Abstract

Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) is a degenerative condition of the mitral valve where it weakens and causes regurgitation, eventually leading to cardiac remodeling. Jason, a seven-year-old male Shih Tzu weighing 7.5 kg, was presented with a persistent cough and exercise intolerance lasting over a month. A physical examination revealed a Grade II/VI heart murmur. Radiography and echocardiography were performed as part of the laboratory examinations. Radiography demonstrated cardiac remodeling, with a VHS of 10.3 viscerocranial, an intercostal space of 3, and a VLAS of 2.3. Echocardiography unveiled left atrial enlargement, mitral valve regurgitation, and a reduction in heart function. The dog was treated with Pimobendan (Cardisure® 10mg, Dechra, England) as an inodilatator at 0.25mg, Enalapril Maleate 0.5mg/kg (Tenace® 5mg, Combiphar, Indonesia), and furosemide (Farsix® 40mg, Fahrenheit, Indonesia) at 2 mg/kg via oral route twice a day over the course of seven days. Thereafter, the dose was reduced to 1.5 mg/kg PO twice a day for seven days, and eventually once a day for the remainder of the seven days. Following the three-week treatment, there was a significant reduction in the frequency and intensity of coughing.

Abstract

Background: Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a major cause of severe illness in dogs, particularly in unvaccinated puppies. The virus spreads rapidly and often leads to acute gastrointestinal disease with high morbidity and mortality. Purpose:  This case report describes the diagnosis and management of canine parvoviral enteritis in a young dog that presented with early clinical signs of infection. Case(s): A five-month-old female Golden Retriever named Golden, weighing 7.65 kg and light brown in color, was presented with a two-day history of anorexia, repeated vomiting (approximately five times per day), and bloody diarrhea. On physical examination, the patient was moderately dehydrated, with pale mucous membranes, delayed capillary refill time (>2 seconds), reduced skin turgor, and elevated heart and respiratory rates. Fecal examination revealed no intestinal parasites. Hematological analysis showed normocytic normochromic anemia, lymphocytosis, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. A rapid CPV antigen test confirmed the diagnosis of parvoviral infection. Based on the clinical and laboratory findings, the dog was diagnosed with canine parvoviral enteritis. Case Management: Treatment focused on supportive and symptomatic care. Cefotaxime (20 mg/kg body weight) was administered intravenously twice daily for five days to prevent secondary bacterial infection. To control vomiting, metoclopramide HCl (0.5 mg/kg body weight) was given intravenously. Supportive therapy included intravenous fluids (lactated Ringer’s solution) and vitamin B-complex supplementation. Conclusion:  The patient showed marked clinical improvement, including normalization of vital parameters, restoration of appetite and activity, and cessation of vomiting and diarrhea. The dog was considered clinically recovered at the end of the treatment period.

Abstract

Chronic bronchitis is common in cats, characterized by chronic neutrophilic inflammation of the bronchi and coughing and sneezing for more than two months. Cats can also be infected with ectoparasites such as fleas and mites. This article aims to provide information on the management of chronic bronchitis with symptomatic therapy through nebulization. A 1-year-old male domestic cat, weighing 2.15 kg, presented with a 3-month history of sneezing with mucopurulent nasal discharge, stridor, dry rales, and erythematous lesions, crusting, and alopecia on the ears. Hematologic examination indicated leukocytosis, lymphocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. A chest radiograph revealed a bronchial pattern and cytology of the nasal discharge revealed coccobacillus bacteria. Deep skin scrapings and flea combing identified Notoedres sp. and Felicola subrostratus. The cat was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis with scabies and fleas, with a favorable prognosis. Oral therapy with amoxiclav and methylprednisolone, and inhaled salbutamol. Spot-on therapy with fipronil and (s)-metophrene and 6% sulfur for ectoparasites, as well as Livron B-Plex® and fish oil. On the fourteenth day, clinical and laboratory evaluations showed recovery, while platelet counts returned to normal thirty days after therapy. Cats should be monitored regularly, their vitamin and mineral needs met, and vaccinations administered.

Abstract

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous and systemic mycotic infection affecting humans and animals. It is caused by a pathogenic dimorphic fungus of the genus Sporothrix. This study aimed to identify the clinical signs, prevalence, and risk factors of sporotrichosis in pet cats in Denpasar city. The sample of this study was the skin surface of cats, with a total sample of 101 cats. This study was conducted from November 2024 to January 2025. The examination method was carried out in four ways: physical examination, acetate tape preparation, and impression smear. The collection of skin surface samples was then examined by cytological techniques (Diff-Quik Staining). The results of this study showed that the clinical signs of one sporotrichosis-positive female cat included pruritus with a score of 4/10 in the head, face, and ear areas; the texture of the skin surface was rather rough and dry; there were crusts in the area between the right and left eyes; there was a lot of squama on most of her body's skin; and there was purulent discharge in both nostrils. The prevalence of sporotrichosis in pet cats in Denpasar city was 1%. Statistical analysis showed that factors such as sex, age, breed, husbandry, presence or absence of skin wounds, bathing frequency, and sterilization status were not risk factors for sporotrichosis.

