Abstract

Oral feedback is the teachers’ response to the students’ performance in the teaching and learning process and it is importantly provided by the teachers. There are many types of oral feedback and each type has a different function. This research aims to analyze the types of oral feedback of the English teachers in the teaching and learning process and the reasons for the teachers in giving oral feedback in the learning process. This research is descriptive. In collecting the data, the teachers were observed and video and audio recording came as tools. To investigate the reason of the teachers, the data collected use Stimulated Recall Interview (SRI). The findings of the research, there are 6 sub-types of oral feedback used by the teachers that are recast, elicitation, clarification request, commenting, repetition, and praise. The second finding about reasons for teacher in giving oral feedback are oral feedback is needed in the class, the teachers’ attention to the students, the teachers want to correct the students’ mistake and their performance, keeping the interaction with the students, motivating the students and appreciating the students’ performance.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat situasi pengajaran listening skill pada mata pelajaran listening untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai masalah-masalah yang dihadapi siswa kelas XI SMA N 10 Padang yang berkaitan dengan materi listening skill dan untuk melihat kebutuhan mereka terhadap materi listening skill dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian deskriptif kuantitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini yang melibatkan seluruh siswa kelas XI SMA N 10 Padang, serta guru Bahasa Inggris kelas XI di SMA N 10 Padang. Angket digunakan dalam penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kebutuhan dan masalah yang dihadapi siswa, sementara untuk mengetahui situasi pengajaran listening dilakukan melalui interview. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian analisa situasi, ditemukan bahwa materi listening skill yang tersedia untuk mendukung kegiatan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris masih minim meskipun terdapat fasilitas yang memadai di SMA N 10. Kemudian, untuk penelitian analisa kebutuhan ditemukan bahwa masih banyak siswa yang mendapat kesulitan dalam menguasai listening skill pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris baik dilihat dari segi input, topic, language dan juga task.Key Words: students‟ needs analysis, situation analysis, listening material

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability at grade 8 of SMP Negeri 26 Padang. This research was quantitative research which used correlational technique design. The sample of the research was 30 students of grade eight selected by clustering sampling. The instruments used in the research were vocabulary test and speaking test. Vocabulary test consisted of 50 questions of multiple choices, and speaking test in the form of role play. The research data were in the form of interpretation of students’ vocabulary and speaking test results, and their correlation. Based on data analysis, it was found that students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability were fair. They were proved by the mean score 65 for vocabulary mastery and 68 for speaking ability. Moreover, there was strong correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and speaking ability. It was shown by the rvalue = 0,703.

Abstract

English Language Teaching Program is one of the programs at UNP that will propose to be certified by ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). One of the requirements proposed by AUN-QA is getting feedback from stakeholders on curriculum. Program Specification is one of one crucial feature in curriculum. This study aimed to find out the students` perception on program specification of English Language Teaching Program based on AUN-QA criteria and to find what improvement needed based on students` perception. This survey study involved students first year, second year, third year and fourth year of ELT Program at UNP. Questionnaire containing 15 items was distributed to 352 students through Google form in order to get the data. Questionnaire consist four scales and then weighing is done in order to convert it into mean score. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. It is found out that the mean score for program identity is very high, 3.22 and it means that students have very good perception toward program identity. The mean score for potential career is also very high, 3.38 and indicates that students have very good perception toward potential career. The main finding shows that students have very good perception toward program specification even though there are few comments given by them who gave negative response on questionnaire. However, there is a little improvement needed based on students` perception. In conclusion, there is slighly improvement needed based on students` perception.Key words: Perception, Program Specification, AUN-QA

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of using e-learning Moodle for homework in improving reading ability of grade X students of SMAN 4 Padang. The study was an experimental research with the population grade X of SMAN 4 Padang in academic year 2012/2013. Sample is class X7 as the experimental group and class X10 as the control group. Post-test was given after treatment in the experimental class. The reading comprehension data of both groups were analyzed using t-test formula. T-test result of the study is 2,833, while the table-t is 1.999. Based on the result of the calculation, it can be concluded that the use of e-learning Moodle for homework is more effective in improving students' reading ability. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat keefektifan penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah terhadap kemampuan membaca siswa di kelas X SMAN 4 Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah eksperimen dengan populasi penelitian siswa kelas X SMAN 4 Padang tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Sampelnya yaitu kelas X7 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan X10 sebagai kelas kontrol. Pos-tes diberikan setelah perlakuan pada kelas eksperimen. Data berupa nilai tes pemahaman membaca oleh kedua kelompok sampel dianalisis menggunakan rumus uji-t. Hasil uji-t penelitian adalah 2,833 sedangkan tabel-t adalah 1,999. Berdasarkan hasil penghitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan e-learning Moodle untuk pekerjaan rumah lebih efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.   Key words: reading ability, homework, E-learning Moodle

