Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to know whether the English Zone in English Language International Course can motivate students to speak English or not. This research was conducted to the students of English Language International Course Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. Descriptive method was applied in this research. The subjects of this research were the eight students of English for Youth level 3 in speaking class at English Language International Course. The research applied observation technique, as well as indirect communication technique. The tools of collecting data were observation checklist and questionnaire guide. Gardner Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) was used as the primary tool of data collection. Based on the observation data, the students motivated to speak. The findings showed that 76.37% students motivated to speak in English zone in the category high. Among to the instrumental motivation, intrinsic motivation, integrative motivation, extrinsic motivation, and resultative motivation, the motivation mostly owned by the students was instrumental motivation which scored 43.21% in the category moderate. The conclusion, English zone can motivate students in English for Youth level 3 of English Language Internasional Course in academic year 2014/2015 to speak. Key words: Motivation, English Zone, Speaking Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah Zona Bahasa Inggris di English Language International Course dapat memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara atau tidak. Penelitian ini dilakukan terhadap siswa di English Language International Course Pontianak pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah delapan siswa dari English for Youth level 3 di English Language International Course. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik observasi, serta teknik komunikasi tidak langsung. Alat pengumpulan data adalah observasi checklist dan kuesioner. Gardner Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) telah digunakan sebagai alat utama pengumpulan data. Berdasarkan data yang di dapat saat observasi, para siswa termotivasi untuk berbicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 76,37% siswa termotivasi untuk berbicara dalam zona Bahasa Inggris dalam kategori tinggi. Di antara motivasi instrumental, motivasi intrinsik, motivasi integratif, motivasi ekstrinsik, dan motivasi resultative, sebagian besar yang dimiliki oleh siswa adalah motivasi instrumental yang mencetak 43,21% dalam kategori sedang. Kesimpulannya, zona Bahasa Inggris dapat memotivasi siswa dalam bahasa Inggris untuk English for Youth level 3 dalam English Language International Course pada tahun akademik 2014/2015 untuk berbicara. Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at describing how the Inductive method improvesstudents’ mastery on the use simple past tense on the eighth grade students ofSMP N 1 Sungai Raya in academic year 2017/2018. Based on the observations,the students had problems on the use of simple past tense. The research wasconducted Class Room Action Research in three cycles. The inductive methodwas selected to solve the problem. There are four steps in using inductivemethod. The students were giving a set of examples; generalize a grammaticalrule, test the grammatical rule against in new sentences and revise thegrammatical rule. The researcher used observation and students’ writingassessment to collect the data. The researcher also used observation checklist,field note and students’ assessment to get the research finding. The finding ofthis research indicated that the inductive method was successful. It showed inthe first step the students know about tenses is used in the sentences. Theyknow how to formulate the rule by analyzing the example in second step. Thirdsteps students were able to write simple pas tense correctly and the last stepsstudents could analyze the rule in the sentence. There were thirty four of thirtysix students already achieved the target score seventy five based on KKM. Itmeans 94 % students could achieve the standard score. In conclusion, InductiveMethod improved students’ mastery on the use simple past tense. Key words: Mastery, simple past tense, Inductive Method.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of conducting this research is to improve students’ speaking ability in giving opinion and responding to another’s opinion through debate. The methodology of this research is a classroom action research which consisted of 3 cycles. The subject of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 7 Sungai Raya, B class which consists of 26 students. To collect the data, the researcher used observation checklist and field notes. Through observation checklist the researcher observed students’ activity in the classroom and by using field notes the researcher reflected the problem found.  Based on the research findings, debate technique which was applied to the subjects of research showed the improvement of students’ speaking ability. Based on the result of the researcher’s observation using observation checklist and form of field notes, it can be seen that students’ speaking ability in giving opinion and responding to another’s opinion have been improved. The percentage of students’ activity in the classroom when debate, in the first cycle was 57%, in the second cycle was 67% and the third cycle was 76%. It indicated that debate technique had improved students’ speaking ability in giving opinion and responding to another’s opinion. Key words: Speaking Ability, Debate Technique, Classroom Action Research Abstrak: Tujuan dari pelaksanaan penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mengungkapkan pendapat dan menganggapi pendapat yang lainnya melalui debat. Metode yang digunakan di penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Subjek penelitian adalah murid kelas 8 dari SMPN 7 Sungai Raya, kelas B yang terdiri dari 26 murid. Peneliti menggunakan observasi ceklis dan field note. Melalui obsevasi ceklist peneliti mengamati kegiatan murid di dalam kelas dan peneliti merefleksi masalah yang ditemukan menggunakan field note. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, teknik debat yang diterapkan kepada subjek penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan bicara murid dalam memberikan pendapat dan menanggapi pendapat yang lain. Berdasarkan observasi peneliti dapat terlihat bahwa kemampuan murid dalam mengungkapkan pendapat dan menanggapi pendapat telah meningkat. Persentase dari kegiatan siswa di dalam kelas ketika debat, untuk cycle pertama adalah 57%, untuk cycle kedua adalah 67% dan cycle ketiga dalah 76%. Hasil tersebut membuktikan bahwa debat dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam mengungkapkan pendapat dan menanggapi pendapat.   Kata kunci: Kemampuan Berbicara, Teknik Debat, Penelitian Tindakan Kelas

