Abstract

The low problem-solving ability of students in momentum and impulse topics remains a critical issue in high school physics education, worsened by the lack of interactive learning media. This study aims to: (1) determine the validity level of a problem-solving-oriented interactive physics e-module; and (2) examine students' responses to the e-module. A Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4-D model was employed, implemented through the Develop stage. Data were collected using expert validation questionnaires and student response questionnaires. The subjects consisted of 10 eleventh-grade Mathematics and Natural Sciences students from a State High School in Sumbawa Regency (2020/2021), selected through purposive sampling. The novelty of this study lies in the explicit integration of Polya's problem-solving indicators into every e-module component, incorporating text, images, animations, simulations, audio, and video within a single digital platform distinguishing it from prior static e-modules. The results showed that: (1) the e-module achieved a validity level in the "very feasible" category at 84.39%; and (2) student responses were categorized as "very good" at 85.16%. Therefore, this interactive physics e-module is suitable as an innovative alternative learning medium.

Abstract

Science (IPA) is a core subject at the primary and secondary education levels requiring comprehension of abstract concepts alongside scientific thinking skills. High rates of science learning difficulties are consistently reported internationally, including in Indonesia; however, no systematic synthesis has comprehensively summarised contributing factors and alternative solutions across all school levels (Elementary–High School) in a single manuscript. This review aims to identify factors causing science learning difficulties and effective alternative solutions based on the scientific literature from 2012 to 2021. Searches were conducted on Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Twenty-five articles meeting inclusion criteria were analysed through thematic narrative synthesis. Results show factors divide into internal (low interest and motivation, science anxiety, weak prerequisite knowledge) and external (teacher-centred pedagogy, inadequate laboratory facilities, insufficient parental support). Proven effective alternative solutions include inquiry-based learning, cooperative learning, technology/visual media use, and structured remedial programmes. Conclusion: science learning difficulties are multifactorial; consistent implementation of inquiry and cooperative approaches improves student engagement and achievement across educational levels.

Abstract

The diversity of students in terms of learning readiness, interests, and learning profiles demands a learning approach that accommodates individual differences, one of which is through differentiated learning. The widespread development of digital technology after the pandemic and in line with the agenda for digital transformation in education opens up opportunities to realize differentiation more practically and at scale. This article is a narrative review that synthesizes the theoretical foundations and practical evidence of digital technology integration in differentiated learning based on the literature from 2018–2021. The study shows that digital technology plays a role as an enabler of differentiation in content, processes, products, and learning environments through adaptive and personalized learning, multimodal resources, flipped and blended learning models, and data-driven formative assessment. However, this integration does not occur automatically. Its effectiveness depends on the quality of pedagogical design, teachers' technological-pedagogical competencies (TPACK), and equitable access. The digital divide, diverse conceptualizations of differentiation, and the risk of technology dominating pedagogy are key challenges. This article recommends strengthening teacher competencies and learning designs based on the principles of differentiation as the key to meaningful integration.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic forced a drastic shift in the implementation of learning in Indonesia, from face-to-face instruction to online distance learning. Amid limited internet access, data quota, and devices, WhatsApp emerged as one of the most widely used instant messaging applications among teachers and students due to its accessibility, simplicity, and relatively light data usage. This study aims to narratively describe how WhatsApp was utilized in the learning process and in the implementation of assessment during the Covid-19 pandemic, and to identify the advantages, obstacles, and strategies used by educators to optimize the application. This research employs a qualitative approach with a narrative literature review method of studies published between 2019 and 2021. The results show that WhatsApp was used in the learning process through text messages, voice and video calls, and the sharing of documents, images, and audio recordings to deliver materials, give instructions, and build teacher-student interaction. In terms of assessment, WhatsApp was used to distribute questions, collect assignments in the form of photos or documents, provide feedback, and conduct affective assessment through observation of student activity in class groups. However, several obstacles were found, such as limited internet quota, signal disruption, lack of face-to-face interaction, and the potential for academic dishonesty in completing assignments. The study concludes that WhatsApp is an accessible and effective alternative medium for distance learning, but requires appropriate pedagogical strategies and assessment management to maintain the quality of learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problem-solving ability of grade X students at an Islamic senior high school (Madrasah Aliyah) in Sumbawa Regency on the topic of Work and Energy using George Polya's four problem-solving stages: variable identification, concept selection, mathematical execution, and result verification. Data were collected through a test administered to 11 students, interviews with the subject teacher, and observation of classroom conditions and school facilities. The results show that the class average score was only 42.27, far below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) of 70-75, with a 0% pass rate. The most prominent weaknesses were found in the mathematical execution and result verification stages, while variable identification was relatively better mastered, although often incomplete. Further analysis indicates that difficulty increases with the complexity of the problem-solving steps, particularly in conceptual-narrative and multi-step problems. The main contributing factors include weak prerequisite mathematical knowledge, low science literacy, limited variation in teaching methods (dominance of lecturing), and restricted access to instructional media and laboratory facilities. These findings suggest the implementation of Problem Based Learning (PBL) supported by educational game media as an alternative strategy to train problem identification skills while increasing students' motivation to learn physics.

