Abstract

Program pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan oleh dosen Bahasa Inggris Politeknik Perkeretaapian Indonesia kepada petugas PT Kereta Api Indonesia China (PT KCIC). Target dari program ini adalah 23 orang calon petugas pelayanan penumpang karena mereka diharapkan dapat melayani penumpang lokal maupun internasional. Oleh karena itu, mereka harus memiliki kemampuan bahasa asing yang memadai (terutama bahasa Inggris) untuk memberikan pelayanan yang prima. Strategi pengembangan masyarakat digunakan dan metode praktis yang diintegrasikan ke dalam Technical Communication Pedagogical Model (TCPM) dalam konteks perkeretaapian diterapkan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para peserta menunjukkan kinerja yang lebih baik dalam mempraktekkan komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris setelah pelaksanaan pelatihan. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa model pembelajaran dengan menggunakan pendekatan komunikasi teknis mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris petugas pelayanan penumpang dalam konteks Kereta Api Cepat.

Abstract

Many vocational college graduates got difficulties during job interview process. Therefore, this community service activity aims to enhance vocational college students’ English communication skills, especially in public speaking, during the job interview process. It was done online through a Zoom meeting, which was opened for vocational college students in Madiun City, East Java. The activity was done in May 2024, starting from the preparation, implementation, and evaluation process. It ran well and benefited vocational college students by equipping them with and broadening their knowledge regarding the job interview process. The participants’ feedback was positive, in which the survey results showed that the community service activity improved their public speaking skills and confidence. The participants also provided a rough description of the job interview process through mock interviews. It is hoped that a similar activity will be carried out continuously in the future.            Keywords: English, Public Speaking, Training, Vocational College, Vocational Students Banyak lulusan kampus vokasi yang kesulitan saat menjalani proses interviu kerja. Untuk itu, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berkomunikasi bahasa Inggris mahasiswa vokasi terutama pada public speaking di proses wawancara kerja. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan secara daring melalui Zoom meeting yang dibuka bagi mahasiswa vokasi di kota Madiun, Jawa Timur. Kegiatan ini dilakukan pada bulan Mei 2024 yang dimulai dari proses persiapan, pelaksanaan dan evaluasi. Kegiatan berjalan dengan lancar dan bermanfaat bagi para mahasiswa vokasi dalam memperlengkapi dan memperluas wawasan mereka mengenai proses wawancara kerja. Umpan balik dari para peserta menunjukkan nilai positive dimana hasil survei menunjukkan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini meningkatkan kemampuan public speaking para peserta dan rasa percaya diri mereka. Para peserta juga mendapatkan gambaran kasar mengenai proses wawancara kerja melalui kegiatan mock-interview. Diharapkan bahwa kegiatan sejenis dapat diadakan berkelanjutan di masa mendatang.Kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Public Speaking, Pelatihan, Kampus Vokasi, Mahasiswa Vokasi

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate students’ perception in pursuing maritime higher education in digital era. It involved 72 students from 3 different majors in an Indonesian maritime higher education. This study used a quantitative research design which was facilitated by a survey questionnaire to gather the data. The questionnaire was in the form of 5-Likert scale consisting of 4 categories: education quality, economic motif, job availability, and self-competence. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25 employing Parametric tests analysis: descriptive statistics, Pearson r correlation, and Cohen d coefficient to find out the factors affecting students’ acceptance in continuing their degree in maritime higher education. The results showed that the students considered economic motif as the highest factor affecting their choice in pursuing higher degree in maritime sectors. Followed by job availability and self-competence, these factors became very important in competing toward professional maritime sectors. The lowest factor was education quality, yet the maritime higher education should keep up with improving maritime education quality as maritime industries developed fast in digital era. Some recommendations have been discussed to give insightful opinion for education policy makers and managerial board of maritime higher education institutions.

