Abstract

Blue Swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus) is one of important fishery in Indonesia that captured nearshore on the bottom of the sea. There has been a significant water contamination on the Jakarta bay and the fishery are reported to be effected. Many heavy metals and other contaminants are introduced into the waters, sediments, and fishery that living in the bay.  Heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Hg and As are the most lethal contaminants and found in Jakarta Bay. This study aims to determine the effect of heavy metals contaminants to the blue swimming crab morphometric, body organs and population structure of blue swimming crabs in Jakarta bay, which compared to the study in healthier environment in Madura island. The results of this study showed that 1) The morphometric parameter of blue swimming crab population in Jakarta and Madura are significantly different. 2) The internal organ of the blue swimming crab (hepatopancreas, gonad and gill) in Jakarta bay are also significantly different  than in Madura. The histological analysis are confirmed some abnormal indication of the internal body of the blue swimming crab in Jakarta bay.3) Some population parameters of the blue swimming crab in jakarta bay are significantly different than in Madura island. The fishery structure in Jakarta bay showed the size of first maturity of the crabs is relatively smaller than in Madura and other area of Inodonesia. Abstract

Waste containing heavy metals originating from human activity in Tangerang will go into the waters and tributaries of the Coastal District Tangerang. Heavy metals accumulate in bodies of water, sediment and biota scallop will go into the human body through exposure to direct dermal contact or intake. The purpose of this study to determine the public health risk due to exposure to heavy metals and formulate risk management that can be done. The approach taken by the USEPA methods of risk analysis and quantification of health risks from exposure to water and sediment using SEDISOIL risk analysis model developed by the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Protection.. The results showed that in general water quality parameters are still below the quality standard by decree No. 51 of 2004 LH. Analysis of health risks for people who move directly (bathing, swimming, fishing) shows the value of RQ > 1, meaning that coastal communities at risk for adverse effects of exposure to heavy metals Pb, Cd and Zn. Similarly, the results of the analysis of risk through consumption of biota scallop, with RQ values > 1 and ECR > 10-4. It shows that scallop (Placuna placenta) is not suitable for consumption by the public, because the content of Pd , Cd, and Zn health risk for consuming. Keywords: risk assessment, heavy metals, Tangerang District littoral

Abstract

Alien crayfish species (Cherax quadricarinatus and Procambarus clarkii) have been found in some Indonesian area and demonstrated invasive species characters. Despite of their economy benefit the crayfish has potential ecologically disadvantage to be valuated. This study aimed to develop valuation method to estimate economical loss due to alien invasive species on food competition basis in an aquatic ecosystem. This approach was conducted by estimating the potential loss due food competition between invasive species and its inferior competitor. The case study was carried out in the Lido Lake and in an aquaculture site at Cisaat, Sukabumi – West Java. The research results that economic loss due to the disappearance of native Macrobrachium sintangense caused by the existences of single male C. quadricarinatus is 784 IDR and 1,096 for the female in Lido Lake. The potential loss of M. rosenbergii due to the single P. clarkii is 1,416.76 IDR. The difference economic loss is constituted by the quantity of feed taken by the invasive species, and the economic value of competitive inferior species. This method is clearly explained in the method section and is simple to use, but more understandable for limited economics background stakeholders. However, this approach needs robust biological dynamic model. The valuation results become important reference for the policy maker to develop risk analysis in concern of introduced invasive species into an ecosystem. For holistic economic loss value valuation, further studies covering space competition and potential harmful pathogen carrier are warranted.

Abstract

Horseshoe crab is an exotic and protected marine organism in Indonesia and is considered as the living fossil animal in the world. IUCN conservation status of Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus gigas is still Data Deficient, and in Indonesia research on genetic population is lacking, if any. This study aims to reveal genetic diversity of C. rotundicauda and T. gigas populations in northern Java (Demak and Madura) and Balikpapan waters. This research was conducted by using molecular analysis with genetic markers Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The primers used in this study were OPB 06, OPG 10, and OPX 03. The results showed that the highest polymorphism of C. rotundicauda was found in Demak (74.6667%) and heterozygosity was 0.2669. Furthermore, T. gigas had the highest polymorphism in Madura (74.3590%) and heterozygosity was 0.25551. Based on pairwise comparison tests, populations of C. rotundicauda and T. gigas in Demak, Madura, and Balikpapan were significantly different (p<0.05). The difference is believed due to the limitation movement of horseshoe crabs from and into the three locations, as well as the presence of natural geographic barrier. Thus,it can be concluded that horseshoe crabs in northern Java and Balikpapan waters has different genetic diversity. Genetically, horseshoe crab in northern Java or Balikpapan had relatively moderate diversity and low adaptation capability.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem is valuable coastal ecosystems for human because its economic, physical and ecological functions. One of the coastal areas which is the habitat of the mangove ecosystem is the coast of West Muna Regency. The coastal development in the coastal area had reduced the mangrove area and the density of mangrove ecosystem, which in turn affected the structure and density status of the ecosystem. The number of mangrove species in the coast of West Muna Regency was ten species consisting of Bruguiera cylindrica, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, Sonneratia alba, Xylocarpus granatum, Ceriops tagal, Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, and Calophyllum inophyllum. The total density of mangrove was 752 trees/ha, however, by seeing in detail through each sampling station the density of Station I, II, III and IV was 879, 621, 687 and 820 trees/ha, respectively. Those densities are categorized as low density.

