Abstract

Abstract Organic farming is one approach to achieving sustainable agricultural development and solving environmental problems. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence farmers intentions to adopt organic farming in Lima Puluh Kota Regency. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The location was selected using purposive sampling with the criteria of farmer group members who have obtained organic certification from the West Sumatra Organic Certification Agency (LSO). The sampling technique was conducted using a census, where the entire population became the research sample, consisting of 60 farmers. The research data was sourced from structured interviews using questionnaires, data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and from previous relevant research. Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression analysis using SPPS 27 software. The results of the study show that of the three variables studied, there are two variables that influence the intention to adopt organic farming in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, namely attitude (0.670) and behavioral control (0.261), while subjective norms (0.096) do not influence the intention to adopt organic farming. Strategies to increase farmers intention to adopt organic farming should focus on improving positive attitudes and perceptions of behavioral control among farmers through education, training, and technical empowerment rather than relying solely on social influence or pressure from surrounding norms

Abstract

Ideally, tropical countries have great potential in agricultural resources, but the fact is that the agricultural world in most tropical countries, especially in rural areas, is often hampered in development due to many factors, including an understanding of various problems and governance systems that still do not work optimally. Basically, sustainable agriculture (SA) can be realized optimally if the dimensions, especially socio-economic-environment, are able to run synergistically. Socio-economic functions supported by a conducive environment are key in efforts to realize SA. In this study, we have conducted a Systematic Literature Review which aims to analyze various problems in an effort to improve SA performance based on the synergy of these dimensions, especially for the case of food crop agriculture. We emphasize attention to the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship (SE) which of course demands the synergy of existing key dimensions. In addition, we also conducted a literature review that discusses the phenomenon of multi-helix implementation to improve the performance of a managerial system involving multi-stakeholders. We find that the literature describing multi-helix models (e.g. penta-helix) to support the performance of SA systems is still very rare. Even throughout the search that we have done, there have been no reports that specifically discuss the penta-helix (PH) model, especially in the case of food crop agriculture. The results of this study are expected to be a guide for academics and all interested parties in understanding the SE phenomenon more deeply and the potential for PH implementation, especially for the case of food crop agriculture.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to conceptually and empirically examine the role of two-way communication between extension workers and farmers in accelerating the adoption of shallot innovations. Adoption of agricultural innovations is a strategic element in increasing the productivity and competitiveness of horticultural commodities, but its implementation in various production centers remains suboptimal. This situation indicates that the success of innovation is determined not only by technical excellence but also by the effectiveness of the accompanying communication process. Theoretically, Rogers explains that innovation adoption proceeds through five stages: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. At the persuasion and decision-making stages, two-way communication is crucial because farmers need a dialogue space to understand the benefits, risks, and suitability of the innovation for their farming conditions. This perspective is reinforced by Leeuwis, who asserts that agricultural innovation is the result of social construction through interaction, collective learning, and negotiation of meaning between actors. Thus, a dialogic and participatory extension approach is a prerequisite for effective innovation diffusion. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach through a case study in a shallot production center. The results indicate that innovation communication is relatively effective, particularly through face-to-face interactions such as field demonstrations and group discussions. Farmers who engage in intensive dialogue with extension workers have a more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics of innovations, make faster adoption decisions, and are more consistent in their implementation. Conversely, one-way extension services tend to lead to hesitation and delayed adoption. Communication effectiveness is influenced by the competence of extension workers, farmer characteristics, and the availability of adequate communication channels. Therefore, strengthening participatory communication capacity and developing a dialogic extension system are important strategies for accelerating the sustainable adoption of agricultural innovations.