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the type of grammatical cohesion and the appropriate and inappropriate use of grammatical cohesion in the narrative texts written by the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Sumatera Barat. This research was a descriptive research with quantitative approach. There were 125 students chosen as the population of this research and the sample were 30 students who selected by using random sampling method. The instrument used in this research was a writing test. To analyze the data the researcher did some steps such tabulating the data, counting the number, interpreting the result, and drawing conclusion. Furthermore, the result of this research shows that the students are able to use four types of grammatical cohesion in their writing. Those four types found are reference, conjunction, ellipsis, and substitution. Reference and conjunction were found most frequent in students’ texts with the percentage of occurring those types were 78% and 20%. In addition, ellipsis and substitution, each of them gives contribution to students’ texts just 1.5 % and 0.6%. Students tend to use the inappropriate personal reference when they try to refer between the subject and object in their sentences. From 1002 times of using grammatical cohesion, the most inappropriate use was located in using reference. The frequency of using the inappropriate reference was 72 times.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh rendahnya motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran listening di SMP Negeri 7 Padang. Hal ini diduga disebabkan karena didalam proses pembelajaran tersebut tidak sesuai dengan kebutuhan mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat gambaran kebutuhan siswa terhadap materi listening dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan menganalisis kebutuhan yang dominan. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan yaitu deskriptif kuantitatif, dimana peneliti menggambarkan data apa adanya yang diambil dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Kuesioner ini diisi oleh 66 siswa yang dijadikan sebagai sampel dari total 264 siswa kelas VIII. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah Persentase. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa membutuhkan semua tipe untuk pembelajaran litening. Tipe tersebut adalah input, content (topics), language and tasks. Selain itu, untuk masing-masing tipe terdapat item yang paling dominant yang dibutuhkan siswa dalam proses pembelajarannya. Untuk input, item dengan nilai tertinggi adalah percakapan antara dua orang atau lebih (3.5). Pada content (topics) adalah ekspresi meminta bantuan (3.54) Sedangkan untuk language, mengenal kata kerja (3.48) adalah item yang paling dominant dan untuk tasks, item yang paling dominant yaitu menentukan respon mana yang paling tepat berdasarkan percakapan dengan pertanyaan yang didengar (3.39). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ini menunjukkan bahwa keempat tipe yang terdapat didalam komponen wants and lacks memang sangat dibutuhkan oleh siswa dalam pembelajaran listening.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi penggunaan strategi belajar reading oleh mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris tingkat dua Universitas Negeri Padang dan melihat hubungan penggunaan strategi belajar reading tersebut dengan reading comprehension mereka. Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian korelasi karena penelitian ini melihat tingkat hubungan antara dua variable yaitu strategi belajar reading siswa dengan reading comprehension mereka. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa tingkat dua Jurusan Bahasa & Sastra Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang. Tekhnik pengambilan sample adalah simple random sampling. Instrument yang digunakan adalah angket untuk melihat strategi belajar reading siswa, dan reading comprehension test untuk melihat reading comprehension siswa, kemudian dianalisis uji normalitas dan uji hipotesis. Dari hasil penelitian didapat strategi belajar reading yang paling banyak dipakai siswa adalah cognitive strategies dan affective strategies. Sedangkan strategi yang paling sedikit digunakan siswa adalah memory strategies. Tingkat hubungan antara strategi belajar reading siswa dengan pemahaman reading mereka sangat positif. Kata Kunci      : Language Learning Strategies in Reading, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

Berbicara merupakan salah satu keahlian yang harus dimiliki oleh siswa dalam tujuan untuk tercapainya keefektifan dalam berkomunikasi. Kemampuan berbicara ini akan sangat berguna bagi siswa sekolah menengah kejuruan yang nantinya akan memasuki dunia bisnis ekonomi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan produk ditinjau dari segi grammar dan knowledge of genre. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif (descriptive research). Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah 62 siswa kelas X jurusan Pemasaran di SMK Negeri 3 Padang. Sampel penelitian didapatkan dengan menggunakan metode purposive sampling dimana peneliti hanya mengambil satu perwakilan kelas sebagai sampel penelitian, yaitu 31 siswa kelas X Pemasaran 2. Data dalam penelitian merupakan hasil tes unjuk kerja kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mendeskripsikan satu dari dua tema produk berbeda yaitu electronic dan kosmetik. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas X Pemasaran 2 SMK Negeri 3 Padang ditinjau dari segi grammar mendapat nilai rata-rata 73.81 dengan kategori sangat baik (very good) dan dari segi knowledge of genre mendapat nilai rata-rata 69.27 dengan kategori sangat baik (very good). Dari hasil penelitian disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan berbicara siswa dilihat dari segi grammar dan knowledge of genre dalam mendeskripsikan produk adalah sangat baik (very good).

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) melihat kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif berdasarkan struktur generik (identifikasi dan deskripsi) dan tata bahasa (simple present tense)(2) melihat permasalahan yang dihadapi siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Data penelitian ini menggunakan testulis dan angket.Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Sampel penelitian adalah siswa kelas 2 SMP yang berjumlah 42 orang. Temuan penelitian yaitu kemampuan siswa dalam menulis identifikasi masih rendah,  menulis deskripsi masih rendah dan dalam menggunakan simple present tense juga rendah   Key words: Ability, writing, descriptive text
