Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to investigate the factors influencing students? English listening comprehension on the eleventh grade students of SMAN 10 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015.The writer applied a case study in this research. The samples of this research are 60 students (26 females and 34 males) out of 217 students as population, taken randomly from 6 classes (3 sciene classes and 3 social classes). The data was collected by using questionnaire, and analyzed by using SPSS. The result of this research showed that the main factor influencing students? English listening comprehension was vocabulary. The lack of vocabulary caused other problems, such as hard to follow the speed of speaker, not ready to listen the conversation, vocabulary that speaker used was hard, hard to differentiate the homophone words, not interested to listen to English conversation, hard to get the information from the speaker, the topic of conversation felt hard and dislike of the topic of conversation. Keywords: Listening Comprehension, Case Study Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui factor ? factor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman mendengar Bahasa Inggris Siswa kelas 11 SMAN 10 Pontianak pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Peneliti menerapkan jenis penelitian studi kasus. Sampel penelitian ini 60 siswa (26 laki ? laki ? dan 34 perempuan) dahri total populasi 217 siswa, yang diambil secara acak dari 6 kelas (3 kelas IA dan 3 Kelas IS). Data diperoleh melalui kuesioner dan dianalisis menggunakan SPSS.  Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa factor utama yang mempengaruhi kemampuan mendengar Bahasa Inggris siswa adalah kosakata. Kurangnya kosakata mengakibatkan masalah lainnya seperti, kesulitan mengikuti kecepatan pembicara, ketidaksiapan mendengar percakapan, kosakata sulit yang digunakan pembicara, kesulitan membedakan kata yang bersifat homofon, ketidaktertarikan mendengar dalam Bahasa Inggris, kesulitan memperoleh informasi dari pembicara, topic pembicaraan terasa berat dan ketidaktertarikan terhadap topic pembicaraan. Abstract

 ABSTRACTThis thesis is a study Drilling Vocabulary by Using Jumbled Letter to the Class VII Students of SMP Negeri 02 Semparuk, Sambas Regency, in Academic Year 2013. The purpose of the research is to find out how effective the scrambled letters is minimize the difficultes in vocabulary accurately to Class VII C Students of SMP Negeri 02 Semparuk, Sambas Regency, in Academic Year 2013/2014.The method of this research is class room action research method. The sample of his research is Class VII C Students of SMP Negeri 02 Semparuk, Sambas Regency, in Academnic Year 2013/2014 wich consisted of 30 students. The data of this research were collected by measurement technique. The measurement technique was employed to measure the students’ achievement and it is done trough written tes.The findings of this research analyzed by the result of the students’ score  in the first cycle and second cycle. The result of the research was the total score of first cycle = 136 with mean score (4.86) it is qualified “average to good”. The mean score of posttest (7.25) is bigger than the mean score of pretest (4.86), with score 2.39. the conclusion of this research was the drilling vocabulary through jumbled letters was effective to be applied in improving the students’ achievement in spelling. Key Words: Teaching Speaking, Through Retelling, Narrative Text

Abstract

 AbstrackThe objective of this reserach is to study how the student-generated text of Language Experience Approach (LEA) develops recount text writing ability of  Year 11 students of SMK PGRI Pontianak in academic year of 2015/2016 in terms of vocabulary, sentence fluency, and ideas. This research is a Classroom Action research. The sample is 18 students of Year 11 ofAudio-Visual Technique Class of SMK PGRI Pontianak. The results showed that  student-generated text of LEA developed recount text writing ability of  the students. Students’ mean score is increased from non-proficient performance level to proficient performance level. It is particularly developed  vocabulary, sentence fluency, and conceptual creativity in writing. Besides, it also helped in strengthening speaking, listening, and reading skills, as students had to volunteer information verbally or dictate verbal sentences to the teacher, do some extended writing of the dictated account, listen to teacher reading the text, read and comprehend the text, and write a recount text with their own words. Student-generated text (dictated account) of Language Experience Approach (LEA)is hereby seen as an effective strategy to teach not only recount text writing, but also the other 3 skills of English language. To conclude, student-generated text of Language Experience Approach (LEA) is an alternative strategy that can develop students’ recount text writing ability in many areas, at the same time strengthen speaking, listening, and  reading skills. Key Word: Recount Text, Teaching Writing, Student-Generated Text, Language Experience Approach, Classroom Action Research

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at designing Computer-Based Summative Test software as a tool to support English Test. To make sure that the learning objectives are fulfilled, the testing materials should be in line with the curriculum and learners’ needs. This study was attempted to design reading testing software based on teachers’ and students’ needs. The software was designed because it can solve the testing problems.  In this research, the researcher uses ADDIE approach where the participants are the teachers and the eleventh grade students of SMA Sentosa Pemangkat. This study found that students’ summative tests need a new testing system which can randomize test items and fasten test result publishing. The result showed that the software can be used by the teacher and students as a software to test students’ reading achievement in summative test. The researcher suggests that the teachers use this software to help them in testing. Keywords: Computer-Based Summative Test, ADDIE Approach   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendesain program Ujian Sumatif berbasis komputer sebagai sebuah perangkat untuk mendukung Ujian Bahasa Inggris. Untuk memastikan bahwa tujuan pembelajaran dapat tercapai, maka bahan ujian harus sesuai dengan kurikulum dan kebutuhan siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merancang program ujian membaca berdasarkan kebutuhan guru dan kebutuhan siswa. Program ini dirancang karena ia bisa menyelesaiakn masalah dalam ujian. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan ADDIE dimana pesertanya adalah guru dan siswa kelas XI di SMA Sentosa Pemangkat. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa ujian sumatif memerlukan sebuah sistem yang dapat mengacak butir soal dan mempercepat pengumuman hasil ujian. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa program tersebut dapat digunakan oleh guru dan siswa sebagai sebuah program untuk menguji pencapaian kemampuan membaca siswa di ujian sumatif. Peneliti menyarankan agar guru menggunakan program ini untuk membantu mereka dalam ujian. Kata kunci: Ujian Sumatif Berbasis Computer, Pendekatan ADDIE

