Abstract

This research seeks to understand how a curriculum reform that emphasizes studentcentered learning influences classroom instruction. The new curriculum is designed by the government of Indonesia to grant autonomy to teachers in re-emphasizing learning according to the student’s needs and local context. Previous studies suggest that teacher autonomy in elaborating curricula and pedagogy is associated with student’s engagement and improvement in learning outcomes. Given the low autonomy of teachers in Indonesia, their responses can inform how we should formulate effective reforms. This research used a case study to investigate how curriculum reform is perceived by middle school teachers and how they translate it into classroom instruction. The data was collected through classroom observations and complemented by semi-structured phone interviews with 20 Math teachers in Jakarta and Central Java from November 2022 to February 2023. To avoid incongruous instruction, this research informs that countries with a long history of low teacher autonomy like Indonesia should not promote a grand education reform design without clear guidelines and adequate support. The reformers need to touch upon teacher’s beliefs about curriculum completion and didactic pedagogy before expecting them to change their teaching practices into active learning and exercise their authority in independently developing curricula.

Abstract

In essence, a learning process involves students interacting with teachers, other students, and the learning environment in an educational setting. This study aimed to explore student learning experiences and the long-term impact of learning mathematics outside the classroom. This research is a longitudinal study, in which the research subjects change after a certain period of time. This study involved subjects as 208 male and female students. The author collected data through tests, questionnaires, and interview methods. The author then analyzed the data by comparing the same data over two periods. The results suggested that learning by utilizing learning resources outside the classroom in learning mathematics may help increase student engagement in the cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. Changes shifted from learning inside classroom to learning outside classroom have created a different learning atmosphere and provided a lot of learning experiences for students, and also increased student engagement in the cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions. It indicated that learning mathematics outside the classroom has a long-term impact on student interaction in three dimensions, namely (1) the cognitive dimension; students can develop such as critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and reasoning abilities; (2) affective dimensions; students’ positive disposition towards mathematics increases while students' mathematics anxiety levels decrease; and (3) the conative dimension; such as improvement in social skills, cooperation, better communication, confidence, and diligence in learning mathematics.

Abstract

This research aims to describe differentiated instruction through project-based learning on students' collaborative skills in solid geometry.  This study is a case study type of research. Data collection techniques were carried out by observing and interviewing 32 students. The result of this research is that differentiated instruction begins with an assessment of student readiness and an assessment of student interest. The learning process continues with implementing three essential aspects of differentiated instruction: content, process, and product differentiation. Process differentiation begins with the implementation of project-based learning steps. In this case, differentiated teaching and project-based learning complement each other. The results of the collaborative skills show that the students in the forming category performed optimally. Pupils learn in groups voluntarily; pupils do not leave their groups, and they exchange ideas when completing their projects. However, in the other categories, i.e., students' functioning, formulating, and fermenting, they do not show maximum results.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze similarity task in Indonesian junior high school mathematics textbooks from four different curricula: KTSP, the 2013 Curriculum, the Revised 2013 Curriculum, and the Merdeka Curriculum, using the praxeological organization approach within the framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). The research employed a qualitative approach using a document analysis method. The subjects of the study were similarity related problems found in junior high school mathematics textbooks published by the Indonesian government, across four different curricula. Coding techniques were used as the research instrument to gather empirical data about textbook praxeology organization structures, while the analysis instrument interpreted the didactic organization between praxis elements: types of task (T) and technique  (τ). The study identified nine types of task  (T1-T9) and nine corresponding techniques  (τ1 - τ9), which vary across curricula. A significant reduction in the number of type odf tasks was found in the Merdeka Curriculum textbook, indicating a shift in curricular focus concerning numeracy. These findings reveal that the variation in problem types and presentation approaches in textbooks is closely related to curriculum changes. This aligns with the role of textbooks as blueprints of the curriculum. Therefore, this research contributes to the development of mathematics pedagogy and provides valuable insights for teachers, textbook authors, and policymakers in designing more effective learning experiences.