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah strategi REAP memberikan hasil belajar yang berbeda atau tidak dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca pada teks naratif untuk  siswa kelas  sebelas MAN Mempawah. Penelitian ini juga dilakukan untuk mengetahui keefektifan penerapan strategi REAP untuk pengajaran pemahaman membaca. Experimen semu dengan rancangan kelompok non-equivalent digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sample penelitian ini adalah siswa dari kelas XI Ilmu Sosial 1 sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan  siswa dari kelas XI Ilmu Sosial 2 sebagai kelompok kontrol. Hasil analisis data menunjukan bahwa hasil belajar siswa dalam pemahaman membaca berbeda setelah menerapkan strategi REAP. Hal ini di tunjukan oleh selisih skor antara pretest and posttest pada kelompok eksperimen, yaitu sebesar (11.59), lebih tinggi dari selisih skor antara pretest dan posttest pada kelompok kontrol, yaitu sebesar (6.37). Kefektifan strategi ini juga ditunjukan oleh efek size formula ( 0.98, yang tergolong mempunyai efek yang sedang. Kata Kunci : Membaca, Teks Naratif, Strategi REAP Abstract: This research aims to find out whether REAP strategy gives difference learning achievement or not for teaching reading comprehension on narrative text to the eleventh grade students of MAN Mempawah. It was also to know the effectiveness of using REAP Strategy for teaching reading comprehension. A quasi experimental with non-equivalent group design is used. The samples of this research were students of XI Social Sciences class 1 as experimental group and others of XI Social Sciences class 2 as the control group.  The result of data analysis showed that the students’ achievements in reading comprehension are different after using REAP strategy. It showed by the interval score between the pretest and posttest in experimental group (11.59) was higher than the interval score between pretest and posttest in control group (6.37). This strategy was also proved effective, showed by the effect size value ( 0.98, qualified as having moderate effect.   Key Words: Reading, Narrative Text, REAP Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: The research aimed at finding the correlation between motivational strategy teacher used and students’ English learning achievement. This research applied correlation method as research design. The sample of this research is  seventh grade student of SMPN 7 Pontianak in academic year 2016/2017. The data were obtained from Questionnaire and Students’ English Rapor Score.The two data sets are in form of statistics and tabulation which later be calculated in Pearson concept in determining the correlation. The result is 0,747 indicates that a high correlation between two variables of motivational strategies and students achievement. The contribution values both motivational strategy teacher used toward students learning achievement is 55,80 % (r2) which meant that the motivational strategy  teacher used give contribution about 55,80 % and the balance 44.20 % is influenced by others variables. The result has been verified by SPPS 17.0 tool. Keywords : Motivational Strategy, Students Achievement, Correlation   Abstract:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara strategi motivasi yang digunakan guru terhadap pencapaian siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kolerasi sebagai rancangan penelitian. Subjek penilitian ini adalah siswa kelas 7 dari SMPN 7 Pontianak tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Data data diperoleh dari kuesioner dan nilai rapot bahasa Inggris siswa. Dua data tersebut ditampilkan dalam bentuk statistik dan yang kemudian akan dihitung dengan menggunakan konsep Pearson untuk menentukan korelasi tersebut. Hasilnya adalah 0,747 menunjukkan bahwa adanya korelasi yang tinggi diantara dua variabel tersebut yaitu strategi motivasi yang digunakan guru dan pencapain siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan kontribusi atau pengaruh strategi yang digunakan guru terhadap hasil pencapaian siswa sebesar 55,80 %  dan sebanyak 44.20 % berasal faktor lainya. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research are to investigate the effectiveness and the effect size of using Battleship game in teaching Yes/No questions in simple present tense to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Semparuk in academic year 2014/2015.  This research was conducted as a pre-experimental research and the sample was class VIID which consists of 39 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test by using objective test consisting of twenty five items and were analyzed by using t-test and Effect Size (ES) formulas. The findings show that the t-computation is 16.6 (> 2.042) or higher than the t-table value with the degree of freedom of 38 and α of 0.05, and the effect of treatment is 2.67 (> 1.00) or categorized as strong effect. It indicates that the use of Battleship game is effective in teaching Yes/No questions in simple present tense. Keywords: Battleship game, Yes/No questions   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifitian and tingkat efektifitas dari penggunaan Battleship game dalam pengajaran Yes/No questions dalam simple present tense terhadap siswa kelas 7 SMP Negeri 2 Semparuk tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode pre-eksperimen dan sampel penelitian ini adalah kelas VIID yang terdiri atas 39 siswa. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui pre-test dan post-test dengan menggunakan tes objektif yang berjumlah dua puluh lima soal dan data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus t-test dan ES (tingkat efektifitas). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hasil perhitungan t-test adalah 16.6 (> 2.042) atau lebih besar dibandingkan dengan nilai t tabel dengan degree of freedom sebesar 38 dan α sebesar 0.05, dan tingkat efektifitas adalah 2.67 (> 1.00) atau dikategorikan memiliki efek yang kuat. Hal ini menandakan bahwa penggunaan Battleship game efektif dalam pengajaran Yes/No questions dalam simple present tense. Kata kunci: Battleship game, Yes/No questions

