Abstract

One of phenomena in the handle of Covid pandemic is the polarization of religionists and scientists. This polarization occurs because the difference of paradigms from them in understanding about COVID-19. The religionists, who leans towards orthodoxy and conservatism, emphasize literal dogmatic approach, whereas the scientists emphasize on scientific approach with the principle of positivistic-materialism. This study discusses the paradigm of moderatism in COVID-19 prevention from integration of science and religion perspective. By using qualitive research and in-depth analysis based on John F. Haugt’s integration theory, this study found the idea of integration between science and religion as a paradigm of moderatism in COVID-19 prevention. This is an epistemological effort in order to create dialogical relationship between science and religion. It means that both fulfill and reinforce each other thereby augmenting the agenda of COVID-19 prevention. There is a need for epistemological transformation that both sides need to undergo to achieve the agenda. Religion, which has been embodied by a literal dogmatic perspective, needs to display dynamic and contextual. So, it can compromise with the reality especially in scientific approach. In the other hands, science which has followed positivistic-materialism principles. It should not be conducted free from all values but it should contain many values, especially spiritual and theistic. In contemporary religious discourse, the integration of science and religion in the context of COVID-19 prevention is a form of moderatism in responding the COVID-19 pandemic situation in terms of thinking, attitude, or behavior.

Abstract

This article discusses the notions of conservatism and religious moderatism through case studies of two contemporary Islamic organizations in Madura, Indonesia, namely Forum Kiai Muda Madura (FKM) and the Gerakan Santri-Pelajar Rahmatan Lil'alamin (GESPER) in Madura, Indonesia. These two mass organizations are part of the contemporary religious reality that significantly influences the religious dynamics of the Madurese community in Indonesia. This article uses qualitative research methods and Michel Foucault's theory of power relations. This study finds three findings. First, FKM and GESPER are local Islamic organizations in Madura that were both born and driven by a pesantren community consisting of Kiai, Lora, and santri. Second, based on its understanding and thoughts, the Islamic mass organization FKM's conservative religious view tends to be textual and exclusive. This mass organization is filled by the pesantren community outside the organizational structure of Nahdhlatul Ulama (NU), but culturally identify as adherents of NU. Meanwhile, the Islamic mass organization GESPER is an Islamic group that puts forward the values of moderation and tends to be dynamic and inclusive. Included in this line are the Islamic boarding schools, which are active in the organizational structure of NU in Madura. Third, although both were born in Islamic boarding schools, the two are often involved in friction due to differences in addressing contemporary Islamic social issues. This friction includes socio-religious issues that are thought-provoking, such as the discourse of Islam Nusantara, and practical socio-religious issues that are related to political themes, both at local and national levels

Abstract: The study of the integration of religion and science always attracts the attention of many people, especially academics in religious tertiary circles. Theoretically, the discourse is intended to bridge the meeting of religion-science, which in many occasions is often disputed. To the extent that there are many ideas on the integration of religion and science, at both the theoretical and practical levels, one of them is the idea of establishing an international ma'had. This study will specifically examine the idea of the integration of Islam-based moderation of Islam in Islamic religious tertiary institutions through Ma'had International. Three main issues that will be the focus of the study, namely: the concept of international ma'ad, the integration of religion-science, and finally, the moderation of Islam. Three focus of study will be translated into two research questions, namely; 1) What is meant by the concept of International ma'had and Islamic moderation? 2) What is the role and strategic function of the international ma'had in integrating Islamic moderation-based religions? This study is a literature study based on the type of qualitative research. The data used in the study are secondary data sourced from library data. The theoretical perspective used is John F. Haught's theory of religious integration. Theoretically, this study has a major contribution in enriching the science of religion, especially the study of integration of religion and science. in practice, this study has a major contribution in terms of providing solutions to the ideal idea of integrating Islamic moderation-based religion in the environment of Islamic religious colleges. The findings of this study contain an in-depth explanation of the concept of ma'had International, as well as an in-depth analysis of the integration strategy of Islam-based moderation based Islam through the idea of ma'had International within the Islamic diversity tertiary environment.

Abstract

In many social science studies, Madurese people are not only known for having traditionalist religious culture, they are also known for their heterogeneous religious typologies. This study specifically examines the constellation of religious thought between the two contemporary Islamism movements in Madura, namely the Madura Ulama Alliance (AUMA) and Gesper. Both AUMA and Gesper both were born from pesantren circles, and were driven directly by the religious elite of pesantran, Kiai and lora (read: Gus in Java) pesantren. Based on the composition of its management, Gesper consists of elite boarding schools, both Kiai and lora, the majority of which are active in managing large organizations, Nahdhatul Ulama (NU). On the other hand, AUMA is mostly inhabited by Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) non-structural elites, but culturally has emotional ties with NU traditions. Therefore, although both were born and developed from a pesantren environment, in some cases AUMA and Gesper have differences, especially in terms of thinking. The condition is at the same time an explanation of why AUMA and Gesper are often involved in the struggle of religious thought in the dynamics and diversity discourse in Madura. One of them is the debate about the correct use of the term Nusantara Islam, and the latest is the dispute about whether or not to elect and appoint leaders from non-Muslims.

Abstract

This study focuses on discussing the debate around the ideal format of the general election system in Indonesia, between open, closed, and mixed proportional systems. There are three research questions raised in this study, how is the application of a proportional system in the dynamics of elections in Indonesia? What are the weaknesses and strengths of implementing a proportional electoral system in Indonesia, both with open and closed systems? Is it possible for two electoral proportional systems (open and closed) to be mated into a new system, a mixed proportional system, for example? This research was conducted based on a qualitative approach. The sources and types of data used are secondary data, especially those from library materials such as books, journals, previous research results, and information media, both print and online. After analyzing field data based on the perspective of political sociology theory, this study found the finding that since it was first held in 1955, elections in Indonesia have used a proportional system to date, starting from a closed system and then moving on to an open system. At the practical level, both of these approaches have weaknesses. Closed proportionality tends to weaken people's participation, while open proportionality makes political parties not optimally carry out their party functions. In order to bridge this problem, a new approach is needed, one of which is to implement a mixed member proportional (MMP) system. In general, the idea of a mixed proportional system has advantages in terms of strengthening the function of political parties and the participation of the people to directly elect their representatives.
