Abstract

Obesity and overweight have become major global health concerns. In Indonesia, one in five school-aged children is overweight or obese, with increasing rates observed in Bali. Dietary imbalance, sedentary lifestyles, and metabolic dysregulation contribute to abnormal body weight gain. In light of the limitations of synthetic drugs, plant-derived bioactive compounds have attracted attention as safer and multi-target alternatives for regulating body weight. This review aims to synthesise current scientific evidence on the potential of Balinese local plants in regulating body weight, identify their bioactive compounds and underlying mechanisms, and highlight research gaps to guide future nutraceutical development. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, examined literature published between 2020 and 2025 retrieved from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The keywords Balinese plants, body weight, obesity, anti-obesity, plant extract, and bioactive compounds, eight studies met the inclusion criteria. The identified Balinese local plants, including Clitoria ternatea, Zingiber cassumunar, Phyllanthus acidus, Murraya paniculata, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Elaeocarpus grandiflorus, Tagetes erecta, and Lagerstroemia speciosa, demonstrated significant potential in regulating body weight. Their mechanisms included AMPK activation, inhibition of pancreatic lipase, suppression of adipogenesis, induction of thermogenesis, and modulation of antioxidants. Balinese local plants exhibit multi-pathway potential in regulating body weight through metabolic and physiological modulation.

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of global mortality, with hypercholesterolemia representing a major modifiable risk factor. Growing interest has emerged in plant-based strategies, particularly fruit utilization, as sustainable approaches for cholesterol regulation. This study aimed to systematically review the pharmacological mechanisms of fruit-derived secondary metabolites involved in cholesterol lowering and to explore their relevance within plant-based natural resource management. A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines using ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. Evidence from in vivo and in vitro studies demonstrates that various fruits including Gedong Gincu mango, sweet orange, red dragon fruit, buni fruit, Rosa roxburghii, pineapple, Synsepalum dulcificum, mulberry, and Hiyung cayenne pepper contain bioactive secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, phenolics, anthocyanins, carotenoids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, saponins, dietary fiber, and antioxidant enzymes. These compounds exert cholesterol-lowering effects through multiple pharmacological pathways, including inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and absorption, enhancement of bile acid excretion, modulation of lipid metabolism–related gene expression, and reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation. Several fruit-based interventions showed significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL levels, with some demonstrating efficacy comparable to conventional hypolipidemic agents. These findings highlight the potential of fruit-based natural resources as functional, sustainable, and scientifically supported strategies for cholesterol regulation and cardiovascular disease prevention.

Abstract

Introduction: Complications due to diabetes can prevented if patients able to independently handle the disease properly. According several studies, there is a significant relationship between diabetes self-management (DSM) and glycemic control. Diabetes Self Management education (DSME) is the provision of health education by experienced medical personnel about the daily behavior of diabetics such as self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), diet, health care, monitoring of medication and physical activity. Objective: To understood the education response in DM patient using video approached. Methods: The design of this study used a Research and Development approach with a quasi-experimental research design pretest-posttest with control group. The research began with the making of a DSME educational video which was carried out in three stages : exploration, development and validation stages. After the video was produced, further testing was carried out to determine the effectiveness of the video in increasing knowledge of DM. Result: The analysis showed that after the intervention there was an increase in knowledge in the treatment group from 10% to 43.3% while in the control group from 13.3% to 23.3%. Chi square results p value 0.023 (p <0.05), there was a significant difference between the experiment group and the control group after intervention. Conclusion: The DSME through audio-visual media can be more effective in increasing knowledge of diabetes. The use of video as a learning medium would help someone get better information because used of interesting features, authentic and real language. Audio visual as a learning medium made it easier for nurses in diabetes as educators.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health issue in Indonesia. The 2018 Riskesdas reported that 34% of Indonesians suffer from hypertension, with 13.2% occurring in young people. Both genetic factors and unhealthy lifestyles are significant risk factors for hypertension among adolescents. These data indicate that adolescents are at high risk of developing hypertension. Hypertension is a serious condition that requires long-term care due to complications such as stroke, kidney failure, and heart disease. Providing education on hypertension and identifying its risk factors are among the key strategies for prevention in adolescents. This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to provide information about hypertension and identify risk factors among adolescents. The activity was carried out with 50 students from SMA Negeri 1 Abiansemal, Badung Regency, Bali. The method used was PARE (Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Evaluation). The results of the program showed an increase in adolescents’ knowledge about hypertension after receiving education, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicating a z-value of -6.122 and a p-value < 0.001. Identification of risk factors revealed that most adolescents practiced unhealthy lifestyles such as low physical activity, frequent consumption of fast food and fatty foods, insufficient intake of vegetables, caffeine consumption, and smoking. Although only a small proportion of adolescents had a family history of hypertension as the main risk factor, prevention efforts are still necessary through lifestyle modification
