Abstract

Background & Objective: Anxiety is one of the most common psychological problems experienced by the elderly, influenced by physical decline, chronic illness, and reduced social support. Spiritual interventions, such as  dhikr  therapy,  are  increasingly  considered  as complementary strategies to improve psychological well-being. This study aims to systematically review the effectiveness of dhikr therapy as a non-pharmacological intervention in reducing anxiety among the elderly. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA approach. Articles were searched through Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Publish or Perish with the keywords “dzikir therapy,” “elderly,” and “anxiety reduction.” Inclusion criteria were journal articles in English or Indonesian, published in the last five years, with clear methodology. Fourteen studies were included in the analysis. Result: Most studies employed quasi-experimental and pre–posttest designs with samples ranging from 10 to 50 elderly participants. The findings consistently demonstrated that dhikr therapy effectively reduced anxiety levels, improved psychological well-being, self-esteem, sleep quality, and overall quality of life. In addition, dhikr therapy contributed to better blood pressure control and reduced depression in elderly with comorbid conditions. Conclusion: Dhikr therapy is an effective, simple, and low-cost non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety and enhance mental health among the elderly. Further studies with larger sample sizes, randomized controlled designs, and physiological measurements are recommended to strengthen the evidence base.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Older adults often experience psychological and physiological changes that lead to stress and sleep disorders such as insomnia. Mindfulness and meditation therapy have been widely applied as non-pharmacological interventions to improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety among elderly populations. This literature review aims to analyze and synthesize evidence from Indonesian studies regarding the effectiveness of meditation and mindfulness therapy in reducing stress and insomnia in older adults. Method: A literature review was conducted using Google Scholar, Garuda, and Neliti databases for Indonesian studies published from 2019–2025. Eighteen eligible articles were analyzed, including three local studies by Bachtiar Safrudin focusing on yoga, physical activity, and elderly exercise as relaxation interventions. Result: Most studies demonstrated that meditation and mindfulness significantly reduce stress and improve sleep quality in the elderly. Local findings also supported these effects through yoga and relaxation exercises. Conclusion: Meditation and mindfulness are effective, simple, and safe interventions that can be integrated into community-based nursing programs to enhance elderly mental health.

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) is a key strategy in public health promotion aimed at improving quality of life through behavioral change. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the implementation of PHBS has not yet been fully integrated into daily life, highlighting the need for effective educational approaches. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of various educational media on PHBS behavior in communities through a systematic literature review. Articles were collected from the Garuda and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 2021 to 2025. The selection process followed PRISMA guidelines and resulted in eight articles that were analyzed based on study design, type of educational media, and intervention outcomes. The findings indicate that educational media such as videos, social media, posters, leaflets, educational games, lectures, and discussions contribute to improving knowledge, attitudes, and PHBS practices. Social media and videos demonstrate strong potential for broad and repeated information dissemination, while print media and direct methods are more suitable for populations less familiar with technology. These findings suggest that educational media are an effective and relevant approach to enhancing PHBS implementation in the community.

Abstract

Therapeutic communication plays an important role in improving the welfare of the elderly, especially in reducing anxiety and depression and improving their social interactions. This study aims to analyze effective therapeutic communication strategies to strengthen interactions with the elderly. The method used is a systematic literature review with the PRISMA approach, which includes 10 relevant articles from various scientific sources. The results of the study indicate that strategies such as a personal approach, questioning and listening techniques, and empowerment of families and health cadres, contribute to the effectiveness of communication with the elderly. However, there are several challenges faced, such as hearing loss, lack of knowledge from families, and limited health workers. Therefore, therapeutic communication training for health workers and education for families are needed to improve the quality of interactions with the elderly. With the implementation of appropriate therapeutic communication, it is hoped that the elderly can feel better emotional support and improve their quality of life.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major global health problem with increasing prevalence among older adults and requires comprehensive management beyond pharmacological treatment. From a gerontic nursing perspective, strengthening self-care, including personal hygiene, is essential to prevent complications and improve health outcomes. However, age-related cognitive and sensory changes often reduce the effectiveness of conventional health education. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based educational video in improving personal hygiene knowledge among older adults with hypertension. A quantitative pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted among 38 adults aged ≥60 years recruited through purposive sampling at a public health center in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Knowledge was assessed using a validated and reliable structured questionnaire before and after participants viewed a seven-minute educational video developed according to gerontic nursing principles. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Personal hygiene knowledge improved significantly following the intervention. Before the intervention, most participants had good or moderate knowledge, whereas after the intervention all participants achieved a good level of knowledge, with a statistically significant improvement (p < 0.001). These findings demonstrate that community-based educational videos are an effective, practical, and age-appropriate strategy for improving personal hygiene knowledge among older adults with hypertension and support their integration into promotive and preventive gerontic nursing services in primary health care and community settings.