Abstract

External otitis is a commonly encountered ear disease in cats, characterized by inflammation of the external auditory canal and influenced by predisposing, primary, secondary, and perpetuating factors. This case report describes a six-year-old male Persian cat with a history of recurrent external otitis. The cat was presented to the Internal Medicine Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University, Denpasar, Bali, with primary complaints of frequent ear scratching, head shaking, and the presence of yellow, foul-smelling discharge from both ears. Physical examination revealed yellowish, watery cerumen with a strong odor. Cytological examination demonstrated abundant rod-shaped bacteria, and bacterial culture confirmed the growth of Proteus spp. A diagnosis of bilateral external otitis caused by Proteus spp. infection was established, with a favorable prognosis. The treatment consisted of topical administration of Topigen® ear drops containing gentamicin sulphate (1.6 mg/mL), nystatin (100,000 IU/mL), and fluocinolone acetonide (0.25 mg/mL), administered at a dosage of three drops twice daily for 12 days, accompanied by routine ear cleaning using an otic cleansing solution. Clinical evaluation after 12 days of treatment showed significant improvement, characterized by reduced cerumen production, resolution of malodor, and the absence of inflammatory signs on otoscopic examination. This report underscores the importance of cytological examination and bacterial culture in establishing an accurate diagnosis and demonstrates the effectiveness of combination topical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy in the management of bacterial external otitis.

Abstract

Domestic dogs are frequently encountered in poor physical condition, one of which is emaciation that is often accompanied by fungal and parasitic infections, thus requiring comprehensive clinical management. This case report aims to describe emaciation accompanied by Malasseziosis and Ehrlichiosis in a 4-month-old domestic dog. Physical examination revealed a body condition score of 3/9, dermatological lesions including alopecia, papules, crusts, and scales, accompanied by a strong odor and greasy hair, as well as the presence of the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Laboratory examinations included acetate tape preparation, which identified Malassezia spp., hematological analysis showing anemia and thrombocytopenia, and blood smear examination revealing Ehrlichia morulae within monocytes, which was further confirmed by a positive Ehrlichia canis antibody rapid test kit. Therapeutic management consisted of nutritional improvement through dietary modification, medicated bathing using a combination of Sodium Salicylate, Sulphur, Econazole Nitrate, and Chloroxylenol (Virbac Poison Sebazole®), administration of the antiparasitic Fluralaner (Bravecto® oral chewable tablet), Doxycycline antibiotic therapy, and supportive treatment with Livron B-plex. Evaluation on day 28 demonstrated significant weight gain, marked improvement in skin condition with resolution of alopecia, papules, crusts, and scales, reduction of malodor, normalization of hair texture, and improvement in blood smear and routine hematological findings. Based on clinical findings, laboratory results, and therapeutic response, the patient was diagnosed with emaciation accompanied by Malasseziosis and Ehrlichiosis and showed a favorable response to treatment, resulting in significant clinical improvement and stable condition after 28 days of monitoring. Dog owners are advised to ensure adequate nutrition, proper kennel sanitation, and environmental hygiene to prevent disease recurrence.

Abstract

Urolithiasis is one of the most common urinary tract disorders in dogs and can be influenced by nutritional factors, breed, sex, water intake, and infections caused by urease-producing bacteria. This article reports a 4-year-old female American Bully dog presenting with intermittent hematuria for eight months. Urinalysis revealed an alkaline urine pH of 8, urine specific gravity ≤ 1.010, and a very high number of struvite crystals. Ultrasonographic examination showed hyperechoic sand-like material within the urinary bladder, while no uroliths were detected on radiographic examination. Hematological and serum biochemical analyses revealed mild changes that remained within physiological limits. The therapeutic approach included administration of cefadroxil, methylprednisolone, Cystaid®, Nutri-Plus Gel®, and dietary modification to a therapeutic Urinary S/O for 14 days. Clinical and ultrasonographic evaluations after therapy demonstrated a reduction in the number of bladder crystals, along with improvement in urine color and odor. This case highlights that a combination of pharmacological therapy and dietary management plays an important role in the treatment of struvite urolithiasis in dogs, particularly cases associated with uncontrolled dietary patterns.
