Abstract

Background: Childhood obesity is an increasing public health concern among school-aged children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While parental support and the school environment are recognized as important determinants, evidence comparing their relative influence within a socio-ecological framework remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between parental support, the school environment, and obesity risk among school-aged children in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 children aged 7–12 years using a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using a validated parental support questionnaire, school environment assessment instrument, and anthropometric measurements to determine the body mass index (BMI) for age. Associations were analyzed using the chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression. This study was conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Results: Both parental support and school environment were significantly associated with obesity risk. Children with low parental support had higher odds of obesity (OR = 2.50; 95% CI: 1.20–5.10), whereas those exposed to less healthy school environments had even higher odds of obesity (OR = 2.80; 95% CI: 1.35–5.80). Among the examined factors, the school environment demonstrated the strongest independent association with the risk of obesity. Conclusion: Parental support and the school environment are important determinants of obesity risk among school-aged children; however, school-level factors appear to play a more dominant role in this regard. These findings highlight schools as a critical entry point for childhood obesity prevention within a socio-ecological framework, particularly in LMIC.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS causes health problems in the world, resulting in death. HIV/AIDS sufferers require long-term treatment from health services. Nursing students are part of health services. This research is quantitative research with a descriptive approach. The sample was determined using a total sampling technique and obtained 230 respondents. Data collection used the HIV Knowledge Questionnaire 45 (HIV-KQ-45). Data were analyzed univariately to see the frequency distribution of the research variables. The data was analyzed univariately to observe the frequency distribution of the research variables. The research results showed that most nursing students' knowledge about HIV/AIDS was in the sufficient category (66.5%) and the least in the good category (14.8%). From the results obtained, it was concluded that the majority of nursing students' knowledge about HIV/AIDS was in the sufficient category and the minority was in the good category. This shows that students' knowledge about HIV/AIDS is still inadequate. It is necessary to prepare prospective nurses starting during education to avoid a lack of knowledge in the hope of improving services to HIV/AIDS sufferers as much as possible in the future.

Abstract

Family eating habits significantly influence the nutritional intake of school-age children. In rural villages like Pemulutan Village, Ogan Ilir Regency, geographic location and local food availability contribute to family eating patterns. Understanding children's experiences is crucial to support family-based community nursing interventions. This study aims to explore school-age children's experiences related to family eating habits, considering the influence of the geographic location of Pemulutan Village, Ogan Ilir. This study employed a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. Participants were eight children aged 6–12 years living in Pemulutan Village, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using in-depth semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Four main themes emerged: (1) river fish as the family's staple food, (2) limited food variety due to rural location, (3) the role of parents in determining food choices based on local availability, and (4) the meaning of eating together as a form of family adaptation to the environment. This study concludes that the geographic location of Pemulutan Village influences the family eating habits of school-age children. Community nurses can develop family-based nutrition education and utilize local foods to support child growth and development.

Abstract

Sleep disturbance is one of the common complaints experienced by patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stage V undergoing hemodialysis, which has an impact on decreasing the quality of life physically, psychologically, and socially. Non-pharmacological therapy such as the Benson relaxation technique is considered effective and safe in overcoming sleep disturbances and improving the emotional well-being of patients. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Benson relaxation technique in improving the quality of life of patients with CKD stage V. The research design used was a quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test approach with a control group, involving 60 respondents who were divided into intervention groups (n=30) and control groups (n=30) through a purposive sampling technique. The intervention was carried out for 14 days with a duration of 15–20 minutes of exercise per day. The instrument used was a quality of life (QoL) questionnaire consisting of five aspects: satisfaction with therapy, impact on life, fear of complications, social problems, and total QoL score. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) instrument used in this study has been proven valid (r = 0.412–0.698; p < 0.05) and reliable (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.824; p = 0.000), making it suitable for measuring patient sleep quality. Data were analyzed using statistics, with Pearson validity test, Cronbach's Alpha reliability ( α = 0.824), Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney difference tests. The results showed a significant increase in the total QoL score from 2.63 ± 0.49 to 3.27 ± 0.39 (p = 0.001). All aspects of QoL also experienced a significant increase (p < 0.05), especially in the aspect of satisfaction with therapy and decreased fear of complications. Field findings also showed that patients felt calmer, could fall asleep faster, and showed increased social interaction after the intervention. The conclusion of this study is that the Benson relaxation technique is effective in improving the quality of life of CKD stage V patients and is recommended as a nursing intervention that can be applied routinely and independently in hemodialysis service practices.
