Abstract

Broad-minded character is understood as a person’s perspective to view themselves comprehensively, to be responsive, to make decisions, and to behave positively. The low reading interest among children and the prevalence of bullying cases illustrated a lack of broad-minded character. This study aimed to develop a textbook on road civilization based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) to foster broad-minded character. This research used the Research & Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model. Ten certified teachers were involved in the needs analysis, five teachers and five experts acted as expert judges and eight children participated as limited trial subjects. The study results showed that (1) the textbook on road civilization based on Project-Based Learning to foster broad-minded character was developed following the ADDIE steps; (2) the quality of the book fell under the "Very Good" category (3.83 on a scale of 1–4) and did not require revisions; (3) the implementation of the textbook on home civilization based on Project-Based Learning significantly influenced broad-minded character (p < 0.05) with a large effect size (r = 0.99), equivalent to 98%. The effectiveness level was categorized as "High" (N-gain score of 84.66%). Based on the research findings, the development of the textbook on road civilization based on PjBL significantly fostered children’s broad-minded character.

Abstract

The low level of self-control among elementary school students poses a fundamental challenge in character education, requiring innovative pedagogical interventions. This study aims to develop the Bridge Civilization textbook based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) as a strategic medium to strengthen students’ self-control character. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach, the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) was applied. The study involved two groups: an experimental group (n = 24) applying the PjBL model and a control group (n = 25) using the lecture method. Research instruments included summative tests (pretest–posttest) for both groups and formative tests for the experimental group only. Expert validation indicated the textbook achieved a “very good” rating (M = 3.78) with no revisions required. The Mann–Whitney U test showed a significant difference in self-control between the control (15,20%) and experimental groups (45.00%), with a large effect size (r = 0.772). N-gain scores indicated low effectiveness for the control (23.85%) and moderate for the experimental group (66.56%). Interrater reliability testing yielded an average α = 0.760 (high category). These findings confirm that the PjBL-based textbook is effective in enhancing elementary school students’ self-control character.

Abstract

The background to this community service activity began with the discovery of the low writing skills of class I students at Kanisius Sorowajan Elementary School. The aim of this activity was to improve initial writing skills by applying the Montessori method. Initial writing skills refered to a person's basic ability to organize and express ideas, ideas, or information in writing including an understanding of written structure, grammar, spelling, and the ability to convey messages clearly. This activity used the Participatory Learning and Action method which included the teacher and 17 students. The results showed, 1) an increase in children's initial writing skills scored of 77.47% which included letter writing, cohesiveness, accuracy, completeness and proportionality; 2) training using the Montessori method had a significant effect on children's initial writing skills (p < 0.05) which was included in the large effect category (r = 62.39%); and 3) the effectiveness of implementing the Montessori method was in the large category (n-gain score = 89.24%).