Abstract

Information on habitat preferences of the blue swimming crab (BSC) juvenile and its spatial distribution is one of the factors behind the successfulness of its sustainable management. This information is needed to provide input for management strategy by considering juvenile crabs and their habitat as important aspect. The purpose of this study is to elucidate habitat preferences, abundance and biomass distribution of BSC juvenile in the east Lampung coastal waters. The research was conducted in September-October 2018, which was located in east Lampung coastal waters, Province Lampung. Spatial distribution through estimation of abundance and biomass of BSC juvenile were relatively high and concentrated in the Gambas and Wako regions at stratification of 2-4 miles from the coastline. The BSC juvenile does not appear to have a high preference to the Kuala Penet coastal habitat condition; it is considered because of low value of abundance, biomass, and Habitat suitability index (HSI). The value of HSI in the Kuala Penet Coastal region is also lower than other locations due to abiotic and biotic factors for supporting the crabs at juvenile stage.

Abstract

Horseshoe crabs are living fossils found in Indonesia. This study examined the food habit of horseshoe crabs (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus gigas) collected from Balikpapan coastal waters, East Kalimantan. Horseshoe crabs were captured using gill nets and picked by hand along the Balikpapan coast. The width of the prosoma and the body weight of each individual were measured, and the gut contents were analysed to determine the preponderance index, food niche breadth, and niche overlap. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda prosoma widths ranged from 4.1 to 15.4 cm and those of Tachypleus gigas ranged from 2.8 to 24 cm. Eight food items were found in the gut of the horseshoe crabs, namely: bivalves, gastropods, scaphopoda, polychaetes, echinoderms, crustaceans, leaf litter and others. Based on the preponderance index, gastropods were the main food item of the two horseshoe crab species. In accordance to the food composition the horseshoe crabs inhabiting Balikpapan coastal waters are categorized as benthivores.

Abstract

One of the ecological functions of mangroves ecosystem is to store carbon. Yet, on the other hand it also has the potential to cause greenhouse gas emissions through litter degradation even though its value is lower compared to the absorption value. Based on these two facts, mangrove management as a Green Open Space in the Tallo river area of Makassar City needs to consider involving the participation of the community and the government as stakeholders. The research was conducted by desk work, literature study and respondent interviews regarding perceptions and participation in mangrove management. The results showed that the total uptake of mangrove carbon in the Tallo river in Makassar city was 351.02 tons CO2/ha, oxygen supply 255.29 O2-equivalent/ha, and the potential for global warming was 252.41 mg/ m2/hour consisting of 194, 33 mg/m2/hour of CO2 gas, 15.76 mg/m2/hour of CH4 gas, and 42.33 mg/m2/hour of N2O gas. The results of community perception and participation analysis show that around 89% of the community strongly agreed and supported the government in the effort to manage mangroves as a green open space. Based on this, the ecosystem in the Tallo river is very suitable to be managed for green open space as fresh air supplier and CO2 adsorber as well as a noise reduction from vehicle or industrial engines in Makassar city.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to determine the performance of small-scale grouper fisheries in Saleh Bay using a spatial bioeconomic approach. The optimal fishing trip allocation and economic rent based on the fishing grounds and its season were estimated using this approach. The results showed from the seven main fishing grounds (DPI) in Saleh Bay, the highest optimal trip need to be allocated to DPI-7 with approximately 2833 trips per year, followed by DPI-5 (2107), DPI-1 (1158), DPI -4 (1064), DPI-6 (970), DPI-2 (940) and DPI-3 (524). The intensity of fishing trip responded to the quasi-profit. The grouper catches produced quasi-profits of IDR 1.4 billion per year. The maximum and minimum annual profits of IDR 428 million and IDR 55 million were achieved in DPI-7 and DPI-3, respectively. This trip allocation complements the existing restriction management instrument, related to the control of input, area and season closure options. This strategy choice eases the fisheries managers to focus on spatial and temporal control efforts with high resolution.
