Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on politeness strategies employed by EFL learners in social communication or classroom contexts. As a result, it is fascinating to analyze the extent to which scholars have explored this issue. By examining 20 published articles in reputable journals in a decade (2011 – 2021), this literature review study aimed to investigate the politeness strategies employed among EFL learners and the pedagogical implications of politeness strategies in EFL classrooms. The findings showed that there were five politeness strategies used in social communication, including positive politeness, bald on-record, negative politeness, off-record, and do not do FTA. Nonetheless, the latest strategy was not employed in the classroom context. Each strategy chosen by EFL learners was due to the power, social distance, age, and cultural background. These findings shed light on the pedagogical implication of politeness strategies, which should be implied in the teaching learning process and in designing the course and preparing the materials. Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the implementation of mind mapping strategy to teach writing in IELTS preparation class. It was a descriptive qualitative study on 20 students of IELTS preparation classes. Those students were divided into 6 classes based on their level after taking IELTS placement test. There were 3 teachers who taught 2 classes each. The data were collected by using classroom observations, students’ questionnaire, teachers’ interview, and document analysis. The present study revealed four results. First, mind mapping strategy was implemented by grouping the visual data to find out main trends, large increase or decrease, consistent direction and the relationship between modes and percentages in task 1; whereas in task 2, it was implemented by building students’ critical thinking to list main ideas which later on give supporting details for each main idea. Second, the students enjoyed teaching learning process through mind mapping strategy which resulted in passing guarantee program of having score improvement minimum 1 point, improved their analysis of data, enlarged their knowledge in academic writing topic, built their critical thinking and managed time well. Third, the problems during the implementation of those two strategies were teachers’ schedule, students’ activities at school before joining IELTS preparation class, time management, repetition ideas and phrases, laziness and boredom, and also illegible hand writing. Fourth, the solutions were: managing teachers’ and students’ schedule well, doing the test in time as instructions, reading many articles related with IELTS writing to broaden students’ knowledge, giving free writing, and practicing more.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate students’ learning outcomes in English Intensive Program through Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) for Railway Mechanical Technology. The program was designed as a TOEFL preparation class that utilized Google Form, Quizizz, and Kahoot! As game-based learning (MALL platform). It was a case study on the 3rd year students of the Indonesian Railway Polytechnic (N=46). The observation was conducted during 20 meetings (40 hours). The data were collected through pre-test and post-test, then analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, Pearson r correlation, and Cohen d effect size. The passing grade score determined by the college (480) was also an additional consideration analysis. The results indicate significant impacts and a large effect on students’ learning outcomes after joining the English Intensive Program through MALL. Nonetheless, the English Intensive Program implementing MALL had a moderate correlation and was less effective in enhancing students’ learning outcomes. These findings shed light on the benefits and constraints of implementing MALL in the English Intensive Program.

The data was gathered through pretest before the first cycle and posttests after each cycle. Then, analysis was run in SPSS 25 using descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test and Cohen d to determine the degree of impact of the students’ learning outcomes. The findings showed that there was no mean difference between pretest and first cycle posttest, but there was mean difference between pretest and second cycle posttest and first cycle posttest and second cycle posttest. The test results before and after implementing game-based learning had strong relationship with modest impact. It meant that game-based learning was more effective than paper-based learning to accommodate students in TOEFL preparatory course section 2.
