized controlled study (RCT) involving 50 female students, 25 each in control (C) and yoga group (Y). PD was diagnosed by Working ability, Location, Intensity (Wong-Baker scale), and Days of the Pain of Dysmenorrhea (WaLIDD) questionnaire. Pain intensity was assessed by the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Hatha yoga training was conducted for 12 weeks. The unpaired t-test, ANOVA and Tukey post hoc, and Pearson correlation test was applied. Significance was set at p<0.05. Results: The characteristics between groups were not different. ANOVA indicated the NRS score in control was not changed, while yoga was diminished (p=0.02). Tukey post hoc showed that the second and third NRS were lower than basal NRS (p=0.038 and 0.01, respectively). The third was also lower than the second NRS (p=0.039). The second and the third NRS in yoga were lower than in control (p=0.027 and <0.01, respectively). The second magnitude of change of NRS was significantly different from the first in yoga (1.92 ±2.4 vs. 3.09 ± 2.8, p=0.018). The magnitude of NRS changes in the first (0.06±1.1 vs. 1.92±2.4, p=0.013) and second (0.02 ± 1.6 vs. 3.09 ± 2.8, p= 0.004) in yoga was significantly greater than the control. NRS score was not correlated with age, BMI, and age of menarche. Conclusions: Hatha yoga exercise ameliorate pain intensity in primary dysmenorrhea among female university students.

Abstract

Anatomical and physiological changes occur along with the aging process. One of the changes is decreased flexibility due to changes in the musculoskeletal system. Upper and lower limb flexibility is closely related to the ability to carry out daily activities, which affects the quality of life of the elderly. Surya  Namaskar yoga is known to help increase flexibility because it integrates stretching components within its movement. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Surya  Namaskar on flexibility in the pre-elderly and elderly. It was is quasi-experimental study with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest research design. A total of 20 participants were selected using consecutive sampling according to the inclusion criteria. Flexibility measurements of the upper and lower limbs were carried out before and after the intervention using the back scratch test and chair sit and reach test methods. Surya  Namaskar intervention was carried out for 8 wk. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, paired t-test, and Wilcoxon test. The results showed that there was a highly significant difference between the mean value of the back-scratch test (for upper limb flexibility) before and after the intervention (p<0.001). Significant differences were also found in the mean values of chair-sit-and-reach test measurements (for lower extremity flexibility) before and after the intervention (p<0.001). In conclusion, Surya  Namaskar exercises can improve the flexibility of the upper and lower extremities in the pre-elderly and elderly.

Abstract

Background: Medical students are susceptible to mental illnesses that are brought on by expectations for exceeding academic success. To avoid more serious risks in the future, medical students must manage their stress because it contributes to anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and decreased academic success. Regular yoga practice is one effective and efficient lifestyle modification that can be used to handle stress. This systematic review shows how yoga can help medical students feel less stressed. This study aims to determine the effect between the duration and frequency of Asana and Pranayama Yoga on stress levels in medical students. Methods: Studies till 2022 are used in this systematic review. Articles were accumulated using PubMed, ProQuest, and EBSCOhost. Each search engine has its own designated keywords. Studies were assessed using the NHLBI Study Quality Assessment Tools. Ten studies met the criteria for this study and were all used and analyzed.  Results: There were ten studies that met this systematic review criteria and were rated as having good quality by the NHLBI quality assessment tool. All studies showed an association between the frequency of yoga sessions and reduced stress in medical students. Some studies had shorter yoga sessions than others, so the duration of each session did not affect the results as much as the frequency.  Conclusion: This study shows that the frequency of yoga sessions has an impact, resulting in lower stress levels in medical students. The impact of yoga duration is minimal when compared to yoga frequency. Yoga should be applied as an intervention to increase the quality of life of medical students.