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at knowing the students’ English achievement profile from 2010 - 2014 at SMKN 1 Teluk Keramat, Sekura. The method used in this research is descriptive. Based on the analysis, the mean score ( ) of students’ English national examination (Ujian Nasional/UN) achievement in 2010 was 6.29 with standard deviation (SD) of 1.25. In UN 2011, = 7.2 and SD= 1.28. In UN 2012, = 5.14 and SD= 1.61. In UN 2013, = 5.79 and SD= 1.09; and in UN 2014, = 4.81 and SD= 1.23. In five years, students’ English mean scores ( ) in the national examination in SMKN 1 Teluk Keramat, Sekura was 5.85 with the standard deviation of 1.56. It is concluded that the students’ English achievement profile in SMKN 1 Teluk Keramat, Sekura in the last five years showed an inconsistency trend and tended to show a negative progress.Keywords: Achievement profile, national examination (UN)Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil pencapaian siswa pada mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris pada tahun 2010 sampai 2014 pada SMKN 1 Teluk Keramat, Sekura. Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to find out the correlation between study habits and the English achievement of the tenth grade students at SMA N 03 Ketapang in the academic year of 2017-2018. Students’ sex was considered as another predictor variable. Wrenn (1941) Study Habits Inventory (SHI) was used to measure the students’ study habits. Students’ score from the English test was considered as the students’ English achievement. Pearson product-moment found that there was a positive correlation between students study habits and the English achievement with a strong level of correlation. Which meant as the level of study habits increases, the English achievement also increases. The female group had a higher correlation than the male. From the four aspects of the study habits, General habits and Attitudes of Works (GH and AW) contributed the most for the English achievement of the female students. Distribution of Time and Social Relationship of Study (DT and SR) gave the biggest contribution for the English achievement of the male students. This study implied the male students should contribute more time for study out of the school’s hours, and the female students should use more strategies in learning English. Keywords: Correlational study, study habits, English achievement, sex

Abstract: The purposes of this research are to find out whether the use of Peer Checklist effective or not and to find out how effective the use Peer Checklist is in teaching an application letter writing to eleventh grade students of SMK LKIA in academic year 2014/2015. This research was conducted as pre-experimental research. The sample of this research was class XI KN1 which consists of 34 students. The data  were collected by using pre-test and post-test through a written test. In the written test, the students were asked to write an application letter. The data were analyzed by using Effect Size (ES) formula. The finding shows that the effect of the treatment is 1.21 (≥ 1.00) or categorized as strong effect. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of peer checklist is effective in teaching the application letter writing. Keywords: Writing, Application Letter, Peer Checklist. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui pre-test dan post-test dengan menggunakan tes tertulis. Data tersebut dianalisa dengan menggunakan rumus ES (tingkat efektivitas). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa efek dari pengunaan peer checklist adalah 1.21 (≥ 1.00) atau dikategorikan memiliki efek yang kuat. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out the most causing factor of undergraduate students’ difficulties in writing thesis in the English Education Study Program of FKIP Tanjungpura University Pontianak. Descriptive research design was used in this research. 28 students were chosen as the sample and selected by using purposive sampling. The data was collected by using questionnaire with 31 items designed on a five-point likert-type scale to capture students’ opinion about the causing factors of their difficulties in writing thesis. Data analysis shows that basic knowledge of thesis main components factor has percentage 27.68%, process of consultation factor has percentage 26.04%, psychological factor has percentage 25.25%, while economic factor has percentage 21.03%. Therefore, it is concluded that basic knowledge of thesis main component factor is the most causing factor of students’ difficulties in writing thesis.   Keywords: factors, difficulties, thesis     Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan faktor yang paling menyebabkan mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif. 28 siswa dipilih menjadi sample menggunakan sample purposif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan angket yang berjumlah 31 item didesain berdasarkan 5 poin skala likert untuk menangkap opini mahasiswa mengenai faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan mereka kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi. Data analisis menunjukan bahwa faktor pengetahuan dasar dari komponen utama skripsi mendapat persentase 27.68%, faktor proses konsultasi mendapat persentase 26.04%, faktor psikologi mendapat persentase 25.25%, sedangkan faktor ekonomi mendapat persentase 21,03%. Oleh karena itu, disimpulkan bahwa faktor pengetahuan dasar dari komponen utama skripsi adalah faktor yang paling menyebabkan mahasiswa kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi.   Kata kunci: faktor, kesulitan, skripsi
