Abstract

As people age, the physical state of the human body will gradually deteriorate due to a decrease in the quantity of cells present, leading to a gradual reduction in functionality referred to as the aging process. In elderly humans (aged more than 60 years) excessive cholesterol levels and high blood pressure are one of the causes of diseases such as heart disease which has been recognized by WHO as the number one cause of death in the world. The buildup of fatty deposits on the linings of blood vessels has the potential to lead to obstructions within the blood vessels. The objective of this initiative is to enhance understanding regarding the hazards associated with cholesterol. This outreach effort took place in July 2023, conducted at Posyandu Abiyoso, Surabaya Health Polytechnic. The activity consists of several processes 1). conducting a survey of the location of the Abiyoso posyandu of the Surabaya Health Polytechnic, 2). Opening registration and taking participants' personal data, 3) conducting participant health interviews, 4). Checking cholesterol levels and blood pressure of participants. From the community service activities carried out, it was found that 42 of the 65 (64.6%) participants who took part in the examination at the integrated service post had high cholesterol levels, and 60 of the 65 (92.3%) participants had high blood pressure or hypertension. By conducting health checks on cholesterol levels and blood pressure, there is an expectation that the society will come to realize and comprehend. the dangers of hypertension and hypercholesterolemia so that the community can prevent the occurrence of sustainable diseases.

Abstract

Background: Peripheral blood smear examination (HDT) is a test to observe the morphology of blood cells microscopically. A peripheral blood smear is a simple method, and its examination is widely available in laboratories. The advantage of peripheral blood smear examination is its ability to assess various components of peripheral blood cells, such as cell morphology (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets). One of the commonly used methods for peripheral blood smear examination is Giemsa staining. The process of Giemsa staining fixation aims to preserve the cell structure and its components before the staining is performed. The precise fixation time is key to obtaining optimal staining results, which allows for accurate observation of cell morphology. The aim of this study is to analyze the morphology of leukocyte profiles in peripheral blood smears stained with Giemsa based on variations in fixation time to determine the optimal time. Methods: This research was conducted in August-September 2024. The sample in this study was whole blood taken from the academic community of the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology and examined with a peripheral blood smear using Giemsa staining, and analyzed using descriptive statistical tests with the SPSS for Windows 22 software. Results: The research results showed that at a fixation time of 3 minutes, 60% were good and 40% were less good; at 5 minutes, 100% were good; at 10 minutes, 100% were good; at 15 minutes, 40% were good and 60% were less good; and at 20 minutes, 20% were good and 80% were less good. Conclusion: The best time variation in Giemsa staining using phosphate buffer is fixation for 5 minutes and 10 minutes, where all preparations (5 preparations) are 100% in the good category.

Abstract

The Indonesian Red Cross (IRC) is a humanitarian organization that plays an important role in providing assistance to the community, particularly in the fields of health, disaster response, and blood donation services. The volunteer team from Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health, Surabaya, in collaboration with members of the Indonesian Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists Surabaya city and IRC Surabaya city, conducted free blood glucose level tests for prospective donors and the elderly (geriatric) in Al-Akbar Mosque Surabaya. This examination aims to detect potential health issues early, especially diabetes, which often poses challenges for blood donors and the elderly. Blood donors tend to neglect their health conditions due to the donation routine, so this examination ensures that they remain in optimal condition. Meanwhile, the elderly have a high risk of diabetes, which can affect their quality of life. The strategic location at Al-Akbar Mosque Surabaya facilitates access for the community who are far from the IRC Surabaya city office. The success of this activity is supported by various factors, including the involvement of professional health organizations such as the branch Surabaya City of Indonesian Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists, the support of health infrastructure from IRC Surabaya city, and the active participation of the community and volunteers. The respondents of the community service activity numbered 88 people, conducted on March 15 and 17, 2025, consisting of 59% men and 41% women, with an age range of 20-80 years and the majority of respondents aged 41-60 years (56.8%). From the examination results, it was found that 21% of male respondents and 13.9% of female respondents suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM), thus requiring medical follow-up and lifestyle changes. This activity is expected to raise public awareness about the importance of early diabetes detection and encourage a sustainable healthy lifestyle to prevent serious complications in the future

Abstract

Control materials are used to maintain the accuracy of testing procedures and the quality of laboratory results. However, commercial control materials are often considered less economical, so an alternative is needed, namely lyophilized human serum. Sigma metric helps improve laboratory operational costs efficiency through control settings and Westgard rule recommendations involving the Total Error Allowable (TEa) value, bias value (d%), and coefficient of variation (CV%). This study aims to determine the quality of commercial control materials and homemade lyophilized materials for blood glucose, uric acid, total cholesterol, and triglyceride parameters based on sigma values. This study used a comparative cross-sectional design. The samples included commercial control materials from one of the primary-level laboratories in Bangkalan District and homemade lyophilized samples from human serum collections. Data Analysis was conducted by statistically comparing the bias value and descriptively comparing the sigma value of commercial control material and homemade lyophilized. The results showed no significant difference in bias value between commercial control material and homemade lyophilized material for all parameters (significance value > α 0,05). The sigma values of commercial control material for blood glucose, uric acid, total cholesterol, and triglyceride parameters were 2.81 (poor), 2.41 (poor), 3.10 (marginal), and 2.14 (poor). The sigma values of the homemade lyophilized were 2.12 (poor), 1.76 (unacceptable), 3.36 (marginal), and 2.08 (poor). Based on the sigma values, the homemade lyophilized material was better for total cholesterol parameters, while the commercial control material was better for blood glucose, uric acid, and triglyceride parameters. It can be concluded that homemade lyophilized can be used as an alternative to commercial control materials, especially for total cholesterol parameters. These findings support the cost efficiency of laboratory operations through the development of more economical homemade lyophilized products that are suitable for use in laboratories.

