Abstract

Background: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) who are intravenous drug users (IVDU) are increasing in number, and mostly are on both antiretroviral therapy (ART) and methadone maintenance therapy (MMT). In Indonesia, PLWHA and IVDU are more easily infected with tuberculosis (TB) and/or viral hepatitis. Co-infections and drug interaction may negatively affect their adherence to ART. Goal: To observe ART adherence among IVDU who were on MMT with PLWHA with/without co-infections (TB and/or viral hepatitis). Method: Thirty-four PLWHA who were IVDU from kios Atma Jaya and Tambora public primary health care participated in this cross-sectional study from October to December 2012. They filled out questionnaires on demographic data, previous viral hepatitis and TB infection, ART & MMT data, and adherence to ART by self report. Results: Group 1: 20 (58.8%) respondents were/had been co infected with TB/viral hepatitis (9 respondents had finished TB treatment, 6 respondents were on TB treatment, 5 respondents had untreated viral hepatitis only). Group 2: 14 (41.2%) respondents had never been co-infected with TB/ viral hepatitis. We found that nine respondents in group 1 (45%) and six respondents in group 2 (42,9%) adhered optimally to ART. Six (66,7%) respondents who had finished TB treatment, one respondent (16,7%) who were on TB drugs, and two respondents (40%) who had untreated viral hepatitis, adhered optimally to ART. Conclusions: Less than 50% respondents adhered optimally to ART. Respondents who had optimal ART adherence among those who had finished TB treatment, who were on TB drugs, and who had untreated viral hepatitis were 66.7%, 16.7%, and 40%.

Abstract

Background: The advancements in technology in the form of smartphones have made life easier; however, some negative effects have been recorded with regards to the use of smartphone. Among these negative effects are nomophobia, or a phobia of no mobile phone, and lack of attention. This study explored the relationship between nomophobia and attention in medical students. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytic study on medical students in Jakarta in 2019. The Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) was used to measure the level of nomophobia and the Six Letter Cancellation Test (SLCT) was used to measure attention. Data collected were analyzed using a simple linear regression test.Result: There was a weak negative relationship between the severity of nomophobia and attention (r=.161). However, nomophobia score was a very weak predictor for attention with an adjusted r-squared score of .021.Conclusions: Nomophobia does not necessarily affect the attention of medical students. Excessive mobile phone use does cause nomophobia and lack of attention. Therefore, smartphones need to be used wisely.

Abstract

Background: Narcissism is a condition in which people have a constant demand to be complimented and prioritized. Self-esteem is a subjective evaluation of one's worth. Several studies have linked narcissism and low self-esteem as a risk factor of social media addiction, a disorder where individuals displayed an unhealthy compulsion to access social media until it disrupts other activities. This study aimed to discover the relationship between narcissism, self-esteem, and social media addiction in preclinical medical students. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional observational analytical study on 211 preclinical medical students at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Instruments used in this study were Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). Data were analyzed statistically using Chi-square in STATA analytic program. Results: Of all respondents, 6.6% were narcissistic, 19.9% had low self-esteem, and 34.6% had social media addiction. There was a significant relationship between narcissism and social media addiction (p=0.021) and between self-esteem and social media addiction (p=0.002).Conclusion: There is a relationship between narcissism, self-esteem, and social media addiction in university students. This indicates the importance of preliminary psychological screening in students, especially regarding self-esteem, narcissism, and social media addiction, to develop approaches that will ensure good academic achievements and physical health among students.

Abstract

Introduction: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) accounts for the largest proportion of cardiovascular diseases. CHD patients may experience depressive symptoms or major depressive disorder. Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) Score has good sensitivity and specificity for patients with CHD. Negative illness perception is significantly associated with more severe levels of depression. The aim of this study is to understand the characteristics of the perception of illness and PHQ-9 scores in patients with CHD at Atma Jaya Hospital, Jakarta. Methods: A cross-sectional research was done on CHD patients in the clinic of Internal Medicine and Cardiac Sub-Specialist clinics, Cosmas outpatient unit in Atma Jaya Hospital over the course of September-October 2015. The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) and PHQ-9 were used to assess the characteristics of illness perception and determine the level of depression in patients with CHD. Univariate analysis were used to process the data. Results: 42 patients met the inclusion criteria. 62% of subjects had a positive perception of the disease and 38% had a negative perception. The highest average score of B-IPQ was the illness concern. Majority of the subjects 48.8% had minimal depression and none of the subject had severe depression. Conclusion: B-IPQ scores indicated positive illness perception and PHQ-9 shows minimal depression in most of CHD patients
