Abstract

The ability to speak English is very important, but it will not be successful without being supported by the ability to listen to understand the verbal language. The poor listening skills of the English Education students at Tadulako University in the final exam of the Listening for General Communication course became the basis for conducting this study. The results of the test showed that around 80% students failed the course with percentage intervals of comprehension levels of 0-39%. Therefore, this study is carried out to specify if using Cognitive-Strategy Based Method and Metacognitive-Strategy Based Method is effective in improving the participants’ listening comprehension as well as to compare the effectiveness of the two strategies. This study applied experimental design involving 80 samples evenly distributed in two classes. One class was instructed using Cognitive strategy, while the other one was taught using Metacognitive strategy. Results of data analysis demonstrated that both the Cognitive and Metacognitive strategies effectively improve the participants’ listening comprehension. There is no significant difference in terms of the effectiveness of both strategies in improving listening skills of the participants. In practice, they support each other resulting in learners better listening comprehension.

Third, the researcher analyzed the text, sentence, or word into cultural content in the text based on theory, and the percentage of the cultural content result was calculated using the percentage formula. The study found 15% of the aesthetic sense, 21% of the sociological sense, 31% of the semantic sense, and 33% of the pragmatic sense. The results show that the highest percentage is the presence of pragmatic sense, while the least is aesthetic sense. The results also show that although the four senses are present, the frequency among the four senses is not balanced. This implies the purpose and emphasis of textbooks in foreign language learning; textbooks emphasize language use more than grammar and structure skills.

Abstract

Grammatical subjects are critical as they warrant text coherence and assist in reader’s understanding of the text. They are of particular importance in a research article introduction to set up the study’s context and relevance within the wider academic discourse. This research aims to disclose what novice writers can learn from professional writers in using Grammatical Subjects (GS). It compared GS realizations and functions in Research Article Introductions (RAIs) employed by both professional and novice writers published in applied linguistic-related Journals. One hundred introduction sections from ten journals were purposely selected. 50 of them were authored by professional writers while the other 50 by novice writers. All of these sections were then examined with the use of Gosden's (1993) analytical framework. Findings revealed that both professional and novice writers employed all types of grammatical subjects. These types encompassed discourse participant, interactive participant, discourse event or process, macro and micro discourse entities, hypothesized viewpoint, and empty real-world theme. Nevertheless, the results also highlighted noticeable differences concerning the realizations of participant viewpoint, interactive discourse entity, empty discourse theme, objective viewpoint, hypothesized entity, empty H and O themes, mental process, real-world entity, and real-world event or process. These findings could help novice writers, especially non-native novice writers, navigate the use of grammatical subjects and become aware of their functions and linguistic features to establish coherent ideas in writing a research article introduction section.

Abstract

Abstract

Textbooks can provide effectiveness and efficiency in the learning process for both teachers and students. Meanwhile, learning styles are individual or student preferences in processing information, which are generally categorized into visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Therefore, textbooks should accommodate learning styles in a balanced way for a more efficient and effective learning process. This study aims to analyze the learning styles accommodated by the textbook 'Bahasa Inggris Work in Progress' for grade ten. The approach used was descriptive quantitative, with research instruments developed based on Priyatna's (2013) and Bobbi & Mike's (2015) theories. Data analysis was conducted by three independent analyzers to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the results. The research findings show that this textbook accommodates visual learning styles by 39%, auditory by 31%, and kinesthetic by 30%. This result shows a relatively balanced distribution in supporting the three types of learning styles. This research highlights the importance of diversifying teaching methods in textbooks to create an inclusive and effective learning environment. As such, it makes a meaningful contribution to the development of textbooks and teaching strategies that are more responsive to students' learning needs.
