Abstract

The poultry industry in Indonesia, especially in Mojokerto Regency, plays a vital role in providing animal protein. This district has great potential with a significant poultry population, including free-range chickens, laying hens, broilers, and muscovy ducks. One of the main challenges faced is feed management, which accounts for 60-70% of total production costs. Rising industrial feed prices and fluctuating dependence on imported feed demand innovative solutions in feed management. This research aims to maximize the use of raw local feed materials and increase poultry farmers' competence in preparing rations in the Mojokerto Regency. This research uses a level III action research design, which includes interviews, observation, and documentation. The sample consisted of 20 breeders selected by purposive sampling. The extension program was developed to increase farmers' knowledge and skills in preparing feed using local ingredients. Program evaluation showed a significant increase in knowledge about feed (33.47%), rearing management (29.13%), and animal health (30.22%). The research showed that this training increased farmers' understanding of local feed management, effective rearing management, and livestock health. Applying local feed ingredients can reduce dependence on imported feed, reduce production costs, and support local food security. Apart from that, this training also positively impacts livestock welfare and the local economy. With an effective extension program, it is hoped that farmers in Mojokerto can increase the independence and sustainability of their livestock businesses. Abstract

ABSTRACT. The quality of post-thawing semen influences the success factor of artificial insemination (AI). Inseminators usually used tap water (28C) to thaw the frozen semen, while Indonesian National Standard used warm water (37C) for 30 seconds. This study aims to determine the effect of thawing duration on the frozen semen quality of Limousin Bull and also to know the best treatment between the five treatments of this experiment. The material used in this study was 50 straws of frozen semen produced by Artificial Insemination Center Singosari. The method was an experiment method with five treatments and ten replications. the variables observed were individual motility, sperm viability, sperm abnormality, concentration, and total motile of sperm. The data obtained were analyzed statistically using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of Randomized Block Design (RBD) and then using Duncan Multiple Range Test if there is a difference. Then using Chi-Square Test for individual motility, concentration, and total motile of sperm and compared with the Indonesian National Standard of frozen semen. The results show that a temperature of 28C with a duration of 60 seconds is highly significant (P0,01) to viability and significant (P0,05) to individual motility and total motile of sperm. While, the concentration and abnormality of sperm give no significant effect (P0,05). In conclusion, the temperature and duration of thawing at 28C for 60 seconds show the best quality of post-thawing semen.

Abstract

The livestock grant program initiated by the Kediri Regency Government aimed to improve livestock numbers and productivity. However, since the funds were first distributed in 2022, the goat population in Puncu Sub-district has shown fluctuating trends, while Kepung Sub- district has experienced a consistent increase. This study seeks to investigate the utilization of grant funds by the farmer groups using case study with explorative approach. Most groups utilized the funds primarily for goat procurement, with a focus on breeding activities, employing farming practices that ranged from traditional to semi-intensive systems. Jawarandu and Peranakan Etawa (PE) were the most preferred goat breeds among the farmer groups. The farming approaches varied across groups, including collective, semi-collective, and individual management, reflecting differences in available resources, organizational maturity, and group objectives. Despite these variations, the majority of groups followed technical guidelines and used the grant funds as initial capital to start or improve their goat farming activities. Key factors supporting effective fund utilization included access to local feed resources, flexible fund usage guidelines, veterinary support, strong member solidarity, and accessible goat marketing channels. On the other hand, challenges included seasonal feed shortages, limited health and reproductive management practices, and difficulties in monitoring goats when housed individually. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers in designing more responsive and sustainable livestock grant programs and may serve as a basis for future research on the programs impacts.