Abstract

Stunting is still a big problem in Indonesia because it affects how kids grow and develop over time, especially if it isn't stopped early on. One reason for this is that parents, especially mothers, don't fully understand how to provide balanced nutritional supplementary feeding (PMT). This community service project is all about giving the guardians of Dharma Wanita Persatuan Kindergarten in Dukuhtengah the tools and information they need to do their jobs better. It will do this by making and using interactive educational media in Dukuhtengah Village, Buduran District, Sidoarjo Regency. The implementation method has many steps: working with the school, finding out what parents need to know, making educational materials like booklets and posters, giving advice and showing how to prepare PMT, and testing the students before and after. In total, 36 parents took part in this activity. The analysis results show that the participants' understanding has improved a lot. They scored an average of 54.86 on the pre-test and 86.39 on the post-test, which is an increase of 31.53 points. The paired t-test produced p<0.001, signifying a significant difference, and Cohen's d effect size of 3.79 indicates a substantial effect. This finding shows that the educational media that was created works to teach parents more about PMT and how to stop stunting. In conclusion, interactive educational empowerment activities that use media have been shown to help parents improve their ability to provide their children with the right extra food to meet their nutritional needs. The future goal is to repeat the activities at the Posyandu level and combine them with family-based public health programs to make stunting prevention more effective in the community.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The tutoring center "Kenosis" in Sidoyoso, established in 2016 by GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso, provides free educational support for elementary school children. This program helps in the academic and character development of children, initially taught by instructors from the Inter-University Christian Fellowship (Perkantas) and now reinforced by 4 permanent teachers. In addition to the need for tutoring, children are faced with daily conditions such as unhealthy snacks, low understanding of dental hygiene, and the importance of handwashing. These bad habits increase the risk of dental caries, infectious diseases, and the consumption of harmful food additives. Education and supervision are key to improving children's health and well-being. The Poltekkes Kemenkes Surabaya service team, consisting of 21 lecturers and 11 students, provided solutions to the above issues to 35 elementary school children at the Kenosis tutoring center on January 9, 2025, by delivering educational materials and practicing how to choose healthy snacks, brush teeth, and wash hands properly and correctly. Knowledge of harmful food additives The average pre-test score was 60.2, while the post-test score was 70.5. Understanding of proper tooth brushing techniques pre-test result 60.0 and post-test 70.5, understanding of good and correct handwashing habits had an average pre-test score of 60.0 and a post-test score of 70.5. There was an increase in knowledge about harmful food additives, proper tooth brushing techniques, and proper handwashing at the "Kenosis GKA Gloria Pos Sidoyoso" tutoring session. INDEX TERMS GKA Gloria, preservatives, food, PHBS, teeth.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Bulak Village in Surabaya has a population of approximately 22,330 people, with a relatively high proportion of elderly residents. The elderly are a vulnerable group for hypertension and anemia. According to the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey, the national prevalence of hypertension reached 30.8%, and East Java is one of the provinces with the highest rate (36%). To address this issue, a team of lecturers and staff from the Surabaya Ministry of Health Polytechnic conducted community service at the elderly health post in the Bulak urban village area of Surabaya. Activities include socialization, education, and blood pressure, hemoglobin, and hematocrit checks, targeting 49 elderly individuals. The results show that 36.7% of the elderly have stage 1 hypertension and 8.2% have stage 2 hypertension. A total of 51% of respondents have anemia (low Hb), and 67.3% have below-normal hematocrit levels. This condition reflects weak early detection and a lack of awareness regarding the importance of routine health checkups for the elderly. Factors contributing to low knowledge among the elderly include limited examination tools and costs, as well as the suboptimal role of community health posts in disease prevention and control. Therefore, continuous education, strengthening elderly health posts, and the involvement of families and communities are needed to support healthy lifestyles and regular treatment for the elderly. INDEX TERMS elderly, hypertension, hemoglobin, hematocrit.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder associated with a high risk of complications, particularly Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU). Indonesia recorded approximately 20.4 million diabetes cases in 2024, increasing the demand for effective and affordable wound care. Anredera cordifolia and Mentha spicata contain bioactive compounds including flavonoids, saponins, carvone, and phenolic acids with proven antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making them promising natural candidates for diabetic wound management. This study employed a true experimental design using a combined extract of Anredera cordifolia and Mentha spicata leaves at a 1:1 ratio prepared via maceration. Phytochemical screening and pH testing were performed to characterize the extract. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the well diffusion method at concentrations of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%, followed by incubation for 12 and 24 hours and observed. Inhibition zone diameters were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test followed by One-Way ANOVA at α = 0.05. Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins, with all concentrations exhibiting an acidic pH of 4.0. Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus was observed across all concentrations, with 60% established as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Inhibition zone diameters ranged from 14.20 mm to 15.40 mm across observation periods. The combined extract demonstrated intermediate antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus based on CLSI standards, with inhibition zones of 14.20 to 15.40 mm compared to novobiocin (22 mm). No statistically significant difference was observed between concentrations. Further in vivo studies are recommended to evaluate pharmacological effects and optimal concentration in biological systems.