Abstract

Face-to-face learning cannot currently be carried out as usual because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The learning process carried out at home is one way to break the chain of the spread of Covid-19. It is very demanding independence of learning from prospective physics teachers. Use of online media based on the Learning Management System (LMS): Schoology is now very necessary to keep the learning process. This study aims to determine the level of learning independence of prospective physics teachers amid the widespread spread of Covid-19 through the application of LMS-based learning: Schoology. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted on prospective physics teachers in the physics education program at Universitas Samawa, Sumbawa Besar. Respondents from this study were 15 people selected by saturated sampling techniques. The instrument in this study used a questionnaire with a Likert scale of 20 statement items as the main data of learning independence of the prospective physics teacher. The results showed that the level of self-directed learning of physics teacher candidates on Universitas Samawa amid the Covid-19 pandemic was in the very high category through the application of LMS: Schoology in learning.

Abstract

A good learning process is one that can help students construct their knowledge, skills, and attitudes to solve every problem in their daily lives. To achieve such a learning process, the Think Pair Share learning model is needed as an alternative solution. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Think Pair Share learning model on high school students' physics learning outcomes. This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test control group design. The research population consisted of all students at one of the senior high schools in Sumbawa, while the research sample was divided into two groups of 11th-grade science students: the experimental group and the control group. The research instrument used was a test. The data were analyzed using a t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the physics learning outcomes of students in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, and the calculated t-value was > t-table, namely 6.430 > 1.684. Therefore, it can be concluded that the TPS learning model has an effect on the physics learning outcomes of high school students.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid shift from traditional face-to-face learning to online modalities, including student evaluations. This study delves into the disparity between the perceived effectiveness of online learning evaluations and actual student experiences during the pandemic, drawing insights from existing data that highlighted student disagreement regarding the ability of online evaluations to measure material mastery, foster creativity, and enhance thinking skills. While previous research often focuses on quantitative correlations, this qualitative-dominant analysis aims to explore the underlying reasons for student dissatisfaction. It investigates how factors such as technical issues, time pressure, and the design of online assessment tools contribute to these perceptions. By understanding the nuances of student perspectives, this paper seeks to provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers in designing more effective, equitable, and student-centric online evaluation strategies that move beyond mere digital replication of traditional methods.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an abrupt shift to online learning, including its evaluation, presenting both challenges and opportunities for innovation in higher education. This study, originally conducted at Universitas Samawa, explored lecturers' and students' profiles and perceptions of online learning evaluations during the pandemic. Findings revealed that WhatsApp was the most dominant platform (76.7%) due to its ease of use, practicality, and accessibility. However, significant obstacles emerged, primarily unstable internet connectivity, especially for students in rural areas, and suboptimal understanding of online learning materials often due to lecturers merely sharing content without in-depth explanations. While online evaluations were perceived as more objective and capable of fostering creativity and critical thinking, concerns regarding academic integrity due to insufficient supervision were also noted. This paper analyzes these identified constraints, juxtaposing them with potential avenues for innovation in online evaluation practices. It argues that addressing connectivity gaps, enhancing pedagogical design for online content delivery, and implementing robust integrity measures are crucial for developing a more effective, equitable, and sustainable online evaluation system in the post-pandemic era.