Abstract

Abstract : Role play in Video Modelled Conversation are proposed in the teaching of speaking not only because of their appealing forms but also due to their salient features, as multimedia to improve the students? motivation in speaking. This study investigated students? motivation by using Dornyei?s framework of language learning motivation. A questionnaire and a semi-structured interview were also employed as a means of collecting the data through a classroom action research. The procedures included planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The results showed that teaching speaking using Role Play in Video Modelled Conversations could successfully improve students motivation in speaking. They find this technology can enhance their English learning motivation and effectively boost their English speaking ability.   Keywords : motivation, Role Play, Video Modelled Conversation, framework.     Abstrak : Role Play didalam Video Modelled Conversation dirancang dalam pengajaran speaking bukan saja karena bentuknya yang menarik tetapi juga karena fitur-fiturnya yang menggugah sebagai multimedia untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam berbicara. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki motivasi siswa dengan menggunakan kerangka motivasi belajar bahasa yang dikembangkan oleh Dornyei. Angket dan wawancara cara semi terstruktur juga digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk pengumpulan data melalui penelitian tindakan kelas. Prosedur penelitian meliputi : perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan dan refleksi. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa pengajaran speaking menggunakan Role Play dalam Video Modelled Conversation telah berhasil meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam berbicara. Mereka menemukan bahwa teknologi ini dapat memacu motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris dan secara efektif meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris mereka.   Kata Kunci : motivasi, bermain peran, percakapan penutur asli di video, kerangka.

Abstract

AbstractTextbook selection process takes a crucial part in teaching and learning process. The textbook affects the teaching and learning process, in turn will influence the students’ competencies. Moreover English subject is the only way for the students to learn English, since English is a foreign language which means, students do not use it fluently and intensively. So, textbook determines the result of the teaching and learning process itself. This study presents the textbook selection process and the teacher’s considerations when selecting the textbook. This is a case study research. The participant in this study was an English teacher of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Swasta (MTs) Aswaja Pontanak, one of private Islamic junior high school in Pontianak. The data of this study were collected through observation method and interviews. The research findings revealed that one aspect, besides the teacher, actually took a part and influenced the textbook selection process. This aspect is the involvment of the higher authority of the school. Also, there were some coniderations that the teacher has in selecting the textbook. These consderations are the content of the textbook must follow the most recent curriculum, and the textbook design. Keywords: English Textbook, Textbook Selection, Teacher’s Consideration

Abstract

AbstractThis research was done to know how the use of word wall as the media can improve students’ vocabulary on descriptive text especially on adjective words. This research is designed as a classroom action research on the second grade students of SMP LKIA Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The researcher used observation checklist, field notes, and test to collect data. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result showed that the students’ vocabulary in each cycles has improved during their discussion and performance in applying each steps of word wall. The students discussed in a group in selecting the words, pictures were also functioned to help them finding the meaning of the words. The students interacted with each other to finish their work sheet. They gave and asked for opinions to each other in the process of selecting the words. The teacher also took a role in that process. Although, some students did not speak up, they still paid attention to their groups. When they performed their word wall, each student had their roles. The improvement of students’ vocabulary is also shown by mean score of the students’ tests. In the first cycle, the students’ mean score was 50.45 it increased to 76.02 in the second cycle. In conclusion, the findings confirmed that the use of word wall as a media can improve students’ vocabulary on descriptive text. Key words: Descriptive text, Vocabulary, Word wall

Abstract

Abstract This research was aimed at discovering the effect of Picture Word Inductive Model on students’ vocabulary achievement on the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. This research was a pre experimental research with one group pre-test post-test design. The research population was 212 students from 5 classes and by using cluster random sampling, the researcher chose class VII A  that consisted of 35 students as the sample of the research. The data were gained from pre-test and post-test and analyzed by using t-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 58.14 which classified as “poor to average” and the mean score of post-test was 77.86 which classified as “average to good”. The finding showed that the t-test was 7.85. The t table with degree of freedom (df) 34 and significance level at 0.025 was 3.0019. Based on the data analysis above, the t-test was higher than the ttable (7.85 > 3.0019) which means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Moreover, the effect size was 1.78, that result was more than 1.00 (ES > 1.00) which is categorized as strong effect. To sum up, the use of Picture Word Inductive Model in teaching vocabulary give a strong significant effect to improve students’ vocabulary achievement. Keywords: Picture Word Inductive Model, Teaching Vocabulary, Vocabulary Achievement

Abstract

AbstractThis research is aimed at enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery of Descriptive Text at 8F class of SMPN 7 Sungai Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018. This research used Word Search Game as technique in teaching vocabulary. This research was done by giving students the test each cycle. The method of this research was a classroom action research, which consisted of 3 cycles. The teaching media of this research was pictures which are to train the students to enhance and memorize the words easily. The subject of this research was students of 8F class of SMPN 7 Sungai Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018. The research was conducted to solve the problem encountered by the students in vocabulary mastery. The technique of data collecting for this research was observation and test. The tools of data collecting were observation checklist, field note and measurement test. The result of this research showed that Word Search Game enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery in descriptive text. The students’ individual score in vocabulary also improved in teaching learning process. From this result, it can be concluded that students’ vocabulary mastery taught by Word Search Game had improved.
