Abstract

This study examines the representation of environmental economic practices in local historical texts and archives in Indonesia by situating the relationship between economic activity and the environment within a critical historical perspective. Environmental economics has often been approached through technocratic and contemporary policy frameworks, leaving the historical dimensions that shape patterns of resource exploitation and management relatively underexplored. Using a qualitative descriptive approach based on textual and archival analysis, this research investigates a range of local historical sources, administrative archives, and policy documents from the pre–New Order period, the New Order era, the Reformasi period, and the contemporary context. The findings reveal a significant shift in the representation of environmental economic practices, from adaptive systems grounded in local ecological knowledge toward an extractive development paradigm legitimized by the state, followed by the reproduction of similar logics under decentralization and the discourse of the green economy. Historical texts not only document environmental economic practices but also function as discursive instruments that shape societal and governmental perceptions of nature. This study argues that environmental economic issues cannot be separated from their historical construction and the power relations that sustain them. Therefore, a historical approach is essential to fostering critical reflection in the formulation of environmental economic policies that are more equitable, context-sensitive, and sustainable.

Abstract

This research examines how Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in Taiwan build disaster resilience by mobilizing social capital, particularly in contexts where formal institutional support is limited or absent. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, the study adopts a case study design that includes semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The findings reveal that bonding and bridging social capital, developed through informal community connections, digital platforms, and shared religious and cultural practices, serve as critical assets for disaster preparedness and response. These networks enable mutual aid, timely information exchange, and collective action among IMWs during disaster situations. However, linking social capital appears weak, indicating limited engagement with formal institutions and restricted access to public resources and legal protections. Informal leadership structures and culturally rooted coping strategies continue to play a significant role in fostering grassroots resilience. Nonetheless, systemic challenges such as language barriers, precarious legal status, and digital exclusion continue to impede broader institutional integration. By highlighting the experiences and agency of IMWs, this research contributes meaningfully to the discourse on disaster governance. It underscores the importance of inclusive frameworks that acknowledge the capabilities of migrant communities as active disaster actors rather than passive recipients of aid. It advocates for the inclusion of community-based organizations in national disaster policies and recommends comparative studies across different migrant-receiving contexts to deepen understanding of transnational resilience dynamics.

Abstract

ABSTRACTDayak ikat weaving is a cultural heritage of the indigenous communities in West Kalimantan, holding significant cultural, social, and economic value for the Dayak people. However, the sustainability of this weaving tradition faces several challenges, including modernization, limited cultural documentation, declining interest among younger generations, and suboptimal digital marketing practices. This community service initiative aimed to document the potential of Dayak ikat weaving in Ensaid Panjang Village, Sintang Regency, while describing weaving practices and exploring opportunities for the development of a local culture-based creative economy. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicated that the weaving tradition remains an integral part of Dayak community life and continues to be passed down across generations. The production process still relies on traditional looms, with some artisans utilizing natural dyes derived from forest plants. Beyond its cultural and symbolic significance, Dayak ikat weaving also contributes to local economic development through the diversification of handicraft products and cultural tourism. Therefore, collaborative efforts involving cultural documentation, strengthened digital promotion, and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection are necessary to support the sustainable preservation of Dayak ikat weaving. Abstract

The Jonggan performing art, as a cultural heritage of the Dayak Kanayatn community, faces preservation challenges amid shifting gender values and contemporary cultural dynamics, particularly regarding the position and role of women in performance practices. This study aims to analyze the role of women in Jonggan performance as a process of gender value transformation and its implications for the preservation of traditional Dayak Kanayatn performing arts. The analysis is grounded in gender theory and cultural performativity, which conceptualize the body, social roles, and artistic practices as spaces for symbolic meaning articulation and value negotiation. This research employs a qualitative approach using a new ethnographic framework through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation analysis of Jonggan performances conducted in customary rituals and cultural festivals. The informants consisted of ten individuals selected through purposive sampling, with the criteria including community members who had experience in the implementation of local wisdom, as well as community leaders who actively promote and regularly carry out traditional practices and local wisdom. The findings reveal that women’s involvement in Jonggan is not merely visual or aesthetic but represents symbols of fertility, hospitality, and social cohesion rooted in Dayak Kanayatn cosmology, while simultaneously functioning as mediators of gender value transformation in sustaining traditional arts. The novelty of this research lies in its interpretation of women’s roles not only as performers but also as agents of cultural transformation and empowerment within a tradition-based creative economy.
