Abstract

Processing plastic waste, especially Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE), is an environmental problem because it is difficult to decompose. One method of processing plastic waste is pyrolysis, which converts plastic into liquid fuels such as diesel. However, pyrolyzed diesel still contains impurities, such as sulfur, chlorine, and hydrocarbon compounds, which affect fuel quality, including acid number and viscosity. This study aims to determine the adsorbent characteristics of natural zeolite (ZA), chemically-physical activation zeolite (ZKF), and physico-chemical activation zeolite (ZFK), and to assess their effectiveness in improving the quality of diesel fuel from the pyrolysis of plastic waste. The test of zeolite as an adsorbent was conducted by measuring water and ash content and by characterizing it using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and a Gas Sorption Analyzer (GSA). FTIR results showed spectral changes indicative of the loss of OH groups and revealed the main functional groups of the activated zeolites. XRF results show that ZKF and ZFK have increased silica (SiO₂) content from 81.85% to 82.19% and 82.26%, and decreased iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) content from 0.94% to 0.63% and 0.62%. GSA analysis showed increases in the surface areas of ZKF and ZFK from 11.49 m²/g to 34.06 m²/g and 19.78 m²/g, respectively. Processing of pyrolyzed diesel using ZKF and ZFK showed a decrease in acid number from 1.03 mg NaOH/g to 0.25 mg NaOH/g and 0.20 mg NaOH/g, a reduction in viscosity from 5.45 cSt to 5.19 cSt and 5.13 cSt. The most effective adsorbent for reducing acid number and viscosity is ZFK, with a surface area of 19.78 m2/g, an average pore diameter of 5.99 nm, and optimal adsorption conditions at a stirring time of 4 minutes with an adsorbent mass of 1.5 grams in 50 mL of pyrolyzed diesel.

Abstract

The need for environmentally responsible extraction techniques has driven the development of green alternatives to conventional organic solvents. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offer a sustainable option due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, and simple preparation. In this study, a DES composed of glycine, glycerol, and water (1:11:15 molar ratio) was used as a green extraction medium to isolate bioactive compounds from the red algae (Eucheuma cottonii), providing an eco-friendly solution for efficient marine bioresource utilization. This final product offers a simplified process, as the resulting extract requires no further separation prior to application. The DES exhibited favourable physicochemical properties, including a pH of 5, density of 1300.14 kg/m³, viscosity of 0.0198 Pa·s, and a freezing point below 263.15 K. Phytochemical screening of the DES-based extract confirmed the presence of phenolic and terpenoid compounds. The extract was directly incorporated into sunscreen lotion formulations at concentrations ranging from 0 to 15% (w/w). All formulations showed good homogeneity, with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) value of 8.37 observed in the lotion containing 15% red algae extract. This research shows the success of extracting natural anti-UV ingredients in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner.

Abstract

Mackerel fish bones are commonly discarded as waste and may contribute to environmental pollution. This study aimed to extract gelatin from mackerel fish bones and evaluate its use as a coagulant aid with alum for the removal of organic matter and total suspended solids (TSS) from peat water. Gelatin was extracted and its functional groups were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Treatment performance was evaluated through jar test experiments by varying Gelatin dosage (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 g/L) and pH (4–8). Organic matter concentration was determined using the permanganometric titration method, while TSS was measured using the nephelometric method. The gelatin yield was 2.45%, and FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of amide functional groups, indicated by N–H stretching at 3353 cm⁻¹. The addition of gelatin enhanced alum performance, with optimal conditions at a dosage of 8 g/L and pH 7, achieving removal efficiencies of 89.3% for organic matter and 87.8% for TSS with a sedimentation time of 15 minutes. These findings demonstrate the potential of fish bone–derived gelatin as an effective and sustainable coagulant aid for peat water treatment.

Abstract

Nephelium lappaceum L. (Rambutan) is a renowned seasonal fruit in Southeast Asia and has been cultivated for centuries in tropical regions. Research on the phytochemicals of this plant are scarce. Rambutan seeds are known to contain phenolics and flavonoids as the primary constituents. Unfortunately, the flavonoid structures in rambutan seeds remain unexamined. This study presents the extraction and structural elucidation of a flavonoid glycoside from the ethyl acetate fraction of N. Lappaceum seeds. Methanol crude extract of N. Lappaceum seeds was acquired through maceration and subsequently partitioned between n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Various chromatographic methods, such as vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), column chromatography (CC), and preparative thin-layer chromatography (PTLC), were employed on the ethyl acetate fraction to obtain compound 1. Phytochemical assays employing 10% NaOH, Shinoda, and 5% FeCl3 on compound 1 demonstrated the presence of a flavonoid. According to the NMR data (1D and 2D) and HRTOF-MS-ES, compound 1 was characterised as the flavonoid glycoside, kaempferol-7-O-α-rhamnose or α-rhamnoisorobin.

Abstract

Background: Sunscreen protects the skin against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, particularly UVB, which is a major contributor to skin damage. Brown algae (Sargassum sp.) are rich in phenolic antioxidant compounds with potential as natural sunscreen agents. However, research on the incorporation of ethanolic extracts of Sargassum sp. into topical cream formulations and on the evaluation of both their photoprotective activity and formulation stability remains limited. This study therefore offers a fresh perspective on the dual role of brown algae extracts as natural sunscreen ingredients and stabilizing components in cosmetic preparations. Objective: This study aims to develop a cream formulation containing the ethanolic extract of Sargassum sp. and to evaluate its sunscreen activity.Method: The extract was obtained by maceration using 96% ethanol and subsequently subjected to phytochemical analysis. Cream formulations were prepared with six concentrations of the extract (0, 0.07, 0.13, 0.20, 0.27, and 0.43%) and evaluated for homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and in vitro Sun Protection Factor (SPF) using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results: All cream formulations were stable, homogeneous, and exhibited pH values between 4.7 and 5.8, consistent with SNI 16-4399-1996 standards. The highest SPF value was observed in the 0.43% formulation, reaching 6.234 ± 0.503, which is categorized as extra protection. The sunscreen activity is attributed to phenolic compounds in the extract, which possess both antioxidant properties and UV-absorbing capacity. Conclusion: Sunscreen cream formulations containing the ethanolic extract of Sargassum sp. met the required physical stability standards. SPF testing revealed that the 0.43% extract formulation (KTS5) produced the highest SPF value, 6.234 ± 0.503, which is classified as extra protection and indicates optimal sunscreen activity.
