Abstract

BACKGROUND A notable rise in sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases among youth correlates with a lack of reproductive health awareness, affecting nearly 80% of Indonesian adolescents. Additionally, sociocultural taboo acts as a challenge to reproductive health implementation in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aimed to develop an online reproductive health module focused on STIs for Indonesian adolescents. METHODS This research was a mixed methods approach, integrating quantitative study using univariate analysis (survey and questionnaire) and qualitative study using the Delphi method (open discussion and focus group discussion). The study was conducted between March 2 and July 28, 2022. We began by conceptualizing a literature-based module, an online survey, and virtual discussions involving students, teachers, and parents. Then, we consulted with clinical psychologists and dermatovenereologists. Additionally, students completed an assessment to establish a baseline of their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) regarding reproductive health and STIs. RESULTS Of 327 high school students across Jakarta, analysis of the 129 completed KAB surveys showed that only 56.6% and 65.1% attained acceptable scores (>65) for knowledge and behavior, respectively, with 24.8% being at risk for STIs. Key recommendations included incorporating multimedia elements, ensuring clarity and simplicity in language, adopting non-judgmental tone, providing comprehensive explanations of STIs and their long-term impact, and supporting learning with face-to-face sessions and ongoing access to concise, cost-effective educational resources. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents need a comprehensive, interactive, instructive, accessible, non-discriminatory reproductive module that strengthens the self-concept that upholds Indonesian values and norms.

Abstract

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) is recognized as an essential component of maternal health aimed at reducing maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Antenatal care has undergone a digital transformation through mobile health (mHealth), but research specifically discussing mHealth solutions for antenatal care in Indonesia is still limited. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the web-based application Bundaqusehat in supporting antenatal services. Methods: The research design was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest with a control group, and the research participants included 30 pregnant women from two Health Centers (intervention group) and one Health Center (control group). Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis used the T-test, with a significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The analysis showed significant improvements in pregnant women's knowledge (p = 0.001), satisfaction (p = 0.002), attitude (p = 0.002), behavior (p = 0.001), adherence to iron tablet consumption (p = 0.030), and fetal movement monitoring (p = 0.041). The intervention group showed greater adherence to the recommended antenatal practices than the control group. Conclusion: The Bundaqusehat application demonstrates significant potential in enhancing the quality of antenatal care, highlighting the critical role of digital health solutions. Future research should focus on refining and optimizing these digital interventions to maximize their positive impact.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the prevalence, risk factors, impacts, and response types to workplace bullying among resident doctors. Methods: The study was conducted using the scoping review method. An online search was performed across five databases, MEDLINE [PubMed], Cochrane Library, APA PsycArticles, Scopus, and Science Direct, using keyword developments from Medical Subheadings (MeSH). The selected articles were those published from 2013 to 2024. Results: A total of 1,402 articles that discussed workplace bullying were identified, and after screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 articles were selected. The prevalence of workplace bullying ranged from 13% to 89% across various specialties. Additionally, a significant relationship was found between specialization type, residency year, age, gender, skin color, work shifts, organizational climate, and the mental condition of the resident doctors with the incidence of workplace bullying. Resident doctors who were victims of bullying were at risk of experiencing cognitive disorders, fatigue, job dissatisfaction, sleep difficulties, performance decline, weight changes, and even suicidal thoughts. Victims of bullying tended to respond to the behavior by sharing their experiences with family, friends, or close ones. Conclusions: Bullying among resident doctors shows a relatively high prevalence. Future research is expected to develop a confidential bullying reporting system as an initial mechanism for controlling workplace bullying.

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide, with early detection being critical for reducing adverse outcomes. This study aimed to develop a machine learning model for predicting the risk of preeclampsia using readily available maternal characteristics such as body mass index, mean arterial pressure, and clinical history of hypertension or diabetes mellitus. Secondary data from 2,250 pregnancies were analyzed, addressing challenges such as missing data and class imbalance through preprocessing. Various algorithms, including support vector machines, random forest, and logistic regression, were evaluated. Herein, a support vector machines model with threshold adjustment showed the best performance, with a sensitivity of 67.5%, specificity of 57.23%, and an area under the curve of 0.68. These findings indicated the promising potential of scalable and interpretable prediction models for enhancing preeclampsia screening in primary health care settings. However, further refinement and validation of the proposed model are required for broader clinical integration to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

Abstract

The world is still facing the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and the current challenge is the epidemic, which was thought to have become endemic, but it seems far from that. This article describe the recent progress of the COVID-19 globally, including in Indonesia, and what should be done towards building community health resilience. Each day, more than 500,000 new cases are being detected worldwide. This condition shows that the present pandemic is not over and still requires global vigilance. The challenge faced by the world, and Indonesia, is to develop resilient communities as a prerequisite to controlling any future epidemic. This can be achieved by adopting five strategies: strengthen and promote access to public health and social services, promote health and wellness and disaster preparedness, expand communication and collaboration, engage at-risk individuals and activate programs to protect their health, and build social connectedness.

Abstract

Reproductive health for adolescents with disabilities is often disregarded, and education on personal hygiene is insufficient because some people perceive menstruation as a sensitive topic and have a false belief that adolescents with disabilities have no sexual desire. This study aimed to determine the overview of personal hygiene behavior among adolescents with physical and intellectual disabilities when facing menstruation. The method used was qualitative, with case studies, in-depth interviews, and observations for data collection. The informants comprised four adolescents aged 19-21 years, two mothers, and two therapists for special needs children. This study was conducted at two growth and development clinics in South Jakarta, Indonesia, from July to September 2021. This study found a lack of apprehension about menstrual personal hygiene among mothers and adolescents with disabilities, a lack of understanding about menstrual personal hygiene in general among adolescents with disabilities, and inappropriate menstrual personal hygiene behavior among adolescents with disabilities. To conclude, this study underlines the importance of improving the ability of adolescents with disabilities in terms of menstrual hygiene behavior.