Abstract

Dalam proses manufaktur carbody kereta pada bagian side wall saat ini banyak menggunakan material pelat stainless steel 304 tebal 2 mm dengan metode resistance spot welding (RSW). Metode RSW memiliki kelebihan yaitu bentuk sambungan rapi, proses cepat, tidak memerlukan logam pengisi dan biaya murah. Namun, ditemukan beberapa cacat las RSW pada kereta stainless steel. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengurangi cacat pada permukaan las RSW dengan variasi arus pengelasan dan menambahkan pengujian kekuatan tarik untuk mengetahui pengaruh weld nugget yang terbentuk. Metode dalam penelitian ini yaitu eksperimental. Parameter pengelasan RSW yang digunakan adalah variasi arus pengelasan 8 kA, 9 kA, 10 kA, 11 kA, dan 12 kA, waktu lama pengelasan konstan 2 detik, serta menggunakan elektroda tembaga diameter 16 mm. Selanjutnya dilakukan proses pengelasan spesimen. Setelah proses pengelasan, dilakukan pengujian penetrant dan pengujian tarik spesimen. Hasil dari pengujian penetrant didapatkan cacat permukaan pada penggunaan variasi arus yang semakin tinggi akibat proses pendinginan yang tidak sempurna. Hasil kekuatan tarik tertinggi didapatkan dari penggunaan variasi arus pengelasan 12 kA dengan kekuatan tarik sebesar 47,763 N/mm² dan pengujian tarik terendah didapatkan pada penggunaan variasi 8 kA dengan pengujian tarik sebesar 22,345 N/mm². Hal ini disebabkan oleh diameter weld nugget yang terbentuk pada variasi 12 kA semakin besar maka semakin besar kekuatan tariknya.

Abstract

Several ICT tools are chosen as media in reading and writing courses, such as socrative for practicing and testing vocabulary, google form for practicing and evaluating reading ability, and writeabout for practicing students' writing skills based on given topics. The study analyze classroom practices of a reading and writing course in hybrid setting which integrated Task-Based Learning (TBL) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It is a case study with quantitative approach. This project was done in 6 classes of reading and writing course consisted of 159 students in total. The data was gathered through classroom observation, pre-, and post-test scores analysis, and questionnaire analysis about students' feedback. The pre-and post-test scores were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, paired sample t-test, and changing level analysis.The findings indicated that teachers integrated TBL and various ICT tools to accomplish the course description and objectives. The result of those three data analyses described significant improvement in students' learning outcomes. The course received positive responses from the students with a 4.02 out of 5 (good level). The integration of TBL and ICT in a reading and writing course is considerable in enhancing students' achievement and enjoyment in hybrid setting. This study provided benefit from insight into the knowledge and practice for reading and writing lecturers to integrate TBL and ICT in their instruction particularly in hybrid context.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional menjadi kompetensi penting bagi generasi muda Indonesia untuk bersaing secara global. Sebagai bentuk pemenuhan persyaratan kelulusan, mahasiswa vokasi di PPI Madiun diwajibkan memiliki sertifikat TOEFL Institusional dengan skor minimal 400. Namun, banyak mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan mencapai skor tersebut. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan memberikan pelatihan TOEFL menggunakan metode Flipped Classroom Model yang mendorong pembelajaran mandiri dan interaktif. Pelatihan dilaksanakan dalam empat tahap: persiapan, pretest, pelatihan, dan evaluasi. Materi diberikan dua minggu sebelum pelatihan, kemudian dilanjutkan pelatihan intensif selama tiga hari mencakup tiga aspek TOEFL: listening comprehension, structure and written expression, serta reading comprehension. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui posttest dan penyebaran kuesioner. Hasil menunjukkan peningkatan skor TOEFL secara signifikan, dengan 88% peserta mencapai skor minimal. Peserta juga memberikan respons positif terhadap metode pembelajaran yang digunakan. Kegiatan ini terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris mahasiswa vokasi dan direkomendasikan untuk dilaksanakan secara berkelanjutan.

