In writing argumentative essay, the writer should mind complete parts of the essay and other linguistic elements. The two important linguistic elements are theme and rheme. Since theme and rheme are crucial in clause structure, thematic development is regarded important in the development of text. There are three patterns of thematic development proposed by Eggins, i.e., theme reiteration, zig-zag pattern, and multiple-theme pattern. This research states its objective as to analyze the thematic development occurred in students’ argumentative essay. The occurrence of thematic development is analyzed and elaborated into the finding and discussion. This research is a qualitative research. There are 13 essays written by students. The essays are chosen randomly to maintain the objectiveness of the analysis. Those essays consist of 323 clauses. They are analyzed based on the concept of thematic development proposed by Eggins. The analysis of thematic development of the clauses shows that theme reiteration emerges as the most preferable thematic development pattern. It can be seen that 217 clauses (67,2%) in students’ essay are in forms of theme reiteration. 84 clauses (26,0%) of the essay apply zig-zag pattern in thematic development. Multiple-theme pattern comes as the least preferred thematic development pattern. It only comes up in 22 clauses (6,8%) out of 323 clauses. It can be concluded that students understand the way to develop their essays by implementing combination of thematic development. It marks a successful phase of students’ writing skill. Nevertheless, students need writing practice intensively to make their writing skill grow better.

The implementation of Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (Freedom to Learn) in Indonesia urges universities to adapt and set changes in learning activities. One of the changes is the implementation of Project-Based Learning to increase students’ activeness and creativity. This research aims to assess students’ creative thinking on the implementation of Project-Based Learning. This research was a descriptive case study with a qualitative approach. Purposive sampling was chosen in this research because the sample was chosen on purpose, i.e., those who joined literary criticism class. There were ten students who played as the subject of the research. It used observation sheets and questionnaires to obtain the data. The data were then analyzed to get reliable results of students’ creative thinking assessment. The result showed that some students (40%) strongly agreed that they faced some difficulties in developing their creative thinking. Most of their problems were about developing ideas into coherence text, structuring or organizing a good text, and choosing appropriate vocabulary to avoid repetition in the text. Students also found that project-based learning allowed them to develop their creative thinking in forms of independence, confidence, creativity, tolerance, and leadership. Regarding the result, it can be concluded that project-based learning is proven to be beneficial in developing students’ creative thinking, though they find some obstacles during the process.

English language teaching (ELT) serves as a tool to teach students how to communicate in workplace. Character education taught in ELT can influence some of the ways students live in society, in terms of ethics, philosophy and principles. Moral education, as a part of character education, can be included in language learning and in character development in three important ways: integrated into school practice with an emphasis on literacy, socialized by moral content, and applied to course materials. This research provides description on developing human resources quality through character education. There are 38 respondents in this research, 36 students and 2 lecturers. They are chosen to obtain more objective data. The implementation of character education in teaching process happens from the planning to evaluating process. In planning, it shows that most students already know character education and its importance in higher education. In enacting process, most students implement moral values in their daily life. It makes their soft skill quality increase, both in personal and professional qualities. Last process is evaluating. In this process, some students think that the lecturers always help them internalize character education by implicitly including it in the problem sheet and the scoring rubrics.

This analysis does not only shed light on the website's organization, but also offers insights into the genre conventions of tourism websites in general. This study uses a descriptive qualitative study focusing on text organization analysis of Mandalika tourism website. There are five steps in analyzing the data. The result shows that Mandalika Tourism Website fits within the advertisement genre, as its primary aim is to promote tourism destinations in Mandalika. However, it only employs seven of these moves, and their application is not strictly sequential. Each move structure employed in the website serves a distinct function and plays a critical role in the overall effectiveness of the tourism website as an advertisement medium. The move structures used can be categorized into three primary functions: informative, persuasive, and reminding. It can be said that conducting analysis of textual strategies in the website helps attracting and increasing tourism occupancy in Mandalika.

Sustainable tourism is the most suitable concept to protect Indonesian realms and cultural diversity besides the tourist destination’s development. One of the websites that displays sustainable tourism is geoparkkebumen.id. This research aims to describe the verbal and visual modes on the homepage display of the website. It is qualitative research with purposive sampling in getting the data. The data is analyzed using Kress & van Leeuwen’s, Lamb’s, and Peirce’s theories. The result of the analysis shows that the website uses some figurative language as the verbal modes. Assonance appears as the most used figurative language. It is chosen to make the website more persuasive and memorable for the readers. Rhetorical question does not appear on the website. The website avoids using it to maintain clarity, objectivity, and an authoritative tone, ensuring readers get straightforward information. The analysis of visual mode reveals that images on the website contain high angle, eye-level angle, and oblique angle. These angles enhance visual storytelling, complementing verbal descriptions to engage readers effectively. Future researchers can involve different actual issues to enrich multimodal discourse analysis.

This paper investigates the representation of gender roles in two English textbooks for senior high school students. Gender related images and texts are taken as the data. The data were analysed using Bruggeilles and Cromer’s (2009) framework for gender typical roles. Findings reveal that in both textbooks, males have the roles as leaders in domestic, social, and occupational sphere while females are considered as keepers, protectors, and caretakers in those spheres.

Gender issues are not unfamiliar around Indonesian people. However, it does not mean that everyone in Indonesia understands the issues. For this problem, an understanding about gender issues is needed and the target of this community service program is students of SMAN 5 Purwokerto. The SMAN 5 Purwokerto students are the target for this activity as the method that is used for this community service is photovoice, a literacy method that uses photo and caption which are suitable for their age. This community service aims at raising understanding and awareness about gender issues to the young generation to prevent gender discrepancy. By giving materials about gender issues, writing captions, photography training, and mentoring, the result of this program is the SMAN 5 Purwokerto students' understanding regarding gender issues. This result is proven by their answers on pretest and post-test which were given before and after the program. The pretest results showed that there were some students who did not understand the terms and descriptions related to gender issues (20%), while the post-test results showed that all students could provide and explain photovoice with gender issues (100%). This shows that the photovoice activity was successful in improving students' understanding of gender issues.
