Abstract

Coffee is the most valuable traded commodity after oil. On coffee, bees act to support a pollination that is shown by the number of harvested berries. This research aimed to evaluate the use of pyraclostrobin on flowering stage and insect pollinators on Arabica Coffee. Experiment was conducted in Kalisat Coffee Farm, Jampit, Bondowoso, ca. 1600 meters after sea level from October 2013 to April 2014. Randomized Block Design was adopted in this experiment. Three doses of pyraclostrobin and control were used as treatments such as 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 cc L-1 of pyraclostrobin, and repeated three times. Percentage of fallen flower, fruiting stage, fruit production, frequency of bee`s visitation, and bee`s behavior was observed as variables in this experiment. Results showed that 1) percentage of fallen flowers was reduced by applying pyraclostrobin at 1.5 and 2.0 cc L-1 up to 50 % compared to control, 2) flowering rate was faster than control at 1.5 and 2.0 cc L-1 of pyraclostrobin, 3) application of 1.5 – 2.0 cc L-1 of pyraclostrobin increased the number of young fruits and pinheads, and 4) pollinators preferred to visit flowers of coffee trees which sprayed by pyraclostrobin than control treatment especially Apis mellifera.

Abstract

Beetle activity deep inside wood was studied in field (Mt. Yoshida, Kyoto) and laboratory conditions by monitoring the type and amount of frass ejected from beetle galleries of Platypus quercivorus. Twenty-one galleries were selected from five infested Quercus serrata trees for field studies. In the laboratory, frass production was monitored for three galleries using a computer-aided electrical balance (A&D Co. Ltd.). Long-term patterns of frass production from field observation revealed that there are three distinguishable stages; a fibrous frass stage, an intermediate stage, and a powdery frass stage. The duration of the fibrous frass production was clearly different between galleries, ranging from five to twenty one days. The intermediate stage was also different from gallery to gallery, ranging from two to twenty days. Accordingly, the starting time of the third stage, powdery frass production, ranged from the 19th to the 27th day. Under laboratory conditions, the long-term patterns of frass production revealed that in galleries of logs no. 1 and 2 the fibrous frass period was stopped on the 23rd and 22nd day, respectively. Field monitoring revealed there was a negative relationship between the length of fibrous frass stage and the length of the intermediate stage.   Keywords:  fibrous frass stage,  intermediate stage, Platypus quercivorus, powdery frass stage

Abstract

The agroforestry system with its diversity of vegetation has the potential on the existence of antagonistic and entomopathogen fungi. This study was conducted to evaluate the diversity of antagonistic fungi and entomopathogen fungi in the rhizosphere and pine leaf litters on pine monoculture and intercropping pine - coffee. The research was started from plot determination, sampling, fungal identification, antagonist test and pathogenicity test. The results of isolation of fungi from pine leaf litter on monoculture pine and intercropping pine-coffee fields obtained 17 genus of fungi. In monoculture pine, there 9 genus of fungi were found, while other 4 were still unidentified. In pine-coffee intercropping land 13 genus were observed. Based on the potential and bility tests, Acremonium sp. 3 and Penicillium sp. 2 has the highest inhibiton capacity, while isolate Paecilomyces sp. 1 and Paecilomyces sp. 2 had the best level of pathogenicity and mortality. Temperature and humidity did not affect the diversity of fungi. The diversity of entompathogenic and antagonistic fungi was higher in the pine-coffee intercropping land use. The litter plots had higher fungal diversity than the rhizosphere.

Abstract

ABSTRACTEntomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) as biological agents, is consistedSteinernema and Heterorhabditis genus. Steinernema and Heterorhabditis whichbelonged to Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae families had closedrelationship to Xenorabdus and Photorabdus as bacterial symbionts respectively(Smart, 1995). Types of soil moisture, temperature, and a host affect thedistribution, survivability, host finding and reproduction of EPNs. To get theEPNs local isolates, exploration of isolates from local areas was needed. Thisresearch was aimed to identify genus and density of EPNs on the fields of corn, soybean and cabbage in Malang Areas and their virulence to the larvae ofSpodoptera litura. Research was conducted at laboratory of pest and disease(Nematological Unit), Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture,University of Brawijaya, from April to September 2012. EPNs were obtainedfrom corn field in Ngijo village, soybean field in Kendalpayak village, andcabbage field in Bumiaji village. EPNs were isolated from soil samples by usingTenebrio molitor larva. White trap method was used to attract EPNs from Thedead larva of T. molitor and the population of EPNs was counted. EPNs wereidentified based on the symptoms of color changes on the cuticle andmorphological characters. In addition, virulence of EPNs was also tested on the S. litura larva. The result showed that density of EPNs was highest on cabbage field (23.264 EPNs/0.25 ml). Density of EPNs on corn field was 16.976 EPNs/0.25 ml and the lowest density was on soybean field (15.664 EPNs/0.25 ml). Based on the color changes and morphological characters of EPN, on the cabbage field, EPNs were identified as Steinernema and Heterorhabditis and the others, EPNs were identified as Steinernema. Based on the virulence test of EPNs on S. litura larva, there was significant difference between EPNs isolate of corn and othersespecially for 24 hours after application. Keywords: identification, virulence, entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs),Spodoptera litura

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research was aimed to study the population, attack intensity of bagworm (M. plana) and it parasitoid on oil palm plantations. Sampling was conducted 4 times in blocks 1-9 Afdeling OK PT. Lestari Tani Teladan, Donggala, Central Sulawesi from August to October 2012. A systematic sampling method was used to observe M. plana population from each observation point. There were two stages of M. plana such as larvae and pupae. Both stages were checked their conditions to clarify their parasitoids. In addition, parasitoids were observed especially at fourth observation. Result showed that population of M. plana larva decreased during observation period (from August to October 2012). Opposite condition was occurred that population of pupa increased in same period of observation. Highest population of M. plana was recorder on third and fourth block of plantation. Number of parasitized pupae directly proportional to total of pupae (R2=0,95). Populations of parasitoid have not been able to control pests M. plana naturally. Some parasitoids were identified such as Brachymeria sp. (34%), Eurytoma sp. (13%), Entodoninae (17%), Tetrastichus sp. (24%), Tachinidae 9% and two species of Phygadeuontinae 2% and 1% for each.Key words: bagworm, Metisa plana, parasitoid, oil palm