Abstract

In the framework of planning the Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train (KCJB) which will be operated at the end of 2023, it is necessary to have services prepared to serve prospective passengers, namelyPassenger Service Officer on Train (PSOT). For this reason, the ability to use English for PSOT is important to support international passenger communication. The purpose of this activity is to provide English language training for Passanger Service Officers using the methodContextual Learning and Teaching (CTL). Evaluation of this activity using a Google form with a Likert scale. The results of the evaluation of this activity showed that the training activities benefited PSOT's work with the evaluation results of 75.12% stating that it was very good for the appearance and abilities of the presenters, and 73.55% choosing excellent criteria on the material criteria.

Abstract

Lubrication can be defined as the provision of lubricating materials to a machine that aims to prevent direct contact between moving surfaces. Viscosity is a very important property in lubricating oil. Sampling of engine oil was carried out on locomotives CC 206 13 18 and CC 206 13 45 at Depo Lokomotif Sidotopo Daop 8 Surabaya. Testing of engine oil samples was carried out at the ITS Surabaya Laboratory and PT Sucofindo Surabaya based on ASTM D 445-97, ASTM D 95-13, and ASTM D 482 standards. The results of the test will be compared with the locomotive engine oil eligibility limit standard. From the tests carried out, it was found that the oil in CC 206 13 18 produced a kinematic viscosity of 15.86 cSt, water contamination of 0.07%, and dissolved solid pollutants of 0.973%. CC 206 13 45 produces a kinematic viscosity of 15.38 cSt, water contamination of 0.06%, and dissolved solid pollutants of 0.917%. From the tests on the two locomotives, it was found that the kinematic viscosity, water contamination, and dissolved solid pollutants of engine oil CC 206 13 18 and CC 206 13 45 are still within the limits of feasibility. Kinematic viscosity can affect the maximum mileage of the locomotive. The result on CC 206 13 18 is 186,962 km and on CC 206 13 45 is 194,352 km. So the oil can still be used beyond the manufacturer's specified distance limit.

Abstract

Previous research has validated teachers' positive attitudes toward incorporating digital technology into general English classes, but little research has been undertaken in vocational universities, where English is classified as English for Specific Purposes. As a response, this study explored vocational university teachers’ perceptions of integrating digital technology in teaching English by considering years of teaching experience. Framed by a mixed-method research design with surveys and interviews, it engaged 120 vocational university teachers in Indonesia. Quantitative data were examined using descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and one-way ANOVA, while thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data. The analysis showed that 66.5% teachers perceived advantageously toward digital technology integration in the teaching of English to vocational university students. The findings disclosed that most participants perceived digital technology integration positively in terms of helping teachers teach English, increasing teachers’ creativity, assisting students in learning English, and supporting teachers’ professional development. Yet, 25% of the participants stated they were neutral, while 8.5% disagreed with the majority. It might be caused by challenges that still arose during technology integration in EFL classes. Further, there were no significant differences in statistical analysis comparing the teachers’ perception based on teaching experience. Several suggestions for teachers, vocational institutions, and educational policymakers were presented to shed light on vocational teachers’ professional development, which could improve the vocational education system.

Abstract

The present study investigates how to implement multiple e-learning technologies on practicing TOEFL PBT Section 2, Structure and Written Expression, and its effectiveness. It is a case study at Indonesian Railway Polytechnic. The participants were 48 students of the Railway Mechanical Technology program observed during eight online TOEFL practising classes. The data were collected using observation note to describe the implementation of e-learning technologies, comparing each score to determine the effectiveness of the technologies and a questionnaire to identify students’ feedback. The findings identified how to implement multiple e-learning technologies on practicing TOEFL PBT Section 2 in which effective to increase students’ TOEFL score; those technologies were regarded as interesting media on practicing TOEFL structure and written expression and received more positive feedbacks than the drawback from the students of Railway Mechanical Technology program. These imply that implementing multiple e-learning technologies on practicing TOEFL structure and written expression enhances students’ learning outcomes. HIGHLIGHTS: Multiple e-learning technologies enhance students’ learning outcomes in TOEFL PBT Section 2, structure and written expression. Quizizz, Kahoot!, Socrative, and Google Forms are interesting media on practicing TOEFL Structure and Written Expression. The fourth e-learning technologies receive more positive feedbacks than the drawback from the students in on practicing TOEFL PBT section 2.
